Like many men his age, Ed Tuttle is having a mid-life crisis. He is bored with his job, uncertain about his faith, and unable to find love in the wake of divorce. Unlike most other men his age, however, Ed Tuttle is a justice on the United States Supreme Court. As the swing vote in one of the most contentious terms in recent memory, Justice Tuttle holds the future of the nation in his hands, a tall order for someone who can barely make it through a weekend without making a monumental life mistake. In this hilarious and poignant debut novel, Jay Wexler—law professor, humor writer, and former law clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg—reminds us that power is wielded by real, often emotionally fragile people and that nobody, regardless of how successful, powerful, rich, intelligent, lucky, or influential they may be, is immune from the feelings of restlessness, doubt, and anxiety that are inherent in living in the modern world.

Tuttle in the Balance, by Jay Wexler

Review "Penned by a Boston University law professor and former Supreme Court clerk, Tuttle in the Balance offers a goofy and fundamentally human take on one of the nation's top government figures that's likely to appeal to those who prefer political humor to political drama. . . . Along with the laughs, it also delivers some solid musings on success, friendship, and aging." --The A.V. Club"What would happen if a swing-vote justice suddenly suffered a mid-life crisis? That's the premise of Tuttle in the Balance, a funny novel by [Jay] Wexler, a former clerk to Ginsburg. After a divorce and a rejuvenated sex life, Justice Ed Tuttle finds himself bored on the bench, seeking thrills in all the wrong places. It's improbable, for sure, but the court details are accurate and readers will find themselves eager to learn how it all turns out." --Tony Mauro, National Law Journal"Just like corporations and Soylent Green, Supreme Court justices are people too. Unbeknownst to us, the justices may get drunk, engage in regrettable sexual encounters, and doodle pictures during oral argument. This is one of the main themes of Boston University law professor Jay Wexler's new satirical legal novel Tuttle in the Balance, which depicts a bored Supreme Court justice undergoing a midlife crisis. The novel, which is a cross between American Beauty and the works of Christopher Buckley, is a humorous and enjoyable read for any lawyer or law student." --Above the Law“Savvy watchers of our highest court will have a blast reading this zany take on the antics of a bored 60-something who happens to be a horny Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court going through a mid-life crisis. Seeking refuge from the tired debates over competing ways of interpreting our 1787 Constitution, this sex-starved Justice finds himself immersed in what turn out to be the remarkably similar disputes over how to interpret Chuang Tzu’s Taoist writings of a couple thousand years ago. For a painless lesson in constitutional theory for the layman, underscoring the ‘lay,’ you’ve got to read this book.”--Laurence H. Tribe, Carl M. Loeb University Professor and Professor of Constitutional Law, Harvard Law School“This is the best -- and, I must admit, only -- novel I've ever read that deftly utilizes the possible reversal of a decision by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals regarding the Establishment Clause as a plot device within a light romantic comedy.” -- Chuck Klosterman, author of I Wear the Black Hat and Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs“Disrobing a judge might not be pretty, but Wexler makes it too funny to look away. Tuttle is full of the cringe-worthy confessions, terrible decisions, and existential crises that make the best kind of humor. Watching a powerful white man chip away at his own privilege has never been this fun. “ --Beth Lisick, author of Everybody Into the Pool and Yokohama Threeway and Other Small Shames“Both laugh out-loud funny and emotionally stirring, the rueful and lusty Tuttle in the Balance feels like what you might get if Richard Russo wrote a Supreme Court novel, or Nick Hornby visited the Beltway. I loved it.” -- Henry Alford, Winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor and author of How to Live: A Search for Wisdom from Old People (While They Are Still on This Earth)

About the Author Jay Wexler is a law professor at Boston University and the author of two non-fiction books that combine legal analysis and humor—Holy Hullabaloos: A Road Trip to the Battlegrounds of the Church/State Wars, which Publisher's Weekly said in its starred review was "laugh out loud funny," and The Odd Clauses: Understanding the Constitution Through Ten of its Most Curious Provisions.

Posner Tuttle in the Balance is a comic mssterpiece, fast-paced, hilarious, worthy of Evelyn Waugh, P.G.Wodehouse, or Kingsley Amis. A pungent satire of the Supreme Court, it manages to persuade the reader that the job of a Supreme Court Justice can be really boring, that the Court's decisions often have little to do with "law" in the conventional sense--that as Justice Tuttle, the protagonist, says at one point: "I never liked constitutional law. It's barely law at all, in my view. It's just politics, filtered through a few vague phrases in an old document written by people who couldn't posibly fathom what the world is like today"--all of which is true. The book has eveything--fisticuffs in the Court's conference room (recalling the fisticuffs in the War Room in Dr. Strangelove), a mislife crisis, sex, booze, gambling in Atlantic City casinos, a car crash, bemused law clerks, a Justice Scalia look-alike, an unlikable female Chief Justice, and--not least--three cats, all in major roles. A movie can be expected.

