Smith I am in my late 60's and my family has seen our share of medical issues and have had plenty of dealings with the medical industry. I decided years ago I had better start managing my own health because no one else was going to do it for me. I started reading books written by doctors but nothing really got my attention until I read Protein Power by Eades. That book made me realize that all the conventional wisdom concerning eating, including our government approved food pyramid, was totally backwards. I changed my eating habits and the change in health and loss of excess fat was dramatic. Then I discovered the Life Extension Foundation, which does research and makes vitamins. They have had to battle the FDA and they have written many scathing articles critical of this organization. I came to understand that the FDA and the drug industry were much too closely connected to each other and drug industry profits were paramount and the health of the people came second. Anything that interfered with this system was crushed by our FDA, which has all the power of the federal government behind it. A person could be imprisoned for selling a food or vitamin and claiming that it would help some illness, even if it were true. A doctor could lose his license for treating a patient in any manner other than that approved by the FDA. It made no matter that the alternative treatment was working and the approved method was not. Then one day I stumbled upon Healthwyze.org. I spent the next two days reading articles on this website. I bought the products that they sold and found that they worked, especially the Byteback for insect bites. I bought their DVD titled The Cancer Report, which included the history of how the FDA and our medical schools were founded and financed by Rockefeller. I read about colloidal silver and how useful and safe it is and how to make it. I made a batch for less than $10 a gallon. My son had paid $10 an ounce for it and was using it to stop the progression of colds and ear infections in his 8 year old. He is now using the stuff I made for practically nothing thanks to their website. When they announced they were selling a book, I bought it the first day it came out. It is a compilation of articles on their website plus a whole lot more. Anyone that is interested in their health should read this book. They do not cut anyone any slack if they think what that organization or person is selling or doing is harmful. It doesn't matter if it is FDA approved or an alternative method. They are fearless and hard hitting. The information in this book will help guide you to better health and better ways to treat illness, accidents, and medical emergencies. I think every person in America should read this book. It is a tremendous eye opener. It just might save your life.

To make a very long story short, I have been personally harmed by M.D.'s with drugs they had given me, so I turned to natural healing and never looked back! I did much research and purchased many alternative healing books while I was very sick and this was one of them. Historically, many good scientists who discovered tried and true healing methods have had their life's work destroyed by the AMA and the Big Pharma as it posed a threat to their money driven industry. The authors here have written a valuable book to help expose the medical fraud and deceit that exists today and offers valuable health solutions that I am very familiar with. This is one book to add to your collection as they meticulously research healing methods for your review. From someone who has been there and experienced the devastating effects of drugs as well as heavy metal toxicity, please do your research and do not let the negative reviews by the scaremongers make you hesitate as it just might cost you your life! Start taking responsibility for your own health.....you will never regret it! God bless you.

Tons of information and truth, however there are just a couple of complaints that I have.. For one the people that wrote the book are Christian but they must be some sort of denomination. Like another reviewer said the depression chapter recommended a hypnotist type of healing and they also have some strange views on the bible. My second complaint is they do not use references. Maybe this is to intrigue readers to research and verify the information themselves I do not know (It worked on me if that was their plan) I have been researching things on my own also and the book is usually right on.. BUT I recommend this as being a guide to self healing. Do not take everything you read in without speculation, as that type of thinking got Americans into such trouble with believing health care lies, among other things. I DO highly recommend reading this book PLUS taking time to research topics on google on your own and make your own decisions about natural therapies or diet plans. This book personally changed how I viewed food and my body. I now have the tools to aid an open mind to live a healthy life and heal myself. Since reading I have changed my diet dramatically and helped family members and friends also make healthier decisions in their lives as well.

A Treatise of Human Nature is a book by Scottish philosopher David Hume, first published (in parts) from the end of 1738 to 1740.The full title of the Treatise is A Treatise of Human Nature: Being an Attempt to Introduce the Experimental Method of Reasoning into Moral Subjects. It contains the following sections:

Book 1: "Of the Understanding" – An investigation into human cognition. Important statements of Skepticism.Book 2: "Of the Passions" – A treatment of emotions and free will.Book 3: "Of Morals" – A treatment of moral ideas, justice, obligations, benevolence.

