Review “I almost never cry at books and this one made me sob. Twice! Powerful, surprising, and packing a serious emotional punch, The Gate to Futures Past is a true game-changer. —Karina Sumner-Smith, author of Radiant “Czerneda excels at creating sympathetic characters and building intricate and fascinating worlds.” —Publishers Weekly   “Her multi-species style space opera universe...is a hallmark of the form, a fully realized saga of aliens and races and cultures that stands alongside works like C.J. Cherryh’s Chanur-verse.” —SF Signal"Complex worldbuilding, unique aliens ('Assemblers!?'), a race to save a sentient species: Julie Czerneda’s This Gulf of Time and Stars will draw readers in and ’port us among planetary systems, each more dangerous than the next." —Vonda N. McIntyre, author of The Moon and the Sun "Julie Czerneda’s narrative style is as masterful, intricate, and beautifully constructed as the complex universe of This Gulf of Time and Stars. A compelling and delightful read stuffed with enchanting characters and unexpected plot turns." —Stephen Leigh, author of The Crow of Connemara "Julie Czerneda is a first class builder of worlds that challenge the imagination and characters who seize your heart. This Gulf of Time and Stars is a compelling page turner, and I was sorry to reach the end. Then the author left me with a smile." —Jenna Rhodes, author of King of Assassins "Czerneda’s latest SF brims with sense of wonder, her amazing worldbuilding, and serves plots that span worlds. Don’t miss out!" —Tobias S. Buckell, author of Hurricane Fever "Warning! Gulf is nonstop, pitch-perfect, and possibly addictive. Julie Czerneda brings together M’hiray past, present, and glimpses of the future, and then shows us in the most gripping fashion just how much we’ve come to love these people and their story. Sira di Sarc is just the right heroine—full of both compassion and power—to take the Clan through the final stages of this dangerous search for their true origins. And, dare we hope...a place to call home?" —Doranna Durgin, author of Sentinels: Leopard Enchanted "Julie Czerneda is a scientist first, asking this amazing question: What if an inherited characteristic of immense value to individuals and society was linked to a risk to the species as a whole? Sira di Sarc is Czerneda’s way of exploring this question—across worlds, species, and yes, time and stars. I’m impressed by Czerneda’s well-known ability to create fully-fledged alien races, intriguing plotlines, beautifully drawn worlds, and—last but not least, believable inter-species romance! This Gulf of Time and Stars, the first in the Reunification trilogy, will appeal to readers of both genre and literary works." —Ursula Pflug, author of The Alphabet Stones "Julie Czerneda’s triumphant return to science fiction proves once again that she’s the master of story, worldbuilding, and characters. Heartwarming, fast-paced, and just downright fun, new and existing fans of The Clan Chronicles won’t be able to put this book down." —Marie Bilodeau, Aurora-nominated author of the Destiny series

A blend of hard science fiction and interstellar space opera, with a solid basis in biology By Bob Milne This Gulf of Time and Stars advances both the story and the Clan’s situation, introducing us to an era where they have been secretly invited into the Trade Pact, and then just as secretly exposed, adding the threat of extermination to that of extinction. While it could be read on its own, readers will get a lot more out of the story with knowledge of what’s come first. Julie E. Czerneda doesn’t waste a lot of time ushering readers into the world, instead throwing us right into a crucial negotiation between leaders of the races threatened by the Clan. While The Trade Pact was about Sira, Reunification is very much about the Clan and Sira’s search for answers. For those who are new to the universe, Sira is an interesting character, a sympathetic heroine who is nothing like the terrifying monstrosity you’d expect of her race. When we first meet her here, she’s preparing for a “baby-rainshower-occasion” with her human partner, which is just as awkward and humorous as you might expect. In fact, Czerneda uses a lot of humor to establish the cultural differences between her races, which is a large part of what makes this such an accessible story. At the same time, while some of the alien customs may be humorous, the aliens themselves can be creepy as hell (the Assemblers may be my favorite alien race ever), and the stakes in the story are about as high as they can get on an interstellar scale. This is often a very dark story, with a large cast of characters, and multiple shifts in POV (including shifts from first to third person). Even I found it a little bit dense at times, and I was coming into it with knowledge of the previous books. New readers may require a little more patience, but it’s worth the effort, especially since Czerneda has such a free-flowing lyrical style to her narrative. Once you get to know Sira and Captain Jason Morgan, and begin to piece together the backstory from their discussions with others, you’ll find yourself caring about the central mystery a lot more, at which time that style will carry you along nicely. This Gulf of Time and Stars is a blend of hard science fiction and interstellar space opera, with a solid basis in biology that makes for some fascinating reading. It’s a very different sort of story from her Night’s Edge fantasy series, but it shows the same love for her characters and the worlds she’s created.