Rodgers It's kind of hard to laugh at lawyers, and our Supreme Court justices are the least funny lawyers of all, so it's refreshing to read about how ridiculous they can be -- just like real people! I enjoyed the book. Despite all of Tuttle's silly antics, Wexler manages to make readers care about him, without getting too heavy handed about the job or its responsibilities. I happily read until the end to find out what Tuttle would do, and even though it was kind of wacky, it was entertaining for sure. Looking forward to Wexler's next fictional endeavor.

I was thoroughly entertained by Tuttle's silly escapades but also found myself wondering, how is the Court going to rule?! Overall a very easy, intelligent and enjoyable read.

"Dirty Boys' is a Top-Notch Thriller By Mark Shaw, Burlingame California Based on "Dirty Boys," John Ligato has a bright future as a top-notch novelist. The character John Booker is a fascinating study. Love him or hate him, he says what he means and Ligato, a former FBI undercover agent, brings Booker to life with zest and snappy dialogue providing drama at every turn. The story line is disturbing of course, right from the front page of today's newspapers as the world attempts to deal with terrorists intent on triggering chaos among the masses. Regardless, it's the dialogue that makes this story special. For instance, "Agent 36" tells Booker, "Cut the Sands of Iwo Jima speech, Booker, if they can play dirty then we can be Dirty Boys, too." And, fortunately, they are.

As I sit here reading Dirty Boys, the live TV news is reporting about the very things on the pages in front of me:Terrorism. The story moves quickly from one setting to the next as we follow Booker on his quest to find the enemy. I can't wait for the movie! Better yet, this would make a fascinating TV series. The characters are believable and likable. I read a lot & this is the first time I've shared a review. I feel that strongly about the book. Looking for more from this author."It's not what you look at that matters;it's what you see." Henry David Thoreau

Being a career Marine, I can relate to the logic, planning and all out luck portrayed with the characters in this book. Very relevant to what is happening today around the world. Hard hitting and realistic down to the tactics used in fighting "bad guys". If you like being on the edge of your seat..... get this book... you wont be let down. My last comment is.... Mr Ligato... when is your next book coming out.

Mystic is the start of an enchanting new epic fantasy series from Jason Denzel, the founder of Dragonmount.

I called to the Myst, and it sent us you.

For hundreds of years, high-born nobles have competed for the chance to learn of the Myst. Powerful, revered, and often reclusive, Mystics have the unique ability to summon and manipulate the Myst: the underlying energy that lives at the heart of the universe. Once in a very great while, they take an apprentice, always from the most privileged sects of society. Such has always been the tradition-until a new High Mystic takes her seat and chooses Pomella AnDone, a restless, low-born teenager, as a candidate.

Commoners have never been welcomed among the select few given the opportunity to rise beyond even the highest nobility. So when Pomella chooses to accept the summons and journey to Kelt Apar, she knows that she will have more to contend with than the competition for the apprenticeship.

Breaking both law and tradition, Pomella undergoes three trials against the other candidates to prove her worthiness. As the trials unfold, Pomella navigates a deadly world of intolerance and betrayal, unaware that ruthless conspirators intend to make her suffer for having the audacity to seek to unravel the secrets of the Myst.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Denzel's debut delivers! By Brian S. Mystic is the debut novel by Jason Denzel. It straddles the line between young adult and adult fantasy, tackling the familiar story of a teenager who discovers they have magical powers and sets off on an adventure to master them. The two main characters, Pomella and Sim, are endearing and lovable, and Denzel masterfully takes them on a journey across the (admittedly small) island of Moth, where they meet wonderful magical creatures and fantastically memorable characters.I'm giving it five stars not because it's the best book I've ever read, but because it so perfectly encapsulates the kinds of books I read back when I first stepped out of the young adult genre into the wider world of fantasy. While not epic on the scale of Game of Thrones or the Wheel of Time or even Harry Potter, "Mystic" touches on the closer-to-home morals and lessons we look for in the best of humanity: compassion, love, and maybe a little rebelliousness. This novel is nostalgic and sweet, exciting and fun, and I'd recommend it to any teenager looking for a first look into fantasy adventure.

By mblackford If I had only 4 words to describe this book I'd say: " I loved this story!!"This book was recommended to me by Amazon because I had bought other fantasy series books (Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Outlander, Game of Thrones, etc.). I didn't know what to expect from this author (Jason Denzel) as I'd not heard of him before (apparently he is the founder of a website called Dagonmount.com which is a commuity for The Wheel of Time books).I have twin 14 year olds (a boy and a girl) and we try to read together as much as we can, taking turns reading out loud books that are science-fiction/fantasy/time-travel, etc. This book hit it out of the park for our family.I highly recommend this book as a holiday gift for anyone whose young adult likes this genre (this book wouldn't be rated 'R' ;) While I felt it is suitable for young adults -- I do have to admit that I'm 41 and loved it too... I kept thinking to myself 'I hope they make this into a TV series.'At it's heart, this is a great story that unfolds brilliantly. The story revolves around a young heroine named Pomella who as been summoned from her tiny village to participate in a competition against three others to become an apprentice to the new High Mystic. This competition has very high stakes because if she fails, she'll become homeless and nameless-- basically an outcast on the island.I fell in love with Pomella because she is an 'everyday person' who happens to be a heroine. She is someone I related to because she was so genuine - she is able to express her doubts and insecurities just like all of us can. She was very authentic and a good role model for both my son and daughter (14 year old twins who also loved the book).Throughout the competition, Pomella meets people both human and non-human who come with many surprises and unpredictable twists and turns. The only bad part about the story is it ended, but I read that the author is making this a 3-book saga and I can't wait until the next story. A great read!!

