When Rania―the only female Palestinian police detective in the northern West Bank, as well as a young mother in a rural community where many believe women should not have such a dangerous career―discovers the body of a foreign woman on the edge of her village, no one seems to want her look too deeply into what’s happened. But she finds an ally in Chloe―a gay, Jewish-American peace worker with a camera and a big attitude―and together, with the help of an annoying Israeli policeman, they work to solve the murder. As they do, secrets about war crimes and Israel’s thriving sex trafficking trade begin to surface―and Rania finds everything she holds dear in jeopardy. Fast-paced and intricately plotted, Murder Under The Bridge offers mystery lovers an intimate view of one of the most fraught political conflicts on the planet.

Review “One of the best mysteries I've read in a long time. Kept me from doing ten important things I should have been doing because I just had to finish it! Kate Raphael writes great women characters and does a fantastic job of portraying the realities of Palestinian life as background to a gripping story.” —Starhawk, best-selling author of The Fifth Sacred Thing and The Spiral Dance “Strong and complex female characters, a unique and vividly drawn setting, and an utterly compelling story―Kate Jessica Raphael offers you everything you could possibly want in a page-turning mystery. Let's hope this is the first of many novels to come.” —Elaine Beale, author of Murder in the Castro “[Murder Under the Bridge's] mix of murder and politics makes for fascinating reading, made even richer by the revealing glimpse of life in the occupied territories.” —Booklist “A stunning mystery novel by a talented new writer. Anyone picking up the book will be drawn in by Rania and Chloe, a dynamic, realistic, pair of women sleuths . . . An outstanding addition to the global mystery field. More, please!” —Sujata Massey, author of The Sleeping Dictionary “Raphael has created a wonderful cast, most especially her Palestinian policewoman, Rania… Authoritatively and vividly rendered, Murder Under the Bridge is a compelling read.” —Karen Joy Fowler, author of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves and The Jane Austen Book Club

A page-turner filled with delicious cross-cultural counterpoint By East Bay Reader I was hooked from the moment Rania, the Palestinian police detective and protagonist of MURDER UNDER THE BRIDGE, finds the body of a young, foreign woman under a highway bridge outside the West Bank village of Azzawiya. The first novel of the Palestine Mystery series is a page-turner.The author’s portrayal of Palestinian life under Israeli occupation opens a window onto a world that most readers wouldn’t otherwise see through the lens of news and op-eds from and about this part of the world. Raphael’s matter-of-fact portrayal -- the intricate and engrossing scenery against which her mystery plays out -- is filled with delicious cross-cultural counterpoint as Rania works her murder case with occasional help from a solidarity activist named Chloe, who is American, Jewish, and a lesbian. Chloe’s bold determination and driven empathy makes her as much a sister to Rania in their common sense of justice (and obstinate resolve to see it realized) as the two are opposite in nationality, religion, and sexuality. This combustive mix of similarity and juxtaposition also surfaces in Rania’s wary co-investigation of the murder with Israeli detective Benny Lazar. Rania holds a guarded respect for her Israeli counterpart, despite his frustrating obliviousness to the threat of haram (shame) in the eyes of her community as she travels, interviews suspects, and lunches alone with a colleague who is both a man and an Israeli. The tension between Fatah and Hamas is unavoidable in a story set in the West Bank, but inter-Palestinian politics too are rendered not in wild, accusatory polemic, but in the recognizably-everyday business of behind-the-back jockeying for position and advantage in the bureaucracy of a police department. The constant backbeat of invisibility and dismissal that both Rania and Chloe face as women operating in social territory claimed by men is drawn with sharp humor. In one of my favorite scenes, three Israeli police officers can’t find the deportation prison to which they are supposed to be taking Chloe and, classically, drive around and around the coastal city of Hadera into the wee hours of morning rather than stop and ask directions. By the time they arrive at the razor-wired complex at two in the morning, Chloe reflects that, “She had never been so glad to see the inside of a prison.”A great read, with twists at the end that leave readers with a vivid sense of just how far complicity with occupation and exploitation extends even into the ranks of Israeli progressives. Still, the book offers hope that seekers of justice -- in this book, characters drawn from Israeli, Palestinian, and Jewish-American cultures -- will continue to act with compassion and integrity, even at the risk of offending their fractious compatriots.(I received a free, advance reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.)

