This is an inspiring, therapeutic book written from a unique perspective for paralytics & people with disabilities, doctors, nurses, physical therapists, caregivers, family and friends. The author, Dr. Wes Adams, Ph.D., is himself a quadriplegic from a car accident at the age of 16. He has written Wholeness is Possible from almost 58 years of experience in a wheelchair.  This book provides practical wisdom and hope for recovering a full, purposeful and meaningful life!

As a practical handbook, it contains much important information for both paralytics and health care professionals who work with spinal cord injured individuals. The book addresses the building blocks and the recovery stages necessary for a paralytic to make the journey toward wholeness.

In order to advance beyond physical rehabilitation recovery, other “recovery spheres” must also be given attention after trauma. This book focuses on all dimensions of personhood affected by paralysis. Physical-mental-emotional-spiritual dimensions of life, along with social issues, are all essential aspects of restoration and healing in a whole-person recovery. While this book's objective seeks to maximize physical recovery, it does so within a paradigm of wholeness.

Hall Although the original prognosis for Wes Adams after his accident was little short of hopeless, nevertheless this book gives understanding of how he surmounted the serious obstacles that confronted him. Wes has lived nearly 60 years since his initial injury, that fact alone could find him a place in the Guinness book of Records. Generally those who have this type of spinal cord injury, which Wes sustained at the age of 16yrs, do not live for as long as he has. There are many reasons for Wes’s longevity . Perhaps one of the greatest reasons is the faith and hope in God which is the bedrock of Wes’s life. This book is an encouragement and challenge not only to people who have suffered SCI but to all who have the desire to live a full and productive life. When we got to know Wes Adams in 1995 he had travelled to the UK with his wife Jane. The trip itself was a miracle considering Wes’s condition. He shipped over his specially equipped vehicle and spent several weeks travelling around the UK. When you read the original prognosis that he would, ‘not live a long life, nor would he be in good health as long as he lives’ this trip was a miracle in itself. It goes to show the indomitable spirit in which Wes leads his life. This book brings out again how disciplined and focussed he is in his life. This is an easy to read informative and inspiring book not only for people with Spinal injuries and their families but for anyone who is feeling life has dealt them a tough lot – wholeness is possible

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wholeness made practical By Jeanie Jacks I was sent a copy of this book and at first glance it looks like an educational textbook, complete with anatomical charts, diagrams, and photos, but I found this book to be so engaging and easy to understand. I am a nurse who has case managed several disabled individuals and found some really useful information. It will help the paralytic who is trying to cope with the trauma of hopelessness, as well as the caregiver or family member challenged with trying to understand the rigorous day in day out commitment of caring for someone who has lost mobility and independence. There are tips on nutrition, skin care, exercise and adaptive equipment. Any medical or behavioral health trained professional who may feel reticent about how to deliver optimism to someone learning to adapt should also read this book, and there are features of paralytics who have pursued successful careers. The message is clear: Wholeness IS Possible, with some transparent and practical guidance. This author does a wonderful job of sharing his own journey and experience from dire diagnosis, to physical, emotional, and spiritual health and hope.

Easy to read, informative and very refreshing. As someone who is not personally affected by paralysis, I found this book extremely helpful for anyone who suffers from trauma, or who struggles with impossible or life-restricting circumstances. You can be paralyzed in many ways, not just physically. This book trumpets a message of HOPE for those that are physically paralyzed or otherwise struggling with life. Wholeness is possible - for everyone because of Jesus Christ who is the same yesterday, today and forever!Get ready for a boost of hope, life vision and proven strategies to cope with your situation as Dr. Adams coaches you and your family through the adjustments necessary for those suffering from spinal chord injury. His 58-years of quadriplegic experience and his ability to convey his wisdom in such practical and applicable ways make this book truly supernatural. If I was given a million dollars, I would spent it on giving tons of copies of this book to every hospital, every waiting room and every psychiatry service in this country. Get a copy! It is worth every pence.

Where does happiness come from? How is it possible, in the face of suffering and loss, to remain responsive and compassionate toward all people? In The Courage to Be Happy, best-selling author and meditation teacher Sylvia Boorstein looks into core teachings of Buddhism and Judaism, and she emerges with complementary truths about the happiness that is always available to us despite external circumstances. Boorstein uses her "two vocabularies" - one Buddhist, the other Jewish - to tell how, after years of meditation and prayer, she came to know why the Buddha was called in his time "The Happy One". Fearless and challenging, The Courage to Be Happy is, most of all, about the real meaning of this moment.