In two previous series, she told the story of the Clan, a group of aliens similar in appearance to humans but who have tremendous psi powers. The Stratification trilogy covers the origins of the Clan, while the Trade Pact trilogy describes the interactions between the Clan and other species, including humans. That series centers around two main characters, Sira, the most powerful Clan member ever born, and Jason, a human with psi talents who falls in love with her.Sira and Jason return in this book, which picks up not long after the end of the Trade Pact trilogy. The way the Clan has treated other alien species, using their psi powers to manipulate, enslave, and even murder them, has created some deadly enemies. These enemies launch an attack that results in mass murder, while the few remaining members of the Clan desperately flee, looking for a place of safety. Led by Sira and Jason, they are able to return to the planet where their people originated—but it is no safe haven, either. However, the story of the Clan is even more mysterious than they themselves knew, and Sira, Jason, and a small group of survivors thus find themselves fleeing again, continuing the hunt for a place they can call home . . .Since this book is tied so closely to the two previous series, readers who haven’t read those earlier books are likely to find themselves struggling with the story told here. I really enjoyed the Trade Pact trilogy. Since the last novel in that series came out in 2002, however, I had to work a bit to dredge up enough memories to follow the references to characters and situations that occurred in those books. Having never read the Stratification trilogy, I really felt like I was missing out on some of the nuances tied to those novels, although I did get caught up enough in the story that I was willing to work through the sections that were confusing. I think I would have benefited from reading all those books before tackling this one, though.Even though the story was a bit difficult for me to follow in spots, I was happy to be reunited with the characters of Sira and Jason and to find out more about the Clan. Because most of the book involves the Clan fleeing for their lives, the story keeps up a fairly lively pace, which is slowed a little by fairly regular switches between character viewpoints (something that might annoy some readers). Since the author has a background in biology, her alien creatures and their worlds feel a bit more realistic than those of some other sci-fi authors, another big plus for me. The continuing mystery of the Clan has me hooked, too, so I’ll definitely be picking up the next book in this trilogy.Highly recommended for readers who enjoyed the earlier Clan novels—but I'd suggest reading them again first! An ARC of this novel was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Return to Cersi By Arthur W Jordin This Gulf of Time and Stars (2015) is the first SF novel in the Reunification series, following To Trade the Stars. This volume is the seventh in The Clans Chronicles sequence. The initial volume in this sequence is Reap the Wild Wind.In the previous volume, Sira was part owner of the Silver Fox and the lover of Jason Morgan. Yet they could not get any privacy for the interruptions, even in midflight. Other Clan Council members were not comfortable with technology, so they didn't call before they dropped in for a chat.Nor do the Rugherans. Then Sector Chief Lydis Bowman did call to invite the Morgans for a talk. The Conciliator just happened to be alongside the Silver Fox.One of Bowman's constables seemed to have been brain-wiped, despite her implanted mind-shield. Also, Bowman had received reports that seven ships had landed on Acranam and left shortly thereafter. Moreover, a human telepath, Naes Fodera, had been murdered on Plexis.Jason was able to help the supposedly brain-wiped Constable. Sira learned that the seven ships had been used to transport fosterlings from Acranam to other planets. Then she traveled to Plexis through the M'hir to check on Huido.Huido was having problems at the Claws and Jaws on Plexis. Naes Fodera had shown up at the restaurant . . . in pieces. His only remaining Certified Multi-species Master Chef wanted to serve the remains to the customers. Huido finally fired his Chef, but was left without anyone to cook for the restaurant. In this novel, Sira Morgan is the Speaker for the Clans. She is the Chooser of Jason and calls the Silver Fox home.Jason Morgan is a human telepath. He is one of the most powerful ESPers within the Trade Pact. He was powerful enough to Join with Sira without dying.Barac di Bowart is a M'hiray. He is a former First Scout and a cousin of Sira. He is the Chosen of Ruti.Quessa di Teerac is a M'hiray. She is a Birth Watcher.Huido Maarnatoo'kk is a Carasian. He is the owner of the Claws & Jaws.Tayno Boormataa'kk is a Carasian. He is the nephew of Huido.M'Tisri is a Vilix. He is the host of the Claws & Jaws.Lydia Bowman is a human. She is a Sector Chief in the Trade Pact Enforcers.Russell Terk is a human. He is a Constable in the Enforcers and works for Bowman.Theo Schrivens Cartnell is a human. He is a Board Member of the Trade Pact.Ambridge Gayle in a human. She is the Syndicate Head of the Deneb Grays.Sansom Fry is s human. He is the Syndicate Head of the Deneb Blues.Manouya is a humanoid. He is a smuggler and controls many ships.Magpie Louli is an Assembler. It is a hive mind that forms a humanoid shape from its many parts. In this story, Cartnell is hosting a meeting of underworld chieftains. They are waiting for Louli to arrive. Yet the others are getting impatient and Cartnell starts without it.They each have a disk with data on the Clans. Cartnell has the names and locations of most of the Clansmen. Manouya has the ships to take assassins to those locations.Louli enters a bit late and contributes her information. She also volunteers her Assemblers as the assassins. Sansom and Ambridge provide other services. They are out to get the Clans. They plan a coordinated attack against every know Clansman. They hit Acranam hard and kill many Chosen. The Joined of these Chosen quietly lose their spirits and vanish into the M'hir.Meanwhile, Jason has sponsored a baby shower for Ruti. Since Ruti loves Yipping Prawlies, she eats in the Claws & Jaws whenever they are on the menu. She and her Chosen are expected any minute now.MTisri signals that the Bowarts have arrived. Bowman and Terk are ushered in one door by Tayno. He is confused and believes them to be invited guests, but Sira is happy to have them.M'Tisri escorts the Bowarts in another door. They are rather muddled and are briefed on the human custom of baby showers. They sit down and the dinner starts. Then everybody is ready for Ruti to open the gifts. Huido has given several present, mostly clothes. Sira gives her Quessa as their Birth Watcher.Bowman has also brought a present. She gives Ruti a rattler for the baby and an Enforcer voucher for a trip and lodging. Barac and Ruti are very pleased, for they don't have any permanent housing.Cartnell frames Bowman for corruption. She hears about it from an informant as she leaves the baby shower. Now she is on the run. This tale eliminates most of the Clansmen. From nine hundred and thirty-three in the Trade Pact, they are reduced to slightly more than a hundred. Sira leads them in a migration back to Cersi. There a machine changes their minds. The next installment in this sequence -- The Gate to Futures Past -- has not yet been announced on Amazon.Highly recommended for Czerneda fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of internal conflicts, interstellar teleportation, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!-Arthur W. Jordin

