Like most socialist literature it idealizes the "worker" as an heroic figure standing astride history. The book advocates syndicalism (a system in which industrial workers' unions are the vehicles of political power), but it eschews the pseudoscientific rhetoric favored by Marx and Lenin. Sorel is not particularly strong on economics, and he knows it.What he does know is cultural history and he advocates political rebellion through violence and mythmaking. The book is essentially a broadside against Jaures and the calculative, creeping parliamentary socialism of fin de siecle France. He finds Jaures and his methods to be too meek and compromising. He characterizes parliamentarism (accurately) as a system of endless debate, dealmaking and "selling out". Sorel advocates revolutionary violence as a means to both power and the creation of a new mythic order. He correctly observes that the Jacobins were violent and bloody, yet they managed to create a mythology for the French Revolution which still held a strong cultural resonance in his day.Direct action, mythmaking and ruthless bloodshed were the means Sorel recommended for revolution. His ideas went largely unacted upon in France, but the anarchosyndicalists of Spain took him quite seriously. His greatest disciple however, was a young socialist named Benito Mussolini. Mussolini's Fascist movement was based upon direct action and inspired by a myth of a resurgent Roman Empire. Mussolini made explicit reference, again and again, to the importance of myth in revolutionary struggle.Sorel inadvertently became the prophet of revolutionary Fascism. Two asides: (a) there is no reason for corporate executives to keep this book by their bedsides - it contains nothing of economic value, and its ideology is thoroughly exhausted and devoid of contemporary relevance; (b) Sorel is one of the few French intellectuals besides Tocqueville who seemed to have a healthy respect for America and the American economic miracle.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sorel's Idealistic Memoirs vs Political Reality By James E. Egolf Georges Sorel (1847-1922) wrote an assessment of Socialism which often did not account for political realities. Sorel's work appealed to Marxists, socialists and anti-socialists, monarchists, traditionalists, and "Fascists" (whatever Fascism means). While Sorel considered himself a socialist, he scorned many socialists as too "soft" and compromising. Sorel ignored what was politically and economically possible. While Sorel was viewed as a "radical," he had respect for tradition. In fact, he justified the Athenians putting Socrates (470-399 BC) to death because Socrates threatened the traditions of the Ancient Athenians. Sorel argued that Classical Liberalism and capitalism were in a state degeneracy, and only socialist violence or direct action could cure the ills of degenerate Liberalism and a degenerate status quo.Sorel also claimed that he was not a confused idealist and condemned Idealistic reformers who distracted men from focus on direct violence and Sorel called for The General Strike. According to Sorel, political power undermined truth and socialist ideals and that power was a very corrupting influence. Sorel thought that Socialist Party candidates became too imbued with power and too compromised to be very effective. In other words, Socialist Party elected officials lost their lofty ideals-or Sorel's lofty ideas. Sorel contradicted himself when he cited French political writers who condemned the Catholic Vendee Rebellion. The Vendee Catholics resisted the French revolutionaries' mania and attempts to undermine Catholicism. The Vendee rebels used violence to repel oppression which is exactly what Sorel preached in the first place.Sorel then examined the corrupt French legal system. Sorel knew how "the rich and poweful" used the "legal" system to undermine and cheat working class people. Sorel cited that "radical" outlawed revolutionaries during the French Revolution became entrenched advisors during the tenure of Napolean I. No one could challenge Sorel's condemnation of the "legal" system and corrupt jurists. This phenomona was in line with Sorel's criticism of the parlimenatry participation of socialists.Sorel argued further argued that socialists "lost their souls" once elected to public office. As Sorel wrote, these men became mere job seekers and robbers. Sorel's solution was, again, direct action and The General Strike. The challenge for Sorel was to get the masses organized in a massive violent strike which he thought would strike fear in the establishment and lead to reform and, as he viewed the situtation, a "purer" society. Sorel viewed social reform as useless and undermined "true" justice. While Sorel's schemes would result in violence, he thought such violence would galvanize workers who could claim the dead were "martyrs to the cause." In other words, Sorel wanted revolutionary violence rather than reforms and attempted corrections to inequalities. Sorel thought that working class people were the actual producers of wealth and that they should engage in violence as The Ethics of Producers.Sorel had a concluding section in praise of Lenin (1870-1924) and the Bolsheviks. Sorel misunderstood the Russian Bolsheviks (the Communists). Voline wrote a book titled THE UNKNOWN REVOLUTION in which Voline cited "chapter and verse" re the Bolsheviks' terror against worker movemnets. As Trotsky (1888-1940) wrote, "We will shoot them like birds." Had Sorel lived at the time of Stalin's mass concerntration camp state, Sorel may have changed his views re the Bolsheviks.Sorel's showed insight in this book. Yet, Sorel was not a good student of politics and history. 6,000 years of history undermined Sorel's book. Radicals have often been absorbed by established political power. Political leaders often "change hats" to suit the political system. Sorel should have realized Aristotle's (384 BC-322 BC) remark that politics is the art of compromise. Sorel should have also realized that working class people are more concerned about improved wages and working conditions rather than violence and martyrdom. A question that Sorel never considered is what would happen if the General Strike acutally worked. New elites would get power with the same political temptations as the previous regime.James E. I would love to critique the work itself, but the text is so poorly transliterated obviously incorrect words are substituted in almost every sentence. There are frequent gems such as "poHitical," instead of political "axe," instead of are. Moreover, the text is so cramped one portion of the text is indiscernible from the rest at a glance. It is not at all evident where one letter, or segment begins and another ends. This is probably the poorest Kindle text I have ever had the displeasure of reading.

