Rebecca Skloot and her best seller, The Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks, has created a lot of interest in the immortal HeLa cells that were taken from a 31-year-old black woman called Henrietta Lacks without her family's consent at the Johns Hopkins Hospital at Baltimore in 1951. She describes the story of how Henrietta Lacks died and how her cells were sent around the world for medical research. She goes through the life stories of Henrietta and the Lacks family and the pain they endured when they found out about Henrietta's cells. Skloot's narration of the entire account is powerful, emotional, painful and even heart breaking. Her book has become a notable science reading for high school children and science undergraduates in the United States. And rightly so, Henrietta's story is a case of medical racism, violation of ethical obligation, segregation, ignorance, poverty and painful American history.

Today, HeLa cells are the most widely used cell line in the world and has been instrumental in many of the world's medical discoveries. It was the first cells to be sent to space, has helped eradicate polio and has been used in 70,000 medical studies including the development of drugs for herpes, Parkinson's disease, leukemia, and influenza.

The title The Immortal life of Henriette Lacks actually refers to the immortalization of cancer cells and we look at how HeLa cells are cultured and are able to divide indefinitely. This audiobook looks at the life of Henrietta Lacks and describes HeLa cells in more detail.

Topics covered in this book:

  • What are HeLa cells?
  • Where did HeLa cells come from?
  • Who was Henrietta Lacks?
  • Epithelial adenocarcinoma and HeLa
  • Life of Henrietta
  • The family of Henrietta Lacks
  • Dr. George Otto Gey

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Study In Replication? By Broadway Turk Superstar HeLa Cells by Nishi Singh is an absorbing glimpse into a strange episode in medical history centered on the life and death of Henrietta Lacks. A poor black woman in Baltimore, she was diagnosed with cervix cancer and forced to undergo treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital. It was one of the only places in America that would treat indigent Negroes, and for good reason. In a script taken straight from Mary Shelley, the administration used their benevolence as a veneer to conduct medical experiments with modest restriction. It turns out that they harvested Lacks’ cells without due permission, and immortalized her in the process. To this day, researchers are still using HeLa (first syllables of her name) cells in studies that have surpassed the seventy thousand mark. Bane or boon? You be the judge.Singh’s work is actually a study guide of sorts that encapsulates a previous work by Rebecca Skloot, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Skloot’s work focused on the melodrama of the Lacks family’s trauma in finding that Henrietta’s cells had been harvested and were being distributed for use around the globe. It wasn’t so much about the breakthroughs they achieved (in the battles against a multitude of diseases including leukemia and Parkinson’s), but about how they weren’t given a say in the matter. After all, they should have made a couple of bucks out of the deal. Hopefully Rebecca Skloot is doing as well.Pick up a copy of HeLa Cells by Nishi Singh. It’s not only a great primer and intro to Skloot’s book, but gives us lots of thought about how one hand washes the other.

I have heard about HeLa cells before but never knew where they came from. It was interesting to find out about their origins and learn about the donor. The breakthroughs in biology and medical science have been phenomenal over the past century but what they did was unethical and goes against the backbone of experimental testing and subjects. Although having the HeLa cells have contributed to many medical advancements. The content wasn’t all that caught my attention with this book. The author was able to bring difficult concepts to a level anyone could understand with word usage and pictures. HeLa Cells was really an awesome, informative read.

Although some of the information is repeated the reader is still going to find the facts in this book amazing. The writing allows anyone to understand what some Doctors don't like to share. Henrietta Lacks had more than one strike against her. She was poor, black and a woman with no Insurance! Of course she was taken advantage of and died at the young age of 31. Her cells are still in use today to do research to make cures for a variety of disease. I enjoyed this book and was surprised I never heard of Henrietta before. Maybe because her cells were stolen and her family still fights the big medical industry over it.

In Regency London, a woman escapes from a burning warehouse only to realize she doesn't know her own identity. Although the locket around her neck bears the name Miranda, she has no recollection of her past. Nor does she know why two very different men want her—the devilishly handsome Scotsman Ian MacVane, and Lord Lucas Chesney, the nobleman who claims to be her betrothed.

In a race against time to discover who she is and which man she can trust, Miranda embarks on a soul-stirring journey that takes her from the dazzling salons of London to the craggy Highlands of Scotland. All of her beliefs—about herself, her world and the nature of love—are tested to their limits as she seeks the truth about her past and finds an unexpected passion that ignites the hidden fires within….

Another excellent read of Susan's By Carol I especially enjoy Susan Wiggs and wish she would get on the writing track again, as I'm missing her new books. However, recently I have had to find her more obsure books.Occasionally, there is a diamond in the rough.. Ok this is so this is not too rough .. it is a polished mystery romance and an excellent read with interesting characters and intrigue. Sorry I could not agree with the person that said it had too much mystery?? Hummm... I guess that what makes us all different. I think you would like it if you have enjoyed other somewhat complex novels of Susan's. I was surprised to find it and delighted to enjoy it so much! Good luck finding a copy.