The actual book ended at just 73% through. The rest is previews and such. Based on the earlier books, I preordered this as soon as I knew it was coming out. Not sure I would have done so if I'd known it was so short and lacking in the depth I've come to expect from this author and series of books.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. HLB Reviews Guarding Sophie By Home. Love. Books. I don't know why, but I really thought this was a full length book, but it was a novella, and surprisingly I enjoyed it. I am normally not a fan of novellas, but the character development in this book was pretty good and the fact that our hero and heroine knew each other going in made the whole thing just work all the better. This book is in the middle of the series, but I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything by not knowing some of the secondary characters as well as I would have if I had read the other books. So when the book starts we meet both Sophie and Kyle who are both going through some hard times in their lives. Sophie has left all her family behind and started over from scratch after leaving behind an abusive and slightly crazy ex-boyfriend. She goes from being a school teacher with strong connections to her family, to living in someones mother in law suite in a tiny town across the country from her family and is now working at a grocery store. What I liked the best about Sophie is she doesn't spend a lot of time feeling sorry for herself, which frankly anyone would understand if she had. She's a strong girl, she stood up for herself, she made a new life for herself, and she didn't let herself become a shell of who she used to be. Sophie is someone I would love to be friends with.Kyle is a guy Sophie knew from high school, and he has definitely made good on his life, becoming a professional athlete. But Kyle just wants to get away, which is how he ends up with a cabin in a small town. I felt for Kyle, who basically just wanted to be a good guy, good friend, good teammate, good son. But his family, and his so called friends, were basically bleeding him dry. I mean to the point where when he tries to get away from them they hire a kind of skeezy private investigator to track him down so their money trail doesn't dry off. Kyle is such a good guy, and when he sees Sophie after all these years, well the chance to get the girl who got away is one he can't pass up; and he is going to protect Sophie no matter what. There were parts of this novella that were suspenseful, but over all this whole book was just super sweet. I wanted Kyle and Sophie to work out right from the start, they are just two really nice people who have great chemistry together. If you are looking for a feel good novella then this is definitely a good choice.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing By Valerie A Kader I am a big sports fan, a big sports romance fan, and have read all of the books of this series. They seem to be getting less and less enjoyable over time. In this particular book, I thought the heroine was quite lame. She let her life get completely away from her, ran away, and then seemed to be living in limbo when she re-met the hero. The hero was also very bland, no good looks or charismatic personality to speak of. There were no football scenes, and the dialogue was boring and unnatural. I barely read the second half of the book, just skimmed over it so that I could call it finished and move on to something else.

