This is an inspiring, therapeutic book written from a unique perspective for paralytics & people with disabilities, doctors, nurses, physical therapists, caregivers, family and friends. The author, Dr. Wes Adams, Ph.D., is himself a quadriplegic from a car accident at the age of 16. He has written Wholeness is Possible from almost 58 years of experience in a wheelchair. This book provides practical wisdom and hope for recovering a full, purposeful and meaningful life!
As a practical handbook, it contains much important information for both paralytics and health care professionals who work with spinal cord injured individuals. The book addresses the building blocks and the recovery stages necessary for a paralytic to make the journey toward wholeness.
In order to advance beyond physical rehabilitation recovery, other “recovery spheres” must also be given attention after trauma. This book focuses on all dimensions of personhood affected by paralysis. Physical-mental-emotional-spiritual dimensions of life, along with social issues, are all essential aspects of restoration and healing in a whole-person recovery. While this book's objective seeks to maximize physical recovery, it does so within a paradigm of wholeness.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fresh insight into life as a quadraplegic By Mrs. J. F. Hall Although the original prognosis for Wes Adams after his accident was little short of hopeless, nevertheless this book gives understanding of how he surmounted the serious obstacles that confronted him. Wes has lived nearly 60 years since his initial injury, that fact alone could find him a place in the Guinness book of Records. Generally those who have this type of spinal cord injury, which Wes sustained at the age of 16yrs, do not live for as long as he has. There are many reasons for Wes’s longevity . Perhaps one of the greatest reasons is the faith and hope in God which is the bedrock of Wes’s life. This book is an encouragement and challenge not only to people who have suffered SCI but to all who have the desire to live a full and productive life. When we got to know Wes Adams in 1995 he had travelled to the UK with his wife Jane. The trip itself was a miracle considering Wes’s condition. He shipped over his specially equipped vehicle and spent several weeks travelling around the UK. When you read the original prognosis that he would, ‘not live a long life, nor would he be in good health as long as he lives’ this trip was a miracle in itself. It goes to show the indomitable spirit in which Wes leads his life. This book brings out again how disciplined and focussed he is in his life. This is an easy to read informative and inspiring book not only for people with Spinal injuries and their families but for anyone who is feeling life has dealt them a tough lot – wholeness is possible
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wholeness made practical By Jeanie Jacks I was sent a copy of this book and at first glance it looks like an educational textbook, complete with anatomical charts, diagrams, and photos, but I found this book to be so engaging and easy to understand. I am a nurse who has case managed several disabled individuals and found some really useful information. It will help the paralytic who is trying to cope with the trauma of hopelessness, as well as the caregiver or family member challenged with trying to understand the rigorous day in day out commitment of caring for someone who has lost mobility and independence. There are tips on nutrition, skin care, exercise and adaptive equipment. Any medical or behavioral health trained professional who may feel reticent about how to deliver optimism to someone learning to adapt should also read this book, and there are features of paralytics who have pursued successful careers. The message is clear: Wholeness IS Possible, with some transparent and practical guidance. This author does a wonderful job of sharing his own journey and experience from dire diagnosis, to physical, emotional, and spiritual health and hope.

Easy to read, informative and very refreshing. As someone who is not personally affected by paralysis, I found this book extremely helpful for anyone who suffers from trauma, or who struggles with impossible or life-restricting circumstances. You can be paralyzed in many ways, not just physically. This book trumpets a message of HOPE for those that are physically paralyzed or otherwise struggling with life. Wholeness is possible - for everyone because of Jesus Christ who is the same yesterday, today and forever!Get ready for a boost of hope, life vision and proven strategies to cope with your situation as Dr. Adams coaches you and your family through the adjustments necessary for those suffering from spinal chord injury. His 58-years of quadriplegic experience and his ability to convey his wisdom in such practical and applicable ways make this book truly supernatural. If I was given a million dollars, I would spent it on giving tons of copies of this book to every hospital, every waiting room and every psychiatry service in this country. Get a copy! It is worth every pence.