This one is about Coco, the soft-spoken, seemingly shy member of the group, and what happens when she decides to throw off the expectations she's lived with her whole life. I love how Coco's romantic relationship developed—it all rang so true—and the gently whispered idea of platonic girl friendships being the most important ones above all. It was so comforting. It made me feel sad and happy and reflective and cozy all at once.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. WILL COCO BREAK BAD? By gayle pace Coco has just seen her boyfriend cheating on her. She has always been the goody goody and she has come to the conclusion it's time for a change. It's time to be BAD. The book is a page turner. It reminds the reader of when they were that age. You could have been Coco. The author, Ms. Burgess writes the story so well that you become part of the Brooklyn Girls. Of the five young girls that live in Rookhaven, Coco is very insecure. She has always been protected from the world. Coco's answer to her problems is to bake and read a book. Coco doesn't know where her life is headed. She's lost. She's unhappy with everything and everyone. Everyone seems to have a goal except her. The only thing Coco knows is that she is very unhappy. Coco has never made decisions for herself and followed through with them. Instead she has done what her father and older sister, Julia has told her to do. Not for a very happy life at all. Will the day come when Coco will break free and be what she really wants to be? It would be great to see Coco become a strong, independent woman. Breaking Bad as they say. The author not only led you through Coco's life but the lives of her room mates, Pia, Maddie, Angie and Julia. Ms. Burgess wrote a valuable lesson into the book, SELF LOVE. You have to love yourself before others can love you. Just as long as you don't take it too far. This book is such a reality check. Think back when you were in your late teens and early twenties. You ruled the world or at least you thought so. No one in this life is perfect. We all have flaws and we all make mistakes. That doesn't mean you're not a good person. You've got to be yourself, otherwise you'll live a life of unhappiness. This is a book about the modern lives of some girls who are trying to make it, being themselves. This book will keep you turning the pages wanting to find out how Coco fairs in this modern world. Will she BREAK BAD? or will she sink deeper into her shell? Can't wait for the next book. I received a complimentary copy of THE WILD ONE from the author, Gemma Burgess and NightOwl Reviews for my unbiased review of the book. No other compensation took place.

It's not that I've ever experienced any of what Coco has, which probably has you wondering why I would relate so strongly to this book, but there's something about her and how she views herself that really resonated with me. I really felt like I was able to not only see Coco's life, and be a part of it, but understand what her perspective was and where it was coming from.Coco is the youngest of five females living in a Brooklyn brownstone, Rookhaven, that she inherited from her mother whom she lost at a very young age. Coco is the most sheltered and most insecure of all the women. While the other females have their foibles, Coco usually deals with stress by baking and reading. However Coco isn't happy, with her life, or with her job, and she's beginning to feel overwhelmed by the fact she doesn't know what direction her life is going to take when it seems everyone around her has a goal and plan. They all seem to be going somewhere and doing something they love. All Coco knows is that what she has in not what she wants.I really loved Coco. I've loved her from the moment I met her for the first time in Brooklyn Girls, the first book in the Brooklyn Girls series. Coco has always been the most introverted of the girls in the house and she's also been the one most sheltered. She's always done what her father and older sister Julia have told her was best for her; She's always taken the path of least resistance. I loved seeing her come out of her shell and taking control of her life. Granted she decided to the opposite of what she normally would have and be a stronger version of herself, which worked for a time, but it was great seeing her do that. I liked how Coco was discovering what she liked and what she wanted to do in all things, not just her romantic life but also her occupation.Another thing about this book that I really enjoyed was how the story focused on Coco, but also how her other housemates played pivotal roles in the book. It was like getting Coco's book and updates in Pia, Maddie, Angie, and Julia's lives as well. I loved seeing how they were doing in their lives, both the positives and negatives. There were times when I was taken aback by what was going on in their lives, but I also surprised myself by how nonjudgmental I was about the choices the girls made. This book focused on a number of themes, one of which was self love. Another was about making the change in your life that you want and being happy. Yet a third was about acceptance and being non judgmental. While I would've enjoyed a story that was all neat and nice, fitting the romance mold, instead I enjoyed a book that was true to life and real. Life isn't neat and perfect, and neither are the lives of those who live in Rookhaven. There's so much more I want to say, but this is truly a book that has to be read to be experienced. I feel like every high school girl and college going girl should read this for inspiration and confidence. Even when I was worried Coco was going to revert back into her shell, she surprised me. I think she and this book will surprise you too. Kudos to Gemma Burgess for writing a story that may seem light from the outside, but is packed with depth. This is not just a romance, but about a journey of self discovery, resilience, and strength. She touches on subjects relevant to young women today in such a way that promotes understanding and discourse. There are some hilarious laugh out loud moments and moments where you may find yourself in tears. I find myself looking forward to Julia's book and finding out what's going on in her life and in the lives of all those who reside in Rookhaven. I hope it's as spectacular as this book.