While many scholars today consider the Treatise to be Hume's most important work and one of the most important books in the history of philosophy, the public in Britain did not at first agree. Hume himself described the (lack of) public reaction to the publication of the Treatise by writing that the book "fell dead-born from the press."

Hume intended to see whether the Treatise met with success and, if so, to complete it with books devoted to morals, politics, and criticism. It did not meet with success, and so was not completed.

After deciding that the Treatise had problems of style rather than of content, he reworked some of the material for more popular consumption in An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding (1748). It did not prove extremely successful either, but was somewhat more so than the Treatise. He later also "cast anew" Book 3 of the Treatise as An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals (1751), which Hume wrote is "of all my writings, historical, philosophical, or literary, incomparably the best."

The Treatise is now in the public domain. Books 1 and 2 were originally published in 1738 (or 1739), while Book 3 was published in 1740.

About the Author David Hume was an eighteenth-century Scottish philosopher, historian, and essayist, and the author of A Treatise of Human Nature, considered by many to be one of the most important philosophical works ever published.

Hume attended the University of Edinburgh at an early age and considered a career in law before deciding that the pursuit of knowledge was his true calling. Hume s writings on rationalism and empiricism, free will, determinism, and the existence of God would be enormously influential on contemporaries such as Adam Smith, as well as the philosophers like Schopenhauer, John Stuart Mill, and Karl Popper, who succeeded him. Hume died in 1776.

Be aware that the reviews for a book are displayed not only for one edition, but for all editions under the same title. The Oxford Philosophical Texts edition of Hume's "Treatise" should be the standard student edition. The Prometheus Books edition is cheap, but it does not include a modern introduction or any study notes. I recommend the Oxford Philosophical Texts version if you want or need more than just the raw text.

Oxford's edition by the Nortons is the only one to buy By James Fieser Since Hume's Treatise first appeared in 1739-1740, several distinct editions have been published. While most of these are fine for casual use, the Oxford University Press edition, recently prepared by David and Mary Norton, stands alone as an outstanding scholarly achievement. Their edition, at present only available in the Oxford Philosophical Texts student edition, will within the next year or so also be available in a scholarly edition (Oxford's Clarendon Edition). These two versions have the same text of the Treatise. The difference between them lies in their introductions and annotations, which are suited to different sets of readers. Part of the value of both versions lies in these exceptional introductions and annotations. The other part, though, involves the Nortons' editing of the text of the Treatise itself, which, ironically, makes their edition more accurate than Hume's original. While the original edition of the Treatise was being printed, Hume instructed the printer to make changes to the text, and thus some first editions read differently than others. The Nortons have compared first-edition copies of the Treatise page by page to locate these changes. Pen in hand, Hume also scribbled other changes into several printed copies of the Treatise; the Nortons have accounted for those alterations as well. These are just two examples of many editorial tasks that have gone into making this the definitive edition of Hume's Treatise, the edition which will remain the standard for decades. Let me add a word regarding the critical comments that an anonymous amazon.com reviewer made about the Nortons' edition ("A reader", January 18, 2003). This reviewer's comments may be well-meaning, but I can say with confidence there is little substance to her/his objections. The edition has been widely hailed as a triumph by Hume scholars and scholarly reviewers, and the philosophy editors at Oxford University Press tell me they are completely delighted with the work.