A view into Palestine By Amazon Customer In “Murder Under the Bridge” Kate Jessica Raphael paints an illuminating picture of daily life in the West Bank of Palestine, ranging from checkpoints, home demolitions, and settler violence to ordinary family life in Palestinian Arab culture. And she does it all in the context of a page-turner who-done-it style mystery novel! I was engaged from page one! Not only is the story engrossing, but Rafael’s characters are captivating and illuminate the wide variety of people that populate this landscape, from Israeli and international activists to Arab villagers in the West Bank, including a spunky hijab-wearing policewoman, to high-level officials in the Israeli military and their immigrant nannies. Each one is intriguing and thought-provoking regarding their unique roles in the landscape and their own personal motivations. The story centers on three women: Rania, the policewoman, Chloe, the activist from San Francisco and Nadya, the murdered immigrant whose body is inexplicably found under a bridge in the West Bank of Palestine. I found myself wanting to eat a falafel with Rania and learn more about how she balances her family life with the demands of her chosen work which she pursues with as must passion as she has for her child and husband. I wanted to share an espresso with Chloe when she returned home (I live near San Francisco) to understand how she could work so long in such a stressful and tragic place. And for sure I wished that I could have helped Nadya defend against the powerful forces aligned against her.As the mystery unfolds, the complexities of Israeli politics and policies in Palestine are revealed in tandem with solving the murder mystery. Both are satisfyingly resolved, however deeply disturbing. As would be the case of any novel about Palestine. This is a must-read for anyone who loves a good mystery or for anyone who wants a deeper description about a part of the world that is often shallowly represented or even misrepresented.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. is a fine book. Set in the occupied West Bank By Barbara Rhine "Murder Under the Bridge," by Kate Raphael, is a fine book. Set in the occupied West Bank, otherwise known as Palestine among its Arab inhabitants and their Israeli, American and European supporters, the well-paced mystery explores a milieu most American readers know little about. Right there it has that wonderful advantage of well-written fiction--the reader gets to inhabit a far-away place s/he may never get to visit in person, and to understand--even it could be said to experience--subtleties s/he will not find in sociopolitical analyses.Raphael has two female narrators: Rania, a Palestinian policewoman, and Chloe, an American Jewish lesbian activist. Both are similar in their acerbic inner observations about female life under male domination, and this theme is amusing and insightful at once. Their lives are very different, however, when it comes to family and friends. While concerned about each other's welfare, they are not necessarily going to be close. (Raphael has a second book in the making, so perhaps we will soon find out.)The plot, of course, centers on the need to solve a murder. The victim, surprisingly, is neither Palestinian nor Israeli but instead a European woman brought over by a sex trafficking ring. Both police and suspects span the spectrum from ordinary Palestinians and Israeli Arabs trying to live their lives, to political activists from both these Arab communities, to Israeli activists, to Israeli leaders, to Israeli religious settlers. These categories are not always mutually exclusive, so the fabric of the book is complex.Raphael manages to negotiate all this without becoming unintelligible, which is a fine achievement. And she deftly explores the persistent complexities of language that swings between Arabic to Hebrew to English and back. Do be sure, however, to use the glossary early and often. I found it too late. The solution to the mystery met E. M. Forster's two requirements for good plot: 1) it slips in unexpectedly, and 2) it appeals to the reader's intelligence in hindsight. The author could have explicated a bit more about the emotional reverberations when the truth is found out, but that is a quibble. So why four stars instead of five?Well, this reader wanted more conversations about the issues of the day. Wouldn't Rania and her husband, both politically sophisticated, discuss the fundamentalism that had to already be on the rise in this period, shortly before the Hamas electoral victory in Gaza? Chloe and Trina--why not have them compare notes on how it felt to be tourist outsiders, one Jewish and the other Palestinian? Wouldn't demonstrators who want to stop Israeli bulldozing of olive orchards talk about where the peace process was or wasn't, whether the two-state solution was viable and/or desirable at all, how a non-Israeli dominated society could ever come to pass in this place? Maybe Rania could be asked by an ignorant American when she puts on and takes off her hijab and jilbab within her own community, and why?Raphael is from an activist milieu where such issues are debated fervently, and she is a very good writer. Without being pedantic or needing to arrive at answers, she could have woven such exchanges into the fabric of both daily life and action around the murder, to further expose the texture of this heady place that is at the source of so much conflict in today's world.Do not let this keep you from the book. "Murder Under the Bridge" is a fine read, both for mystery aficionados and for those who care about Israel, Palestine and the Middle East. And if you happen to fit in each category, you will be very pleased with this book and already looking forward to the next.