The recent financial meltdown has brought notable changes to the global practice of health care changes that have often escaped the American news media. Although Western managed-care corporations previously had strengthened their influence abroad, now many countries are considering new approaches to health care for their citizens. The untold story of how corporations have influenced global health care and the impacts now in America as the system rapidly shifts is Dr. Waitzkin s subject in his provocative new book. We now live in a new era in which the prospects for more humane approaches to health care are taking root. Strengthening access and improving public health are at the heart of the many previously little-noted struggles and actions by individuals, groups, and whole nations to put control back in the hands of patients and practitioners, as Americans of many political stripes seem to universally seek. The impacts of these changes in the United States are considerable, and they are amply illustrated by Dr. Waitzkin as the United States attempts to reorient its own system of care.Selected as the 2012 winner of the Freidson Outstanding Publication Award by the American Sociological Association for its "bold and timely analysis of the global political economy of contemporary crises in health and medical care. By presenting the lessons learned from social medicine (past and present), [it] outlines a macro-sociologically informed response to these crises.""

Medicine and Public Health at the End of Empire, by Howard Waitzkin

Review Watizkin s book offers an insightful, research-based, political expose via a compelling historical depiction of the invariable link between medicine (in the form of health and health services delivery) and empire, Journal of Anthropological Research "Health-care reform is a lively and contentious topic, but, as Waitzkin shows in this informative study, our debates on reform are too narrowly framed. His thoughtful analysis raises important questions about conventional assumptions of doctrine and practice and scrutinizes alternatives, among them notably the record of social medicine in Latin America." --Noam Chomsky, MITInfluenced by Latin American ides of social medicine that link health outcomes to social conditions, Waitzkin (U. of New Mexico) analyzes historical and current patterns of medicine and public health in the Americas within the broader social context of capitalism and American imperialism. He first considers broad historical theme, including the role of the international health organizations in strengthening the empire, the development of the international market for health products and services, and the impact of resistance to empire on public health and health services in Chile and Cuba. Turning to more recent issues, he explores the impact of neoliberal policies on public health and medicine, relationships between macroeconomic policies and health, efforts to export the for-profit managed care model of the United States to other countries, the role of international financial institutions in pushing for privatization of health services, the ideologies of the different stakeholders involved in struggles over global trade and public health, and the impact of war on the health of military personnel. Finally, he presents various social medicine initiatives in Latin America as examples to follow as the empire wanes. --Eithne O Leyne, June 2011 Reference and Research Book News"For the past three decades Howard Waitkzkin has been (along with Vicente Navarro) the leading social medicine theorist in the United States. Medicine and Public Health at the End of Empire provides a superb sampling of Waitzkin's wide-ranging work, and a readily accessible introduction." --Steffie Woolhandler and David Himmelstein in Monthly Review