The Greatest Achievement of Our Greatest Philosopher By ctdreyer Before he chose to diddle away his later years writing book after book of history, playing house with Rousseau, annoying the religious authorities, and forging a lasting reputation as an all-around good guy, Hume dedicated his youth to writing the this book, which is nothing less than the single greatest work of philosophy in the English language. Indeed, I don't think there are even any other close competitors for that title. Naturally, then, this work was largely ignored during Hume's lifetime.Notwithstanding the widely told, and somewhat accurate, standard story of the history of modern philosophy according to which Kant's rearguard action in response to Hume is the culmination of the modern period, I think that this book rather than Kant's First Critique is where it's at. Certainly, no book of modern philosophy compares to this complex, intricately argued, inspiring, maddening, imaginative, iconoclastic, encyclopedic tome when it comes to influence on contemporary philosophers in the Anglo-American analytic tradition. And while it's true that Kant's system is almost unparalleled in the breadth of its influence, defenders of the traditional story of modern philosophy need to remember that 'almost'. For it seems to me that, among the moderns, Hume got there first. He, and not Kant, is the first modernist whose importance is manifest in all the main areas of philosophy: epistemology (skepticism and the problem of induction), metaphysics (causation, personal identity, etc.), philosophy of mind (action theory, rationality) meta-ethics (meta-ethical subjectivism, proto-noncognitivism, reason vs. emotions, moral psychology, etc.), normative ethics (importance of benevolence, justice as an artificial virtue, etc.).Want some evidence of Hume's pervasive influence? It's not just that everyone working in this tradition has read Hume, though they have. Nor is it just that Hume's stamp is all over the concerns and positions of contemporary philosophers, though it is. Nor is it just that Hume's influence is celebrated (or bemoaned) by pretty much every philosopher you come across, though that's true as well. No, the true measure of his intellectual ascendancy is that there's a position dubbed "Humean" in pretty much every area of philosophy, and, depending on one's view of the topic, it's either the obviously correct view--it was Hume's position, after all!--or a pernicious heresy for which no good arguments have been provided and for which there isn't good reason to think it was even Hume's actual position. You know you've made it when both the defenders of the status quo and those who can't abide that status quo claim you as their own.Why is Hume so important? I think there are two reasons, each corresponding to one of the influential interpretations of Hume's work as a whole. The first interpretation of Hume's corpus sees it as shot through with a radical skepticism about anything and everything, and corresponding to this interpretation is a conception of Hume's importance as consisting in his occupying the place of the philosopher opponent of common sense par excellence. Hume, according to this interpretation, takes the empiricism of Locke, which in his hands looks like nothing so much as self-conscious common sense, and wields it as a weapon against more or less everything we tend to believe. That is, we should see Hume as taking up the empiricism of Locke and Berkeley and pushes it to its logical conclusion: a thoroughgoing skepticism. Think you can know there is a mind-independent world of physical objects? Think you're a single person who persists through time? Think things stand in causal relationships to one another? Think you can know whether the sun will explode tomorrow? You should think again, Hume says, and he's happy to show you why empiricism leads to this conclusion. So, if this is right, the importance of Hume's project consists in its status as a for rationalists, for non-skeptics of all stripes, and for all ordinary, right-thinking folks.Now, undoubtedly, there's some truth in the stereotypical view of Hume as the young radical who took empiricism to its implausible limits. But this isn't where his true importance lies--at least not among contemporary philosophers. What has been most influential among contemporary exponents of the Anglo-American analytic tradition is Hume's unrepentant and radical naturalism. This interpretation of his project downplays Hume's skepticism and emphasizes his professed intentions to provide a positive account of the operation of the human mind that appealed to nothing beyond the evidence of our senses. According to proponents of this interpretation, Hume is most interested in a description of the operation of the human mind. He's describing what human nature allows us to know and what it doesn't allow us to know. Here Hume's importance consists not in his providing a challenge to the views of philosophers and of the hoi polloi, but in his providing us with a model of how philosophy should be done.I feel that I've strayed somewhat from the topic of the book here, but I suppose that was inevitable. It would, of course, have been pointless to attempt to summarize Hume's arguments, or even his conclusions, in a review of this length. The only summary of this book's content that the reader needs is this: Hume discusses nearly everything of importance in philosophy, and his discussions of nearly every issue reveal an unsurpassed (and rarely equaled) level of philosophical brilliance.To whom do I recommend this book? The answer, in short, is everyone. If you're even slightly interested in philosophy, you simply can't get by without reading this. If you're at all interested in the history of ideas, you need to read this. If you're the slightest bit curious about our modern worldview and its origin, it would be a good idea for you to read this. If you're interested enough in Hume to have come across this review and read it to this point, you'll want to read this.Concerning editions of this book. I wish Amazon would separate the various editions of this book so I could review them separately, but they haven't. I'd recommend either the edition jointly edited by the Nortons and published in the Oxford Philosophical Texts series or the Selby-Bigge edition, which was for some time the standard edition of the Treatise.