Sylvia was so enjoyable to listen to that I looked on Amazon for her books on tape. I've listened to this one at least three times as I drive to work in the morning. It has been a wonderful way to start my day and a wonderful way to change my perspective, or my mind habits.

Multicultural Counseling Workbook: Exercises, Worksheets & Games to Build Rapport with Diverse Clients, by Leslie Korn

Review "A comprehensive, collaborative and insightful workbook, it offers the clinician opportunities to reflect on their personal cultural identity and socialization while encouraging a deeper understanding of the role of power, privilege, and the complexities of culture, ethnicity and race in other cultural communities. This workbook provides practical worksheets to help professionals moreover establish rapport and relationship with their clients. Dr. Korn's book is a gift to the field of mental health and will support culturally responsive professionals."---Priscilla Sanville, PhD, Professor Emerita, Creative Arts in Learning and Social Justice Facilitator, Lesley University, Cambridge, MA "A wise traditional birth attendant from Darfur once told that 'knowledge is like a garden: if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested.' Leslie's workbook is an effective fertilizer to cultivate multicultural counseling in the garden of clinical knowledge. It's a great resource for clinicians and healers to develop multicultural competencies and mindfulness to diversify their work. It can also be used as a 'refresher' for many kinds of helping professionals."---Janaka Jayawickrama, PhD, Lecturer and Community Care Practitioner, University of York, United Kingdom "As a university faculty member and clinical practitioner, I think Dr. Korn's book is a wonderful, comprehensive and much needed resource for cultural competency development. The narrative assists the reader in the exploration of one's personal cultural self-awareness and helps the acquisition of new skills. I found this workbook to be the best multicultural counseling field guide I've read in many years. It provides a thorough compilation of information, worksheets and exercises that clinicians will value for a long time to come."---Dinah Manns, EdD, Research Lead/Faculty, Human Behavior-Couseling Studies, Capella University, Minneapolis, MN "Dr. Korn's Multicultural Counseling Workbook is challenging, innovative, thought-provoking, educative, and experiential. All the qualities you want in an engaging workbook. When families and nations struggle behind unconscious masks of prejudice and bias, all efforts to heal illusions are welcome. The book is a valuable tool for nurturing change." - --Joseph Randolph Bowers, PhD, Senior Counseling Psychotherapist: Cultural, Indigenous, Disability, and Mental Health Specialist, University of New England, Austrailia"The importance of multicultural competency in our conflict-ridden world can't be overstated. It is in everyone's best interest. But the work involved in disentangling one's prejudices is intense, and this book is here to help. Designed for clinicians and clients, there is something here for everyone." ---Estelle Disch, PhD, Professor Emerita of Sociology, University of Massachusetts, Boston "Leslie Korn has produced an impressive, highly accessible workbook on diversity and rapport building that will be of great benefit to counselors and professional help givers. Most importantly, it provides invaluable tools and exercises to facilitate better recognition, understanding and processing of feelings and beliefs regarding diversity in those of us who work in counseling. It is at the same time comprehensive and learned, yet highly readable with many case examples and illustrations. It is a gift to those who wish to be more adept in practicing in a more diversity-sensitive manner." - --John Ludgate, PhD, Author, Psychologist, Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy"The Multicultural Counseling Workbook provides and abundance of information about the cultural experiences of a variety or ethnic and other cultural groups, as well as practical exercises that encourage honest reflection, help identify assumptions and subconscious influences, while also challenging them to move beyond them. Some of the workbook's best moments are vignettes that show Dr. Korn's efforts to address sensitive topics, assess cultural influences and build therapeutic rapport with a variety of clients. Merging scientific theory with a practical, clinical approach, Body of Awareness explores the formation of infant movement experience and its manifest influence upon the later adult. Most significantly, it shows how the organizing principles in early development are functionally equivalent to those of the adult. It demonstrates how movement plays a critical role in a developing self-awareness for the infant and in maintaining a healthy self throughout life. In addition, a variety of case studies illustrates how infant developmental movement patterns are part of the moment-to-moment processes of the adult client and how to bring these patterns to awareness within therapy. Body of Awareness is intended to help therapists, new or advanced, to enhance their skills of attunement. They can do this by heightening their observations of subtle movement patterns as they emerge within the client/therapist relationship, and by respective their own developing feelings within session as essential information to the therapy process. And as developmental patterns are central to psychological functioning, a background study of movement provides the therapist with critical insight into the unfolding psychodynamic field.