About the Author Howard Waitzkin is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Sociology and the School of Medicine at the University of New Mexico. He also practices medicine as a primary care practitioner in rural northern New Mexico. His work focuses on social conditions that lead to illness, unnecessary suffering, and early death.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Pretty good By Eric Blair This is a very good book on the topic. It delivers what it promises but I'd like to give my warnings/complaints:It is very dense. Despite my passion for this subject, the amount of time I spent on each page is far longer than usual, even for academic literature. I feel as though I would need to re-read the book to really extract all the worthwhile information in it, but don't see myself being able to do that for quite some time. To read this book is a taxing affair. Also, I grew weary of rereading some version of the phrase: "this process entailed such and such policy reforms and personal outcomes: deregulation of XYZ, public funding, increased privatization, worse personal health outcomes, increased cost per individual." While these outcomes are obviously at the crux of what the book is concerned with, I feel as though I have read the same sentence a few too many of times. It may have been desirable to write something like: "this resulted in the set of outcomes classically associated with neoliberal polices."Aside from those two complaints, let me say that this book is highly valuable and I sincerely thank Waitzkin for writing it. It clarified much of what I had suspected and I believe it has both informed and positively impacted the way I will approach issues public health. So again, if this sort of topic interests you and you are indeed dedicated to it, pick up the book and see what you think. It may address much of what you believed to be true, but it is helpful to see it put down in writing and exhaustively cited. Thanks, Dr. Waitzkin, I look forward to your future works.

Split Second (SPECIAL PRICE) (King & Maxwell Series), by David Baldacci

From Publishers Weekly "We just solved a huge, complicated mystery," says one protagonist to another in this latest novel from the bestselling author of Last Man Standing, Absolute Power, etc. And that is the problem: this story of two disgraced Secret Service agents who come together to solve two campaign-trail crimes doesn't play to Baldacci's strengths, which are suspense and action (as well as strong characterizations; here's one thriller author who writes people that readers care about). The novel is primarily a mystery, with lots of talk and untangling of clues, and a less than gripping one at that. It begins in 1996, when Secret Service agent Sean King is distracted-by what isn't revealed until near the book's end-just when the presidential candidate he's guarding is shot dead. Eight years later, agent Michelle Maxwell lets the candidate she's watching enter a funeral parlor room alone; he's kidnapped. Then a body appears in the office of King, who's now a successful lawyer in North Carolina. Maxwell sees King on TV and decides to look into the event that caused his disgrace, so similar to hers. Meanwhile, King's old flame, Joan Dillinger, an ex-agent whose security firm has been hired to find the kidnapped presidential candidate, hires King to help in the hunt. The narrative ties binding the characters don't loosen much over the novel's course, as curious cross-currents flow between the two cases, all leading to a cinematic but off-the-wall denouement that reveals a villain who is more cartoon than human. What saves this novel are a few strong but brief action sequences and, above all, the interplay among the principal characters, particularly the romantic tensions among King, Maxwell and Dillinger.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Baldacci's new thriller is sustained by the pulse-pounding suspense his fans have come to expect. Sean King is a former Secret Service agent whose career ended eight years ago when the political candidate he was protecting was assassinated. Now a lawyer, King has organized his life to forget his past, but it barges rudely in on him when he finds a colleague murdered in his office building. Further complicating his life are two women: Joan Dillinger, a former coworker and lover, and Michelle Maxwell, a Secret Service agent whose candidate, John Bruno, has just been kidnapped. Sean and Michelle start to suspect that their candidates' fates are connected and begin to investigate any ties the two may have to each other. It doesn't help that the police are on King's case, especially when yet another body turns up, this time in King's house. King and Maxwell turn their focus to Arnold Ramsey, the man who assassinated King's candidate, but it remains unclear if he was working alone. Meanwhile, the danger mounts, for neither King nor Maxwell can guess who the conspirators' next target is. Kristine HuntleyCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Review "Baldacci's brain-teasing plot leaves you wanting more...high scoring shoot-'em-up."