"These pocket-sized titles are stunning....They make the perfect stocking stuffers!" - Metro "Bought together or separately, these fiction titles are ideal stocking stuffers for the literature lover." - USA TodayNewly reissued as a Picador Modern Classic, Marilynne Robinson's brilliant, PEN/Hemingway Award-winning first novel

Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, who grow up haphazardly, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, the eccentric and remote sister of their dead mother. The family house is in the small town of Fingerbone on a glacial lake in the Far West, the same lake where their grandfather died in a spectacular train wreck and their mother drove off a cliff to her death. It is a town "chastened by an outsized landscape and extravagant weather, and chastened again by an awareness that the whole of human history had occurred elsewhere." Ruth and Lucille's struggle toward adulthood beautifully illuminates the price of loss and survival, and the dangerous and deep undertow of transience.

For more than twenty years, Picador has been producing beautifully packaged literary fiction and nonfiction books from Manhattan's Flatiron Building. Our Twentieth Anniversary Modern Classics line pairs iconic books - The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse, Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson, and Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson - with a design that's both small enough to fit in your pocket and unique enough to stand out on your bookshelf.

Housekeeping: A Novel (Picador Modern Classics), by Marilynne Robinson

From Publishers Weekly Their lives spun off the tilting world like thread off a spindle," says Ruthie, the novel's narrator. The same may be said of Becket Royce's subtle, low-keyed reading. The interwoven themes of loss and love, longing and loneliness—"the wanting never subsided"—require a cool, almost impersonal touch. Royce narrates natural and manmade catastrophe and ruin as the author offers them: with a sort of watery vagueness engulfing extraordinary events. Occasionally this leads Royce to sound sleepy or to glide over humor. But she expresses Ruthie's story without any irksome effort to sound childlike, and she avoids the pitfall of dramatizing other characters, such as the awkward sheriff, the whispery insubstantiality of Aunt Sylvie or the ladies bearing casseroles to lure Ruthie away from Aunt Sylvie and into their concept of normality. Originally published in 1980 and filmed in 1987, Housekeeping is finally on audio because of Robinson's new Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Gilead. The novel holds up remarkably and painfully well, and the language remains searching and sonorous. Anatole Broyard wrote back then: "Here is a first novel that sounds as if the author has been treasuring it up all her life...." And because the author's rhythms, images and diction are so original and dense, this audio is a treasure for listeners who have or haven't read the book. Based on the Picador paperback. (Aug.) Unlike any novel I've ever read By Debbie the Book Devourer This book revolves around two sisters, Ruthie and Lucille, told from Ruthie's point of view. After their mother abandons them on their grandmother's doorstep, they are raised by the grandmother, then by her two sisters-in-law, and finally by their Aunt Sylvie, who always seems about to join up with her mind, which is always somewhere else. The plot of the book is hardly the point, however. The words are. Reading this book was like looking at an impressionist painting or living inside someone's dream or reading her mind. Words and sentences on their own don't seem to make much sense, but in the context of the larger work, they swirl to form feelings, images, dreams, fears, and thoughts, bouncing from one to another to form a narrative whole. The resulting picture is utterly stunning, dripping with metaphor and stacked in layers. This is one of the most skillfully written books I've ever read. Aside from a couple passages I found hard to get through, the book captivated me completely from beginning to end. Read it slowly to enjoy every word.

I fully agree with the radio commentators on the quality of Robinson's writing and the richness of her imagery. As urged by Doris Lessing (in a review quoted on the jacket), I read this slowly and then more slowly, and will probably return to it again, but unlike several other readers I did not find it heavy going, for its essence does not lie in its plot but in the enfolding and refolding of its thoughts.A difficult book to understand? Yes surely. But very unusually in my experience, the jacket blurb includes a phrase which provides the perfect key to reading this book: "the dangerous and deep undertow of transience." It is, in fact, a meditation on impermanence, and it operates on a plane of recurrent and beautifully crafted imagery whose overall effect is almost surreal and certainly spiritual. The facts of this particular story are unimportant compared to the sense that everything we have and are in this world, and all the "housekeeping" we frantically undertake to keep hold of it, are temporary at best. I have certainly felt this myself, and I am not depressed but consoled to know that others understand this too.Robinson's beautiful writing does have another side to it, however. Unlike other books about childhood, this one is narrated in a voice of exquisite sophistication. But the authorial voice does not square with what we know of the education and later life of the heroine, giving a self-conscious air to its artifice, despite the manifest poetic talent of the writer. Read as a sustained prose poem, however, the book is nothing less than superb, a minor masterpiece.[Thinking again about this book a year after reading it, I also recognize that, although the details of its plot may vanish, it is one of those rare novels whose atmosphere and message grow and deepen in the memory, long after one has laid it down.]

