Mary Jane Seacole (23 November 1805 – 14 May 1881), née Grant, was a Jamaican-born woman of Scottish and Creole descent who set up a "British Hotel" behind the lines during the Crimean War, which she described as "a mess-table and comfortable quarters for sick and convalescent officers," and provided succor for wounded servicemen on the battlefield. She was posthumously awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit in 1991. In 2004 she was voted the greatest black Briton. She acquired knowledge of herbal medicine in the Caribbean. When the Crimean War broke out, she applied to the War Office to assist but was refused. She traveled independently and set up her hotel and assisted battlefield wounded. She became extremely popular among service personnel who raised money for her when she faced destitution after the war. After her death, she was forgotten for almost a century, but today is celebrated as a woman who successfully combated racial prejudice. Her biography , Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands (1857), is one of the earliest autobiographies of a mixed-race woman, although some aspects of its accuracy have been questioned. It has been claimed that Seacole's achievements have been exaggerated for political reasons and a plan to erect a statue of her at St Thomas' Hospital, London, describing her as a "pioneer nurse", has generated controversy. Further controversy broke out in the United Kingdom late in 2012 over reports of a proposal to remove her from the country's National Curriculum

Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands, by Mary Seacole

Review "Seacole's urbanity and cosmopolitan wit, along with her indomitable spirit and frankness about her own troubles, make her narrative one of the most readable and rewarding black women's autobiographies of the nineteenth century."--William L. Andrews, in his Introduction

From the Back Cover No autobiography by an Afro-American woman of the nineteenth century defies classification more than Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands (1857). A free-born Jamaican, evidently well protected from the tentacles of slavery, Mary Jane Grant Seacole did not write her narrative expressly to advance the cause of antislavery, as so many Afro-American women autobiographers did during her era.

About the Author Mary Seacole was born Mary Jane Grant in Kingston, Jamaica, the daughter of a Scottish soldier in the British Army and a free Jamaican woman. Her mother was a "doctress", a healer who used traditional Caribbean and African herbal remedies. She ran Blundell Hall, a boarding house at 7 East Street, considered one of the best hotels in all Kingston. Here Seacole acquired her nursing skills. Seacole's autobiography states that her early experiments in medicine were based on what she learned from her mother while ministering to a doll, then progressing to pets, before helping her mother treat humans.

Mother Seacole's adventures makes you thirst for excitement By Kali Mary Seacole's reputation after the Crimean War certainly rivalled that of her counterpart Florence Nightingale but for a very long time she was a forgotten footnote in history, and this probably had a lot to do with the fact she was not a white middle class woman, but was instead the offspring of two races, that of a Scottish father and a black Jamaican mother. She was a born healer and a woman of tremendous energy, she overcame official indifference and racial prejudice as she strove to prove her worth as a Nurse on par with Nightingale herself.Seacole got herself out to the war by her own efforts and at her own expense, she risked her life to bring comfort to the wounded and dying soldiers; and became one of the first black woman to make a mark on British public life. But while Florence Nightingale has gone down in history, Mary Seacole was relegated to obscurity until very recently. This book tells her story in her own words, of her travels, her experiences, her life as a woman in colour living in a time of bigotry, prejudice and racial hatred. It's a fantastic book and brings to life in its many pages a woman of courage and moral conviction that what she was doing with her life was the right thing to do. To me Mary Seacole optimises the Crimean War in a way that Nightingale never can. A book worthy to be read in schools in the way that Anne Frank is read even now in the 21st century.

In this thrilling second book of the Earthborn trilogy, Lucas and Asha have survived the decimation of Earth at the hands of the invading Xalans and seek safe haven with their enemy’s true foes, the Sorans. They find a lush planet inhabited by a civilization far more advanced than their own, waging a seemingly endless war against a constantly evolving enemy. The Sorans call the pair of them the “Earthborn” and they’re welcomed as heroes, almost as gods. To an audience of billions, they swear an oath to avenge their fallen planet by aiding the Sorans in their war against Xala. But soon Lucas and Asha find Sora just as dangerous as apocalyptic Earth when they’re targeted by the Fourth Order, a rebel collective who decries them as false prophets and harbingers of further bloodshed.Their friend and turncoat Xalan scientist Alpha believes he’s located someone who can help them turn the tide of the war for good, stranded on a conquered colony planet. But landing on the new world, Lucas and Asha find themselves hunted by a violent, mysterious beast, known only as the Desecrator, let loose by the Xalans.Escaping Earth was only the beginning. As Lucas and Asha quickly learn, the universe has worlds and creatures far more dangerous than anything their home planet could have offered, and their continued survival hinges on gaining new allies they never could have imagined.Skyhorse Publishing, under our Night Shade and Talos imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of titles for readers interested in science fiction (space opera, time travel, hard SF, alien invasion, near-future dystopia), fantasy (grimdark, sword and sorcery, contemporary urban fantasy, steampunk, alternative history), and horror (zombies, vampires, and the occult and supernatural), and much more. Review Praise for The Exiled Earthborn:"Again, Tassi delivers a fast-paced action novel that hums along . . . a solid read that is perfect for a quiet weekend." —San Francisco Book Review"The space war between the human Sorans and their former slaves, the alien Xalan, continues in this fast-paced second Earthborn tale of raids and rescues. . . . A cliff-hanger ending almost demands that readers return for the concluding volume." —Publishers WeeklyPraise for The Last Exodus:"In The Last Exodus, Tassi succeeds in weaving together the space and post-apocalypse sub-genres into an enthralling adventure story of survival, trust, and hope. . . . Bottom line: a quick read, very enjoyable, highly recommended." —Geeks of Doom"What would happen if you threw Independence Day, The Walking Dead, and Guardians of the Galaxy into a blender? I can’t say for sure, but it’d probably look something like The Last Exodus. Tassi’s book is a clear, clever and action-packed romp that will undoubtedly appeal to sci-fi veterans and novices alike." —Blake Harris, author of Console Wars"Readers of Paul Tassi's The Last Exodus should get strapped in for a thrilling ride—this guy can really tell a tale!" —Michael Cobley, author of the Humanity's Fire trilogy"A well-grounded, grim tale of first contact . . . Debut novelist Tassi gifts his characters with solid motivations and understandable responses to the postapocalyptic setting." —Publishers Weekly

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great Science Fiction Book By DCH1400 This book kept me guessing most of the way through, mostly because I couldn't believe that the ending that seemed likely was actually going to happen. It has a powerful emotional core, with characters and issues that you care about and a fantastic, rich setting. I would recommend this book to anyone.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Now that's what you call a sequel By KingCousland I was skeptical about this the first time I read it. I didn't know if it was still going to be a 'human' journey with all the intergalactic events and action happening. However, I was wrong because there's a lot of heart in this story regardless if it's from the humans or the aliens. The writing and narrative improved from the first novel. I felt like I could connect to the characters more and their back stories were written very well. At the same time, I was more compelled by the story line in this novel. Maybe that's one reason why I gave this book a five and the last a four. The ending was done quite well. Sometimes writers tend to focus on one protagonist, but this story is more than Lucas' experience. Every character in the novel owns a part of it.I'm interested to read about what happens next.

It started out a bit rocky trying to figure out who everyone was again but settled down nicely once I had them sorted out. Great action and drama, good plot twists here and there with a bit of mystic prophesy, and a nice whammy at the end. The next book should be very interesting to see how the rabbit is extracted from the head gear.My only complaint is the author writes too slowly, waiting a year is unacceptable. Rent, food, and responsibilities are over rated. Write and write more...