Excellent thriller -Ending was a little too unbelievable By SDRTX Secret Service Agent Michelle Maxwell let a presidential candidate out of her sight against her better judgment. He disappears with a trace. Eight years ago, Sean King's career as a secret service agent was derailed when the presidential candidate he was protecting was killed in front of him when his attention was diverted for a split second. Michelle and Sean's lives entwine when the circumstances of their respective screw-ups appear to be related.David Baldacci has written another winner. This was book had me hooked from the first page. The plot was skillfully written interweaving past and present facts. We have two very compelling protagonists that look like they were set up for a sequel, at least I hope so. This is the kind of thriller that keeps you on your toes from the first page to the last. It would have been a 5 star book, except the climax was a bit too unbelievable. It was almost like a light bulb went off and suddenly the case is solved. It all unraveled a little too fast. I don't want to give too much away, but the first 4/5 of the book was so good that the ending really did not detract from my overall enjoyment.

Unlike his previous works it is definitely not a strong, tightly written novel, although it could have been a real winner. Throughout much of the book, the thrills, adventure and mystery are certainly present and do keep the reader turning the pages. The three main characters are interesting, unusual and well developed. So, what's wrong? The second half of the novel falls apart. The pace slows; the tension diminishes; the characters begin to act out of character, and turn into cardboard figures without much rationale for their actions. The villain, who has such potential to be a really bad guy, is totally one-dimensional - pure evil incarnate with no complexity, more like a cartoon than a human being. There's a fascinating love triangle which should have taken-off - but falls flat. And after the terrific opening and much of the first half, the conclusion is weak. The book ends with a peep, not a bang!Sean King, Secret Service agent extraordinaire, with great career potential, is guarding a presidential candidate on a campaign stop in Smalltown USA. King's attention is diverted for one instant, and good cause, when the candidate, Clyde Ritter, is shot dead. Agent King recovers his composure immediately and shoots the assassin. The killer dies. So does King's career.Eight years later Secret Service agent and girl wonder Michelle Maxwell is on a career fast track in a profession where only men succeed. Agent Maxwell, a former Olympic rower, is the exception to the rule. She has her sights set on White House duty guarding the president and she just might get the gig. She is presently guarding a presidential candidate, John Bruno, who is making an unscheduled stop at a funeral home to pay his respects to the deceased. The room is vacated except for the candidate, the corpse and the widow. Bruno insists on time alone, without security. Uncomfortable with the candidate's decision, Maxwell, and fellow agents stand outside the closed door, 99% sure their charge will be safe. He is kidnapped right out from under their noses. Michelle may still have a job, but her career is over. She is determined, however, to find John Bruno before he is killed - if indeed, he is still alive.Former agent King is now living in a house he designed and built on a quiet lakefront in Virginia. He went back to school for a law degree and shares a practice in town. Sean reads of agent Maxwell's fall from grace and feels great empathy because of his similar experience. His empathy chills considerably when Ms. Maxwell shows up at his door with some questions and a theory that the murder and the kidnapping, eight years apart, just may be related. She provides some convincing arguments, and it doesn't hurt that King is wildly attracted to her, so he considers the ramifications of working with Michelle on the case. Then he finds a body, dead, in his law office. Just about this time, an old flame and colleague of King's, Joan Dillenger, turns up, apparently on-the-make. They haven't seen each other in eight years. She was with him the day before the assassination and stayed with him that night in his hotel room, leaving her black lace panties on the ceiling light fixture for the maid to remove the following morning.Joan, Michelle and Sean combine their considerable resources to solve this mystery which just keeps getting more complicated - and interesting. But there is someone out there, in the background, with even more resources, who is playing them all with extraordinary expertise.Given my above comments, if you are a Baldacci fan, then the book is certainly worth reading. It's just a shame he didn't tighten up his narrative and hone the plot.JANA

26 of 28 people found the following review helpful. how very disappointing.... By John Hawkins what a shame - I really enjoyed Baldacci's previous books, and found them to be well written and engrossing, and most of all, believable. This one is too over the top - the characters are too stiff and wornout, and it has the most ridiculous and over-the-top unbelievable plot I've ever read - it reminded me of a Scooby-Doo plot line, it was that ridiculous. David, next time don't just punch the clock and mail it in - your fans don't appreciate it.