Intellectually demanding By Pygmy Warrior I am somewhat amused by the clear split between the reviews posted here: either the readers loved it or absolutely despised it. There is very little middle ground. This book is clearly difficult - I'm an avid reader, hold a degree in Comparative Literature and am an English teacher and I found myself reaching for the dictionary often. This is not a book to take lightly. It is not a novel that should be read as a simple fiction. This novel requires a lot of mental involvement and you will be exposed to different ideas, ideas that many people seem to find off-putting. It is so well written that you could, if you wished, fly through it quickly but I don't recommend it. Slow down and savor the words and phrasing and analyze the characters. This book is about a family trying to survive and cope with death and permanence. It is a slice of the darker side of life that most people wish to ignore. Yes, it's painful at times but most lessons tend to be so. It's a book about survival and trying to find a place in society; or whether you want to be a part of that society or not.Housekeeping is not light entertainment. You will have to work and study it but it is so beautifully written that it is a joy. Settle down with your dictionary and enjoy it. I know I did.

The first Gareth and Adele Novel, The Geomancer is the start of an ongoing, character-based, urban fantasy series set in the same Vampire Empire universe as the authors’ previous trilogy! The uneasy stalemate between vampires and humans is over. Adele and Gareth are bringing order to a free Britain, but bloody murders in London raise the specter that Adele's geomancy is failing and the vampires might return. A new power could tilt the balance back to the vampire clans. A deranged human called the Witchfinder has surfaced on the Continent, serving new vampire lords. This geomancer has found a way to make vampires immune to geomancy and intends to give his masters the ability to kill humans on a massive scale. The apocalyptic event in Edinburgh weakened Adele's geomantic abilities. If the Witchfinder can use geomancy against humanity, she may not have the power to stop him. If she can't, there is nowhere beyond his reach and no one he cannot kill. From a Britain struggling to rebuild to the vampire capital of Paris, from the heart of the Equatorian Empire to a vampire monastery in far-away Tibet, old friends and past enemies return. Unexpected allies and terrible new villains arise. Adele and Gareth fight side-by-side as always, but they can never be the same if they hope to survive.