Review

"It is a rare person in my experience who can say; 'This is what, how and why we did what we did.' Ruella Frank's manuscript gave me joy as it wove in and out of case example, theory, and personal reflexive involvement. For the therapist her work is essential; for the lay person excellent for self help."

- Richard Kitzler, M.A., Founding Fellow, New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy

"In Body of Awareness, Ruella Frank has given us an exceptional integration of movement patterns with adult psychotherapy. I recommend this book highly."

- James Kepner, Ph.D., author, Body Process and Healing Tasks

"The case studies are thorough, multidimensional, and poignant.  For those who do body work, this book should be an indispensable library addition.  For those who do not, it offers an eye-opening opportunity to hone observational skills and perhaps to learn some techniques of body intervention."

- Stephen Johnson, Ph.D., author, Character Styles

"She provides sensitive and exquisite case studies and shows a deep understanding of movement, development, and therapeutic change.  This book will find a wide and receptive audience."

- Esther Thelen, Ph.D., author, A Dynamic Systems Approach to Development

"Ruella Frank's brilliant account of the processes by which we learn/discover movement from infancy provides us with a template from which we can delve into a deeper sense of self and fullness of being."

- Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, author, Sensing, Feeling, and Action

Landau There has been way too much written about the chances, or perhaps lack of, that are possible for people over 50 finding love. All the chatter, the magazInes, even movies feature the young with taut bodies and perfect complexions and full heads of hair. Love seems to offer infinite possibilities to these perfect young people. As we approach 50, or ye gods, 60 or 80 (!), we think, or we're taught to think, we've HAD our turn at love, and we invite ourselves into the grazing pasture as we wait for death. Finally! A book by Carol Denker, unabashedly titled, AUTUMN ROMANCE depicts 29 love-filled and hope-infused stories of couples all over 50, finding love in lots of unexpected and some ordinary places. Some were earnestly looking, some were taken by surprise, and each, in their unique way, found not just amazing love, but love, in many cases, so much better than they'd experienced in the past or certainly in excess of anything they'd imagined. If anything is to be learned from reading these stories, it is that with a change of attitude, a willingness to take care of one's self and pursue your dream and to be willing to share your life with another, great and abiding love is possible.....at any age. Thank you, Carol Denker, for a beautiful book.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful and Inspiring By Ruthy Wexler This book is as moving and powerful and beautiful as love itself. The photographs alone are worth the price! There is so much in it--the beautiful photos and pages, the beautifully written stories, the Advice at the end. But mostly there are the stories and each one says so much. The people are all different, from different states and backgrounds. There is a wonderful story of a gay man who finally found himself. These are ordinary people who are brave, honest and....well, not so ordinary. Love comes like a blessing for them at unexpected times and ages and so we understand, it can come for us too. This book is so lovingly put together--it will be a great addition to any coffee table. It makes a beautiful gift but you will also want to read the stories over and over for yourself.

My hope is that every divorced, widowed or lonely person in the U.S. will read Autumn Romance: Stories and Portraits of Love after 50 soon. This books is a source of comfort and hope for everyone who has given up on love. Denker, a writer with a deliciously dry sense of humor, met the man of her dreams when she was in her 60's. This experience led her to travel the nation seeking the most compelling mature love stories that she could find. The result is a book that is beautifully written, lavishly illustrated---and full of surprises. The 29 couples profiled in this book are as diverse and interesting as America itself and readers will never forget them. My favorites are Vernon and Judy Lee of Denver, Colorado. Vernon is a physician who spent so many years living up to the expectations of others, that he forgot about his own happiness. His transition from a man who was quietly miserable to a person who finds joy with the kind and sensitive Judy is wonderful to behold. Don't forget to explore Carol Denker's own remarkable story----it's the last profile in this remarkable book. As a reader and a librarian, I love this book. You will too.