In the heart of Louisiana s Atchafalaya Basin, a letter sent from an isolated settlement, addressed to Hautes-Pyrénées, France, and marked undeliverable, shows up at the Bayou Chene post office. That same day locals find a dog, nearly dead and tethered to an empty skiff. Odd yet seemingly trivial, the arrival of a masterless dog and a returned letter triggers a series of events that will dramatically change the lives of three friends and affect all of the residents of Bayou Chene.

Gwen Roland s debut novel, set in 1907 in a secluded part of Louisiana, follows young adults Loyce Snellgrove, her cousin Lafayette Fate Landry, and his friend Valzine Broussard as they navigate between revelations about the past and tensions in the present. Forces large and small the tragedies of the Civil War, the hardships of swamp life, family secrets, as well as unfailing humor create a prismatic depiction of Louisiana folklife at the turn of the twentieth century and provide a realistic setting for this enchanting drama.

Roland anchors her work in historical fact and weaves a superb tale of vivid characters. In Postmark Bayou Chene, she uses the captivating voice that described the beauty and challenges of the swamp to legions of readers in her autobiographical Atchafalaya Houseboat. Her ear for dialogue and eye for detail bring the now-vanished community of Bayou Chene and the realities of love and loss on the river back to life in a well-crafted, bittersweet tribute.

Review ''A winding portrait of rural life that remains congenial even as it's tinged with the dangers of the swamp. . . . [Roland's] first novel is a satisfying story that pays homage to a bewitching landscape.''--Foreword Reviews''Postmark Bayou Chene is a sweet story of resilient survivors who love, quarrel, and above all, hang on, in a tiny village that even in 1907 was a backwater. . . . A rewarding, richly peopled novel that immerses us in turn-of-the century swamp Louisiana and makes us wish we were there to taste Adam Snellgrove's unforgettable catfish.'' --NOLA Diaspora

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It’s a story of love, loss and the power of community By Louisiana Book News An empty skiff arrives at the Bayou Chene post office with a nearly drowned dog tied to its side. At the same time, an old letter arrives from Hautes-Pyrénées, France, marked undeliverable. Both events will change the small hamlet located in the Atchafalaya Basin and the lives of its residents. So starts Gwen Roland’s debut novel, “Postmark Bayou Chene,” a delightful tale set in 1907 that follows the lives of young blind Loyce Snellgrove, her cousin Lafayette “Fate” Landry and their friend Valzine Broussard, plus a host of other colorful characters. It’s a story of love, loss and the power of community, no matter its size. Everything revolves around the isolated town’s post office, run by Loyce’s father, Adam. It’s the heart of the small town, even though it’s a complicated mess since Adam lost his wife years prior. Despite her blindness, Loyce functions well in her home with the aid of education from a Baton Rouge school and her attentive cousin Fate. Valzine, meanwhile, works the bayous and rivers, playing music with Loyce on occasion. When the skiff arrives, the trio brings the dog back to life and Fate insists he will be a helpful companion to Loyce. The empty skiff also brings an unusual couple to the area, and an abandoned newlywed arrives not long afterwards, bringing order to the post office but chaos to the couple. But it’s the letter, arriving many years later, that changes the folks of Bayou Chene, particularly the trio of young people who must choose how to make their way in the world, whether on the bayou or away. Roland is the author of the autobiography, “Atchafalaya Houseboat: My Years in the Louisiana Swamp,” also published by LSU Press, so her attention to detail about the Atchafalaya town, both historical and environmental, adds sweet richness to the tale. In the end, however, it’s the characters who steal your heart. I felt my own loss when I reached the last page.

And the characters are so relevant that you really care about them. The story is captivating and it takes you to a past time and place that you somehow feel you’ve been to before.