By VampireNovelFan After finishing the first set of books I thought we were at the end of adventures for Gareth and Adele. While I understand when authors want to move on I thought there was more that could be explored in this world. So you can imagine how excited I was to learn that The Griffiths would be returning to the Vampire Empire world. When I started reading it I did forget a few things that happened in prior books since it’s been a few years, but I wasn’t completely lost in what was happening. I do think if you’re new to this series that it would be to your benefit to start from the top. One book builds on the other. One improvement I noticed is that I was engaged from beginning to end. In the prior books they got off to a slower start for me and I didn’t really feel pulled in until later. One great thing about this series is that it’s so imaginative and the world building remains excellent. You really feel like you're escaping into their world of airships and flying vampires, etc. The action and adventure remains top notch. Adele and Gareth continue to make a great team with even better chemistry. They really are one of my favorite couples in the urban fantasy world. What’s even better is that even while they’re together they remain strong and interesting characters individually too. I liked that we were introduced to new characters but we saw familiar faces as well.I do wonder what is up with this new trend in books that I’ve been reading where the protagonists age prematurely. In the past it’s usually the reverse issue when dealing with supernatural characters. I’m not totally sure what that accomplishes. For the most part the plot was entertaining and moved along well. It accomplished what few books are able to do; it gave me book drop! I gave this a full 5 stars and though I haven’t read as many books this year, it is one of my favorites by a large margin. I’d love to re-read it at some point. As it stands now, my thirst for Gareth and Adele shall remain insatiable! I already can't wait for the next book!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A solid continuation of the Vampire Empire series By Hlizmarie The Geomancer is a continuation of the authors' Vampire Empire series featuring the Gareth, a vampire who acts like no other vampire, and Adele, Empress of Equatoria. It's an alternate history, steampunk adventure set in the late 1870s that's unlike anything I've read before. Although it's possible to read this book without reading the prior three, I wouldn't recommend it. There's a ton of history to all of the relationships, particularly to understanding Gareth and Adele, and action that led up to the start of this book. It's been a year since Adele used her geomancy to burn the vampires out of Britain and scorched the earth in the process. She and Gareth are trying to have a more normal life but they end up on the trail of a human who has the power to kill other humans via geomancy and of course he's working for the vampires. They chase all over the world in a quest to beat this man to a powerful geomancy tool and are outwitted at every turn. In the end, it's Adele, Gareth and some new allies against a massive vampire force led by a few familiar and nasty foes.I read over my review for the last book in the Vampire Empire series and ended it with the thought that I wanted to see where Adele and Gareth went from there. It's strange to get my wish and not be as excited as I expected. The book was a solid read but I didn't find myself as engaged as I was with the previous three. Gareth drove me nuts. A large part of the plot here revolves around Adele and Gareth finding other groups of vampires that are more like him than he's ever encountered. One group reveres him and his way of life as if they're disciples and the other essentially consists of vampire monks who have a different life philosophy. Both are capable of some of Gareth's more "human" behaviors and his reaction is pretty harsh. In particular, I really enjoyed the time they spent with the vampires in the Himalayas and how it forced Gareth to reassess his view of other vampires. I'd love to see them resurface in a future book since I think they have a lot to offer Gareth. I continue to enjoy Adele and Gareth together as well as seeing the supporting characters from the prior three books. The action was rough and dirty at times which is fine by me. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what I didn't enjoy except it's possible I had mentally closed the door on this series and had trouble opening it back up. I didn't think I'd read another book in this world and I might have been okay with that.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Even if you're new to the series... By OutlawPoet I haven't read the rest of the books in the series, and I'm not big on vampires, though I love urban fantasy and horror. I'm not certain what convinced me to give this one a try, but I enjoyed it.True, not being familiar with the series or the characters left me scratching my head on occasion. For instance, having finished the book, I still have little idea why Gareth is sometimes Greyfriar and why no one seems to know the difference. And I'm not all that certain about the history of the vampires and the humans, but I still liked the book. It's action packed, the description is very well done (dark, gloomy, and eerie), and I liked our vampires (better than most of our humans). While I don't know that I'll go back and read the other books in the series (I sort of feel like I almost know too much now about what happens), I still got a kick out of this.

Part personal memoir and part psychological treatise, “Finally Out” offers a rigorous look at why some gay men live straight lives and never come to terms with their true sexual orientation; why some men believe they are “too straight to be gay” even while engaging in secret sex with other men – and the challenges faced by those who choose to “come out” after living half a lifetime or more closeted. With professional insight Dr. Olson examines his personal transformation from a “straight” man living in a heterosexual world to a gay man beginning his education anew. He punctuates his story with revealing statistics from his interviews with gay men around the world and established studies on homosexuality, and with surprising historical facts that provide perspective on global cultural norms.

Given the large numbers of men who have come to the realization that they are indeed gay...no matter what their age when they discover it...this book can be utilized as a reinforcement of the feelings that come flooding out of nowhere when the discovery of their true self is revealed. Using his background of experience and expertise, Dr. Olson melds these two areas, along with factual and accurate studies done on the subject of homosexuality into a well rounded arrangement. Since this book is part personal and part professional, the two aspects jell into a cohesive combination that can help the men who the book is aimed at, while teaching others who are puzzled and perplexed as to why such a lifestyle change can happen so "late" in life. The real key here is not that it can happen at age 40 (and be considered late), but that it can also happen in successive decades on into ages 80 and over. Another critical component of this book that shows the human side of life is how Dr. Olson bares his soul multiple times when he describes some of the real life situations he faced while discerning his real place in the world as a gay man. The fact that his ex-wife and daughters (and grandkids) are all solidly in the corner of he and his partner Doug, is an indication that despite his turmoil inside that he may not have always been doing the right thing, it has somehow worked out just fine. Relationships are hard work, and no matter if it is with your partner, or your extended family...not to mention former social friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc., the rewards are out there to be had if you continue to forge on and follow your heart and soul. This is what Dr. Olson has done. Not only in redefining his life, but by undertaking this book and allowing others to share in his knowledge and experience...so that they may also benefit and prosper. Men need to know they are not always held to the stereotypical standards that society has earmarked for them. You can be tough as nails and still be gay. You can be athletic and butch as hell and still be gay. You can be whatever you like...but more than anything you have a right to be happy and you have a right to love someone with your full being...and if that someone happens to be another man who is the object of your desire, then this book is proof positive that you can do just that. This book is a real gem in that it is sincere, genuine and certainly non-judgemental (even to those who cast a derisive eye to the gay community). It is one man's story of how Loren has made his way in the world. Those who know him personally or those who have read his work here are lucky that he chose this forum to share his story. Prepare to learn about a tremendous man and prepare to learn about yourself...or those around you who may have embarked on a similar journey.