It talks to evry discipline problem that may be encountered, from the ordinary to the severe. It is more applicable to the elementary level than to the secondary level. As a school counselor, I gave it to my daughter as she began her teaching career.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Progressive and useful By M. Dartez I usually do not write reviews, but I had to say that I disagree with the previous reviewer's belief that this book was more applicable to elementary-school teachers. I am a middle school and high school teacher and believe that the techniques used in this book are just as helpful for upper-level teachers. There are even two chapters on particular concerns with adolescents. Those teachers who use the Responsive Classroom system of discipline will find that this book provides additional techniques to counsel children and aid them to become responsible citizens.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Key to Children's Behavior By Tammy G. Simpo Dr. Dreikurs provides insightful and necessary information for teachers and parents today. It was enlightening to learn the 4 Adlerian Goals of Misbehavior (Need for: Attention, Power, Revenge, Discouragement) that children exhibit and how to deal with those behaviors to help children in a respectful and successful manner. There are many ideas such as the approach to discuss behaviors as a group in the classroom that lead children to understand their own behaviors as well as their friends' and how to help each other. Of great interest is also the approach of family meetings, and the examples, role play and dialogues are fantastic scenarios that help us learn HOW to follow the advice provided in the book. I was saddened to learn how I may have caused the competitive behavior of my own child, though happy to learn how to reverse what has been done. Understanding why our generation is transitioning in the way we parent as opposed to our parents and grandparents is provided...we are moving from autocratic to democratic methods. And after reading the chapter regarding this transition, it is logical why we have a struggle. Many of us are looking for help to move towards a more child-friendly approach, which is EXACTLY what "Maintaing Sanity in the Classroom" provides. All children would be much better off if all teachers had extensive training in the areas addressed by this excellent book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Odelia Delights Again By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers Some ideas are so obvious jumping off points, it’s a wonder we don’t see them more often in mysteries. A Body to Spare, the latest Odelia Grey mystery by Sue Ann Jaffarian has one such great idea. The set up for the mystery is wonderful, and the execution is even better.Odelia’s day was filled with miscellaneous errands including a quick stop at the car wash. When the attendants pop her trunk, however, that all changes. Back there, they find the naked corpse of a man. Taped to him is a note with two words on it – “Found Me!” Who was the body in her trunk? And why would someone leave it for Odelia to find? While the set up may be that simple, the places this mystery bends and twists are much more complicated. I’m avoiding saying more so I don’t spoil the surprises. I did guess one plot point early, but that hardly mattered since there were so many more I didn’t anticipate. And yet, the plot unfolded in a logical manner leading to an exciting climax. The characters in this series are absolutely wonderful. It may be the Odelia Grey series, but it is so much richer than that. There’s her husband, Greg; her half-brother, Clark; her mother; a couple of police detectives; her best friend, Zee; and the list goes on and on. All of these characters are real and as much a part the patchwork quilt of the series as Odelia is. I absolutely love them, and the love and support they show each other is a huge part of that and the appeal of the series. Of course, the characters we meet along the way in this book are just as vivid and real to us.Fans of Sue Ann’s Ghost of Granny Apples series will be delighted to learn that Emma Whitecastle, the main character in that series, has a cameo here. Yes, it does introduce a very slight paranormal element to this book, but it plays a minor part in how the mystery unfolds. And for fans of both series (like me), watching them interact was a blast and actually helped develop them both a bit. (And if you aren't a fan of paranormal mysteries, I sympathize. Granny is an exception for me, and I'm so glad I made the decision to read it even though it includes ghosts. I highly recommend you give it a try as well.)As I was reading this book I realized something – this series is a comfort read for me. This is the second time over the years that I’ve been reading about Odelia when I’ve had a bad day. (Nothing drastic, just bad), and I’ve found my mood significantly improved thanks to escaping into Odelia’s world. It’s just that much fun to visit. The fact that Odelia has my level of sarcasm certainly doesn’t hurt. Plus, Odelia’s mom steals just about every scene she is in. It’s not possible to sit and read this without cracking a smile if not laughing out loud.I was so hooked on this book, I read almost all of it in a 24 hour period. Now comes the long wait until I can visit with Odelia again. Odelia’s fans will be thrilled with A Body to Spare. And if you haven’t met her yet, I cannot recommend highly enough that you drop everything and fix that today.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another amazing read with Odelia and Greg By Ann F The only thing I don't like about this book, is that I am done reading it and have a wait for the next in the series. Seriously, this is probably one of my favorites in the series. Great moments of suspense balanced well with Sue Ann Jaffarian's wonderful sense of humour. Loved it!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Odelia Grey is a wonderful character and this is a great series. By Grateful Grandma This is #10 in the Odelia Grey series and I definitely need to go back and read the rest.Odelia and her mother, Grace, are out running errands. After stopping at the car wash, they are getting ready to leave when they hear a scream. In the trunk of her car, the attendants find a dead, naked body, curled up, tied and with a note attached. Immediately Odelia is handcuffed and taken to the police station, at the top of the suspect list. She and her husband, Greg, decide to learn all they can about the victim, and who might have had a grudge against Odelia to frame her like that, while convincing Odelia's mother not to write about it on her blog called "A Old Broad's Perspective". The feds quickly become embroiled in the case and they do not want Odelia and Greg messing around in their crime investigation. Some speculate that the high-profile victim may have been used to draw some of Odelia's connections out into the open when they come to her rescue, although Odelia is certain that her "friends" (that term is used loosely considering they are contract killers and embezzlers) didn't do it.I like that the characters are so everyday normal. Odelia is a plus-sized paralegal who is mouthy, sarcastic, bold, and loves her husband, mother and brother very much. Her husband Greg may be wheelchair-bound, but he's strong, confident and not afraid to stand up to anyone despite his handicap, especially where Odelia or Grace are concerned. They are supportive of each other and work together as a team, whether they are investigating a murder or trying to keep Odelia's mother in check and out of trouble. Odelia's mother is a bit irresponsible, and not without her issues. There were a few twists and turns in the story, but the ending was quite surprising and sad at the same time. I understand why Odelia is referred to as "The Corpse Magnet". I recommend this book to any lovers of cozy mysteries as well as humourous mysteries.I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