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Review of Mystic By H. P. Mystic is the first book by Jason Denzel, better known in fandom circles as the founder of The Wheel of Time fan site Dragonmount. Mystic is the story Pomella, a teenage girl who fights with her father and dreams of something more, who is chosen—against all tradition, as a commoner—to endure trials in the hope of becoming apprentice to the High Mystic. In doing so she will learn to manipulate the Myst. And, less obviously, it is the story of Sim, the village friend who gets caught up in the events of the book. It is, alas, a rather pedestrian debut. As you might expect of a book that revolves around trials to enter a magic apprenticeship, Mystic straddles the border of adult and YA fantasy. It gently tries to push back against YA fantasy tropes in particular. Not with any real success, but it is certainly in conversation with them. Pomella’s character is a bit too “Pants” for me to ever connect. Sim, on the other hand, surprised me by being the most interesting character in the book. As did one other character who shall remain nameless. The plot is pretty strong, if predictable, but a book like this will live or die by the worldbuilding. Mystic draws from a Celtic tradition, as I gather from advance commentary, the heavy use of green, the tree imagery, the druidic depiction of Pomella on the cover and the High Mystic, the island setting, and the use of the fae. If groan-worthy terms like “jagged,” “dunder,” “mhathir,” and “fathir” have Celtic roots, they were best left there. Mystic takes place on the Island of Moth, somewhere in size between Ireland and the Isle of Man. The magic system, which involves somehow “unveiling” the Myst and reaching across into fairyland, isn’t developed enough to be interesting. The one thing that is interesting—and awesome—is the Green Man, the servant and guardian of the High Mystic, who travels through the ground and simply constitutes itself wherever it appears from the ground at hand, whether soil, rock, or foliage.Ultimately I don’t think it was enough to get me to pick up book 2, although there is plenty of potential there.

About the Author Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. Best known for his classics Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Jabberwocky, Carroll was also an accomplished inventor who created an early version of what is today known as Scrabble. It starts with someone else's history of the lecture and how the paper came to be published. Apparently he was not one for crowds and only did the talk in the first place as a favor to a friend. The lecture is about the "diet" of our minds. It is NOT fictional, do not go into it thinking it is another alice. I find his thoughts ahead of their rime and to include better study habits and how to build one's ability to pull information read. I intend on having my children read it as one of their "classics" and comparing it to study techniques people espouse now. It was fairly short and to the point.

Interesting, concise food for thought, no pun intended By Monica Rae I d'loaded this title because I'm interested in reading some of tbe lesser known works of the master storytellers. This is a very quick read and succinctly and concisely describes by way of metaphor how to feed your mind. I enjoyed Carroll's dry wit very much and am still masticating the message. Hope you enjoy!

Easily digested tasty treat By autodidact _Feeding the Mind_ is a short text based on a lecture the shy, nervous Lewis Carroll gave in 1884.It draws an analogy between feeding the body and feeding the mind. "What care we take about feeding the lucky body! Which of us does as much for his mind?" asks Carroll. "[W]e can continue to exist as animals (scarcely as men) though the mind be utterly starved and neglected."Taking lessons from the way the body best processes food, he offers these suggestions for a nutritious mental diet:* Eat the PROPER KIND of food. I would've liked to see some of his own personal favorites listed here, but I guess that would've affected the generality of the advice.* Eat the PROPER AMOUNT of food. He warns against gluttony, or over-reading, which can lead to weakness of digestive power and even loss of appetite. He mentions the idea of a fat mind, one that has become dull and sluggish as a result of too much reading.* Don't eat TOO MANY KINDS of food AT ONCE. He likens this to having a tiny bit of everything in the one meal rather than more of one thing, the result being there's not enough of anything to satisfy your taste buds.* Allow PROPER INTERVALS between meals to aid digestion. He suggests that even a five-minute break every hour reinvigorates the mind.* CHEW your food to aid digestion. That is, think very carefully about everything you read. He suggests a solitary walk for an hour, thinking over a subject. Thinking over a subject lets your mind organize the information properly, creating associations and facilitating recall.Carroll's trademark wit isn't missing from _Feeding the Mind_, either. He'll have most readers laughing at least once.A totally delicious treat. I wish only that he'd said more.