Another Terrific Amos Walker Mystery By Benjamin Boulden THE SUNDOWN SPEECH is the most recent entry, 25th overall, in Loren Estleman’s justly celebrated Amos Walker private detective series. Dante and Heloise Gunnar were swindled out of $15,000 by a would-be director named Jerry Marcus. Jerry hooked the couple for an investment in a film dubiously titled Mr. Alien Elect, and when he stopped returning telephone calls the couple contacted Walker. It is a straight missing person case and Amos reluctantly takes it; reluctantly because the Gunnar’s, particularly Heloise, are off-putting to his working class sensibilities, and all the leads are in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A scant 45 minutes from his beloved Detroit, but worlds apart—“The place looked as far away from the Motor City as Morocco.”The setting is post 9/11, but not by much. The preamble is as cool and stylish as anything I’ve read:“Roll the clock back a dozen years, maybe more; Michael Jackson was still alive, Iris, too. I could walk all day without limping. Tweet was bird talk, the chain bookstore was the greatest threat to civilization since ragtime music, and the only time you saw a black president was in a sci-fi film. Going back is always a crapshoot.”And it only gets better. Amos Walker is his usual smart ass and hard-boiled self, and the mystery is something of a locked door job. This time, however—and not to give too much away—the locked door is in the police forensics lab. The supporting cast is college town unusual; big and brassy while lacking experience and boasting excessive aspirations. A photographer who photographs nudes in public places not minding the accompanying public decency ticket and bail money for his model. The local police have a thing for writing parking tickets, and the detective working the case keeps giving Amos a polite, but resolute “sundown speech”—thanks for your help, please go back to Detroit. Amos doesn’t much want to stick around either, but the facts keep him there as the case turns more and more serious, and more and more curious.

Adams This is perhaps the fourth "Amos Walker" novel I've read, but the first in many years. The only reason I withheld a fifth star is that I found it a tad heavy in description, while I prefer my "hard-boiled private eye" reading to be top-heavy in dialogue, a la the late Robert B. Parker. I must say the descriptions are well-done, but not vital in my opinion. However, I liked the plot and characters, and if you do buy or borrow this book, do not skip the brief "author's note" at the end. It clarifies why this entry exists and why it is set where it is. It's good enough so that halfway through I drove back to the branch library and turned it a police procedural that had bored me enough in the first 40 pages to make me give up on it, and instead I checked out the Amos Walker episode from the prior year, which I will begin tomorrow. Although there is no sex in "The Sundown Speech" and I never mind a little of that in my private eye thrillers, there are nude people involved. Enough said. I don't like reviews with spoilers.