Douglas Bremner Psychiatrist and author Loren Olson writes an honest and unique story of what it is like to come out as gay at the age of 40. One of the strengths of this book is that not only is it empowering for people who have suffered similar identity and lack of self esteem issues related to coming to grips with their sexuality when it deviates from mainstream views about family and sexuality to see a psychiatrist tell a story that matches theirs, it is also very useful to have a medical and mental health expert offer a cogent and readable summary of the scientific literature and facts related to what he calls the MLM or men loving men. He uses this term to highlight the fact that many men who have sex with men, even exclusively so, do not identify themselves as "gay". They often live in conventional marriages with women and have families. They may say they "love" their wives but are not sexually attracted to them. MLM men see being openly gay as some sort of political statement that they don't agree with, i.e. they want to be seen as mainstream or conventional. But as Dr. Olson points out this can lead to a kind of schizophrenic existence, where certain "limits" are put on their sexual encounters, like no kissing, which serve to depersonalize the experience and detach it from loving connections with other human beings. The world of men living in this shadow world was something I hadn't thought of before, since as a straight heterosexual I didn't know much about it, and it is interesting as a student of behavior and mental health. But something I find equally interesting was Dr. Olson's experience of losing his father at the age of 9 and some of the conundrums he experienced as a result of that, like not knowing how to start a lawn mower. Losing a parent as a child is a wrenching experience and I would have liked to learn more about how that affected him (maybe we'll learn about that in his next book). I say that at the risk of someone jumping up and saying that I am going to attribute his sexuality to looking for a lost father. A comment like that is merely psychobabble since I honestly don't think we have much control of which way our sexuality develops. I comment on this because I explore the loss of my own mother at 4 1/2 in my latest book and I have only met a handful of people who have lost a parent in childhood, have seen few books about it, and only from another psychiatrist (In Her Wake).Doug Bremner, author of[ ... ]

Bringing About Greater Understanding By Bonnie Kaye For the past 26 years, I have been counseling straight women and gay men who find themselves in marriages that are not meant to be. It is difficult to find information as relevant and enlightening as this book to help women and their gay husbands to understand the reasons of why gay men marry. Dr. Olson has a wonderful way of explaining this so that everyone can get an inside look into these marriages and how they happen. This book is excellent as a resource for all parties involved including the children and extended families of gay men who marry. Hopefully this book will help gay married men who need to come to terms with the sexually into furthering their journey to those ends. Thank you, Dr. Olson, for sharing your story with honesty and sensitivity. People don't realize that this "isolating" situation affects millions of people in the United States and millions more throughout the world. Your book sheds light not only on the fact that it happens, but explains so clearly why it happens. I recommend this book to everyone who truly wants to understand this situation in his or her quest for healing.

Martians, a reincarnated Irish woman, a dead movie star, an insane anesthetist, and an obsessed U.S. Attorney General ― these disparate characters have something in common. Each was at the center of an incident of mass hysteria, in which frightened, grieving, and otherwise disturbed people abandoned their common sense. This fascinating book by a prominent psychologist explores several intriguing case histories of mass hysteria, from "The Great Disappointment" of 1926, in which thousands of believers dressed in white to await Jesus' return, to UFO sightings and other extraordinary phenomena.Author J. P. Chaplin examines historical incidents of mob mentality, including "The Last Days of Rudolph Valentino," which culminated in a New York City riot of 80,000 mourning fans; "The Secrets of the Nunnery," involving the sack of a Boston convent by an angry crowd in search of children's skulls; "The Martians Invade New Jersey," in which a radio drama was mistaken for a news broadcast; and other remarkable instances of mass delusion.

The subject is interesting, but the writing style is awful. The author goes out of his way to exaggerate the situations he describes. It would be far better if he would just present the facts and let them carry their own weight. An interesting book if you can tolerate his "yellow journalism" mode of writing.
