“If you think fiction can’t change your life and challenge you to be a better person, you need to read The Five Times I Met Myself.”

—Andy Andrews, New York Times bestselling author of How Do You Kill 11 Million People, The Noticer & The Traveler’s Gift

What if you met your twenty-three-year-old self in a dream? What would you say?

Brock Matthews’ once promising life is unraveling. His coffee company. His marriage.

So when he discovers his vivid dreams—where he encounters his younger self—might let him change his past mistakes, he jumps at the chance. The results are astonishing, but also disturbing.

Because getting what Brock wants most in the world will force him to give up the one thing he doesn’t know how to let go . . . and his greatest fear is that it’s already too late.

“A powerfully redemptive story with twists and turns that had me glued to every page. With a compelling message for anyone who longs to relive their past, The Five Times I Met Myself is another James L. Rubart masterpiece.”

—Susan May Warren, bestselling author of the Christiansen Family series

Rubart is a novel that asks the questions: "What would you say if you met your younger self?" "What past mistakes would you fix?" "What wrongs would you right?"Brock Matthews is faced with these questions when, in a spin on time travelling, he meets his younger self in his dreams. His life is falling apart at the seams so when he finds he can alter it through dreaming, he goes for it.I was intrigued by the premise of the book, but what I liked least about the book was what I had expected I would appreciate the most -- the "Christian" element. The expert in this novel is Dr. Shagull -- a mentor and help to the main character. Dr. Shagull states: "God isn't a name any more than president is a name. It refers to a position only." He then goes on to describe Christ as "The most brilliant man who ever lived." After Brock shows his confusion at Christ being called a man, Dr. Shagull says: "I suppose that comes with being God and all." Dr. Shagull speaking in unclear riddles was tiresome. He does it again later in the book when talking about whether or not Brock is in control of his dreams. Most disturbing of all is Dr. Shagull's use of the Trinity to describe time travel. He draws a three circle Venn Diagram on a page and says of the middle: "I believe this is not only where past, present, and future meet, it's also the place where the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit intersect. They are separate, yet One." He goes on to say "If you can believe that this truth is real, ... then you can believe they can take you to a place outside of time where you can communicate with your younger self."I would have preferred if Dr. Shagull and his "Christian" references were left out of the book all together. His view on the Trinity's 'intersecting place' is not one that is Biblical in my opinion. The Grace to You website states:"The Bible is clear. There is only one God,yet He exists, and always has existed,as a Trinity of Persons-- the Father, the Son, and the Spirit."So, while I was intrigued with the time travelling tale of Brock Matthews, I was troubled by the spiritual references. I feel like the moral of the story and the themes of love, forgiveness, and the importance of family would have been stronger if it weren't for these unnecessary and unBiblical detours.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. By Stephanie Ward 'The Five Times I Met Myself' is an intriguing novel that will make the reader sit back and think about the topics discussed throughout. The author was able to combine a terrific time travel story along with heavy ideas such as fate, destiny, regret, and the consequence of one's actions. With all of the deep issues the main character - Brock - must face, you might assume that this book would be dry and somewhat boring. However, the story is quite the opposite - I found it to be a fun time travel novel with a great main character, an original plot, and thought-provoking questions. I've never really stopped to think about what I might do if I found myself in Brock's situation - and reading this novel did just that. I was completely fascinated by the concept of time travel and how it might change someone's life, but I was also intrigued by the many questions it brought to light and how I would face each one. The author did a wonderful job at mixing a fun time travel story together with some deep topics to make the reader sit back and think - and he did so without it being boring. That, in my opinion, shows the author's unique storytelling abilities along with the obvious talent present. I definitely recommend this book for fans of time travel fiction, as well as readers who enjoy science fiction, fantasy, and thought-provoking novels that play with your mind long after you've finished.Disclosure: I received a copy of the book through the BookLook Bloggers Program in exchange for an honest review.