By Bob Manning The phone rang while I was busy on a case; that's to say, I was busy searching my desk for the bottle of Scotch that until yesterday was in the bottom drawer of my desk but had now mysteriously disappeared. No doubt the cleaning crew, in a fit of safety-consciousness, had removed it as a hazard.“Yeah?” I growled, after spearing the receiver on the second ring.The caller identified himself and I relaxed.“Sorry,” I said, “I was overdue for my daily cold-call from the Church of The Eviscerated Wallet.”My caller, a well-known, syndicated jounalist who bought his shoes one at a time, laughed on his end of the line.“What is it about you P.I.s and your aphorisms? Walker's like that all the time - can barely function without a cynical wisecrack.”“We all get hit on the head with the Collected Works of Chandler at some point,” I told him, not looking at the leather-bound tome on top of the filing cabinet. Sometimes I use it for inspiration, sometimes for a paperweight – Chandler is multi-purpose.“But speaking of Walker – what's he been up to lately?” I asked, not having heard from my friend in a while.“He's good – had a missing persons case recently that turned into more – got hired by a couple out in Ann Arbor who put money into some movie producer's project - ““Don't tell me – the movie guy vanished with the money and the investors didn't want to involve the police.”“Something like that. And get this – Walker finds the guy in a day, a bullet in his head and no sign of the money.”“Cops like anybody for it?”“The husband of the couple who hired Walker. Another laugh at the end of the phone.“The guy's wife and attorney hire him a second time to prove the husband's innocence, and while Walker's out doing his thing, someone takes a shot at him – while the suspect's still in a cell.”“Sounds like the husband was set up,” I mused. “Walker get hit?” I was a little concerned, given his recent past – lately he seemed to attract bullets like an electromagnet.“No, he's fine – I don't even think anyone had to bail him out of a hospital this time.”“That's a first – how's he doing with the Vicodin thing?”“No mention of it to me – and you know, when he gave me the story, there was a clarity in the details that reminded me of some of his early cases. Like he went out into sunlight for once, I don't know how to describe it.”“And you a prize-winning journalist? Dr. Fitzgerald tells the story of working with youth as an afterschool and summer camp director and becoming increasingly alarmed by the number of children, especially black males, on psychotropic medication. Later in his career, as Fitzgerald becomes a School Social Worker and earns his doctorate, he gains front-line experience and learns the historical underpinnings of how Whites have exerted power over the emotional, physical and social well being of African Americans, and denied them access to sources of power and advantage. He then researches the startling statistics of the increased drugging of our youth, especially black males, and poses some difficult and challenging questions that ask why...for what purpose are these children medicated? Has drugging children become another means of oppression? Fitzgerald is courageous in confronting this issue and challenges the reader out of our comfort zone. While you might not always agree with everything Fitzgerald theorizes, you will never think the same about how we are educating America's black male children. I would therefore urge parents, educators, medical practitioners, and those interested in social justice and equality to read this book. Our children deserve better.

She is 15 in 1973, when her worldly wise cousin Fawn, 16, arrives to spend the summer with them. Insecure and lonely, Jamie loves the idea of having a live-in friend and she immediately falls under Fawn's spell. Wanting more than anything to have Fawn approve of her, Jamie begins to remake herself, and a foreboding sense of the future emerges. Woven throughout the story are flashbacks that shed light on the intense and disturbing relationship between Uncle Raymond and Jamie's mother, Suzette. The parallel stories of Suzette and Fawn shed light on two people who are both disturbed and manipulative. Raymond and Jamie are the victims of the manipulation, but McLain deftly conveys the poor choices each has made along the way. Beautiful writing makes vivid the stark malevolence of Fawn, and the foreshadowing of impending tragedy is so palpable it is frightening. Characters are well drawn and the prose magnificent. Who hasn't been there? McLain's descriptions of Jamie's internal and external worlds bring it all back.Having read all of McLain's poetry and her memoir, her new novel is no surprise. The writing is sensual and heartbreaking, the study of character honest and deep. The secrets that connect Jamie and her uncle will haunt you just as they do their characters.If you liked Dorothy Allison's Ruth Anne in [...] out of NC or Carson McCullers's Frankie in The Member of the Wedding or Marilyn Robinson's Ruth in Housekeeping, then you'll like Paula McLain's Jamie in A Ticket to Ride.Read this novel & then go back and read McLain's other work. You won't be sorry.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Gorgeously written, but... By A. You It's gorgeously written, so I was somewhat surprised that I didn't love A Ticket to Ride. The main reason was the going back and forth between the present and the past, which I found distracting - just when I was beginning to get involved in Jamie's and Fawn's story, the novel took me back years, to find out about Suzette. And while the end made it clear why this narrative device was necessary, it didn't make it any more engaging.

Each chapter is titled with songs from the era, and sometimes, I could almost hear the music lilting in the background.As the summer draws to a close, these two young girls seeking excitement have stumbled upon a whole world of trouble and tragedy.As Jamie is trying to sort out and understand what has happened, she and her uncle finally sit down to talk, and in a few moments of soul-searching honesty, Jamie learns the whole saga about her mother and what happened so long ago. Examining the realities of the past and revisiting the moments of one hot summer full of errors in judgment, Jamie will finally begin to discover her place and her identity.The characters are multilayered, with all the facets of real people trying to make sense of their lives, the choices they've made, and the possibilities that are left for them. Four stars for an insightful story that, while it may not be for everyone, is a relevant coming-of-age tale set during a unique time in history.