By Anonymous An African American ballerina takes a job at an elite boarding school only to find that the pristine campus contains just as much intrigue as the world of professional ballet: from aspiring dancers who will do anything to stand out to a dead body found in the campus lake, the school is full of mysteries on the brink of unraveling and characters who are not what they seem.A gripping thriller populated by realistic characters that draw you in and keep you guessing, Dark Turns is a must-read. Holahan has crafted a believable world that is as idyllic as it is dangerous, and you'll find it's hard to put the book down! I definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a great read (although you may want to clear you schedule first!).

A Boarding School/Ballet Murder Mystery/Romance By Monique Atgood This is a murder mystery about ballet students and professionals written by someone who has both a masterful encyclopedic knowledge of ballet and clearly in every scene in the book bursts forth her shining love for the art of ballet dance. It's fun to read a book when the author really cares about the subject.SYNOPSIS: It is set in a private boarding school. The school produces professional dancers somewhat like public universities produce professional football players. They are the pride and source of alumni donations, and are literally treated like 'prima donnas'. Nia Washington is a young professional dancer, nursing a broken heart and an sidelining injury, who takes a temporary job as a RA and a teaching assistant in dance. . On her very first day, she discovers a murder victim. The mystery unravels between students, revenge, secrets and a sweet romance with a fellow RA.What I liked: The dance imagery and infighting was so detailed I felt I knew the characters and could predict who would be a witch to whom. The sweet romance between the two RAs was cute. The writing was paced, the clues were liberally sprinkled throughout the story, and honestly, I just enjoyed the read so much I slowed down to savor it.What I didn't like: I thought Nia was way too easy. She had gone a year without any 'loving' then jumps in the sack with zero to little reasons/needs and she didn't equate sex with love. I also did not like her moral ambiguity. She gave no more thought to a grief stricken student's tearful confession than she gave to her breakfast. She did not empathize at all.IMO: (SMALL SPOILER) I liked and didn't like aspects of the book. One of the students has an abortion, which while it is a literary device to explain why she didn't come forward to be an alibi for the accused murderer, was glossed over, and no further medical or counseling was procured for the teenager. The main concern was how the child losing weight was effecting her dance and how it would affect the schools reputation and ability to solicit donations from alumni. However, the writer did such a good job that I, the reader found myself indignant and angry at both what this fictional character did, and how she was treated. So the book is well written with flawed selfish people. Oh and it has a good twist at the end. I was given an arc copy for a review.Technical note: the school is a non-denominational religious one, all students and staff would be required to attend chapel and they would have bitterly complained about it. It would have been nice to see a scene or two with the reluctant attendees in chapel services.

I could not make up my mind on whether I liked their relationship or not By Charlotte Lynn I saw it coming… I wanted to be wrong…The book started with a murder of a teenage girl. I was enthralled. The who done it part of the story kept me reading. I knew who did it, I kept guessing, I hoped I was wrong. The drama was to be expected in a book of teenagers who lived together 24/7, studying together, going to class together, and being in competition with each other for everything. What surprised me are the adults. I could not believe how clueless they were. How could they not see what was happening in front of them. Nia was the one that saw the most. Yet, she did not tell. She kept secrets until forced to tell them. I was interested in her relationship with Jeremy. I could not make up my mind on whether I liked their relationship or not. I am still unsure, but I know now what their relationship really was.Dark Turns takes the reader into the mind of a murderer. I loved every page. I recommend checking out the book.