I might have figured out the important thins later in life that I wanted to, but I’ve got ‘em in my back pocket now.” (p.315)“It is truly an amazing thing to fully surrender to the living God.” (p. 377)James Rubart leads readers to these truths as only he can lead as a writer. He uses the concept of Lucid Dreaming as a vehicle to deliver a life changing tale! Truly, this story may center around Brock Matthews and his falling apart life, but by the time you reach the end of the story, you will understand a far deeper and greater truth about a life that pleases God. About the freedom that comes when we surrender our lives to our Creator and break free from the thought that life is just the sum total of our good and bad choices. Freedom comes with surrender, and that is what Brock Matthews learns as he journeys back and forth between present reality and the lucidity of dreams that focus on past choices.I don’t think there is a person alive that wouldn’t change some of their life choices if given an opportunity to view the outcome through the lens of long term consequences. But the truth is, even if we make bad choices and face unpleasant circumstance as a result of those choices, God can still redeem our lives in significant ways that brings us good and Him glory. This IS a story of redemption in its truest sense! The vehicle of the delivery of this truth may seem a bit fanstastical, but in its context, it echoes a reality that we each face at some point in our lives. My most honest response? AMEN!! And AMEN!! And AMEN!! I’ve lived this redemption out in my own life very recently, and, once again, God’s timing with this story is so much more than amazing!! ENJOY!!

Chase sat back in his chair at the Lucky Lady Saloon in Fool's Fortune, Colorado, letting the three-hundred-dollar-a-bottle whiskey and the lilting sound of Sadie Lovely's voice wash over him.Today marked the anniversary of his obligation to his grandfather's will. In order to inherit all of what his grandfather left him, he had to agree to live at the Lucky Lady Ranch for two entire years without leaving for more than one month out of each year. Finally, he was free to choose wherever he wanted to go, whatever he wanted to do and whomever he wanted to do it with. But he wasn't really. In the past two weeks, he'd gone from anticipating leaving the ranch to his overseer to promising to stay until things settled down with Sadie.Fifteen years older than him, she was a friend from his former playboy life, really an acquaintance who'd saved him from being mugged by thugs and drowning in a gutter when he'd been too drunk and stupid to help himself.Tough as nails, with a heart of gold, Sadie had held off the thugs with a .40-caliber pistol she kept strapped to her thigh beneath her evening dress. She'd dragged him into her home, sobered him up and asked for nothing in return. He'd offered her his friendship, and even got to know her grandson, Jake, a cute little boy with curious green eyes. He wasn't sure what had happened to cause Jake's mother to crash her car, hadn't asked and Sadie hadn't volunteered the information. It was clear she was raising the boy to the best of her ability. When she'd come to him two weeks ago, scared and in need of his help, he'd opened his doors to her, set her up with a job at one of the businesses he'd inherited from his grandfather and helped her move her and her grandson into his big empty house on the Lucky Lady Ranch until she could get set up in a place of her own.Sadie ended her song and descended from the stage to sit in the chair opposite Chase. In her late forties, she was still an attractive woman, with smooth curves and a sultry smile. "I'm glad you came."Chase sat forward, the mild buzz from the alcohol clearing as he leaned forward. "I came as soon as I got your message. I must say I'm surprised you agreed to perform tonight."She shrugged. "I never know when a threat is real or just a threat. All I know is that I can't live my life like this. I have to work to support my grandson. Speaking of which." She bit her lip, the lines around her eyes more pronounced than usual. "I want to make sure you're still good for my backup should anything happen to me where Jake's concerned.""I'm his godfather now. I'd do anything for the kid."She reached across the table and touched his arm. "Even raise him as your own?" Sadie held his gaze.Chase's chest tightened. "That won't be an issue. He's got you.""I'm serious. I have a bad feeling.""We moved you from Leadville to give you a new start. Hopefully, whoever burned down your house won't follow you here. You should be okay."She smiled. "I have a limited number of skills. Changing my name and hair color hardly constitutes going incognito when all I'm qualified to do is sing and…"Chase covered her hand. "Look, Sadie, you're done with that other life. You don't have to go back to entertaining men. You have a good job here, where all you have to do is sing for a living." Though he subsidized her earnings, he wasn't telling her. He owed her his life. She nodded. "Thanks to you. I'm just afraid my past is catching up to me.""Why? What has you scared?""I had another empty message on my voice mail. On my new cell phone." She bit her bottom lip."It was a computer-generated sales call gone bad." Chase shook his head. "What else do you have?""I feel like someone is following me. Watching me." She turned her head and stared out at the practically empty barroom. "Especially today. Every time I turned around I saw nothing, yet I can swear someone is there. Waiting. Watching.""Sweetheart, after having a stalker following you around for the past few weeks, you have a right to feel paranoid."She pulled her hand away from his. "It's more than that. When I left my dressing room earlier, I locked the door behind me. I went back because I forgot my throat spray. The door was open. I know I locked it.""Perhaps the janitor?""He doesn't come on until after midnight."Chase's anger simmered just beneath the surface.Sadie was his friend and he hated seeing her so distraught. "I placed a call to a man I know of who provides specialized, undercover bodyguards. I asked specifically for a woman to blend in with you and the saloon."Tears welled in Sadie's eyes. "A bodyguard?" Then she shook her head. "I can't pay you back. Not yet.""No need. I don't like the idea of you and Jake in danger. At least you'll be safe at the ranch until you find a place of your own. And hopefully, we'll discover who's stalking you and nail the jerk before you move back to town into your own place."She smiled. "In the meantime, I need to know that you'll be there for Jake, if anything happens to me. You're the only one he trusts besides me and the Quaids." She leaned closer to him. "Chase?""Yes, Sadie?""If anything should happen to me, I want you to have this." She pressed something cold and hard into his palm and curled his fingers around it."What is it?" He could tell by the shape, it was a key, but to what?"It's the key to my safe-deposit box at the First Colorado Bank in Denver. You, me and my attorney are the only ones who have access to the box. He has authority to turn it over to the police should you and I disappear.""Which you aren't, and I'm not," he assured her.Sadie took a deep breath. "I'm sorry I haven't told you everything about me. The safe-deposit box has information in it that would explain a lot. I can't say that I've lived a perfect life. Far from it. Basically, it's a compilation of my secrets and Melissa's, Jake's mother."Chase snorted. "As if I would be the one to judge."Sadie gave him one of her gentle smiles. "You've changed in the past two years, Chase." Her forehead crinkled. "I'm glad you're not drinking as heavily, but I think you've lost some of your fire."It was his turn to smile at her. "The last time you gave me advice, I slowed down. Are you telling me I slowed down too much?""You did the right thing. You were on a suicidal path. Your grandfather's will was just the ticket to get you back on track, not me.""I wouldn't have come back to Fool's Fortune if it hadn't been for you."Her mouth twisted. "Sure you would have, if for nothing else but to spit on your grandfather's grave for the way he disinherited your mother.""My parents might still be here if he hadn't been so hard on my mother."Sadie clucked her tongue. "You don't know that.""Well, they wouldn't have been living in New York City. My mother never liked living anywhere else but Colorado.""That's the past. As a wise man once said to me, you have to let go of your past to live in the present or you will have no future."Chase sat across the table from Sadie, the woman who, despite her former trade, reminded him of the mother he'd lost six years ago. He pocketed the key, determined to guard Sadie's secrets. "Thanks, Sadie. Rest assured. I'll take care of Jake if anything happens to you."She nodded. "That's all I ask.""Now let me take you home.""I drove my car here. I can drive it home." She pushed to her feet, a tired smile curving her lips. "I should be okay."Chase shook his head. "I won't take no for an answer."He, too, rose from his seat. "Besides, I'd like the company on the drive back to the ranch.""Are you sure you don't mind that Jake and I are staying with you at the ranch?""The house is too big for just me and the Quaids." With a smile, Chase added, "Jake should be sound asleep by now. Knowing Frances, she's plied him with homemade cookies and read him several books by now. Probably let him stay up late, despite his nine o'clock bedtime."Sadie's lips twisted. "I'd be angry at her, but she's so good with Jake and he adores her. The poor boy needs a mother.""He's got you.""And I love him with all my heart. Too bad Melissa didn't live to watch him grow into a man. Hard to believe she's been dead almost six months.""Still hurts, doesn't it?" Chase slipped an arm around the older woman and hugged her to him as they walked to the little room behind the stage where Sadie had left her faux fur jacket hanging on a coat rack.Sadie stopped in front of the coat rack and waited for Chase to gather her coat and hold it out to her. As she slipped her arms into the sleeves, she said, "A mother should never have to bury her own child."Jake let his hands rest on Sadie's shoulders for just a moment. "You never told me what happened to Melissa.""She ran her car over the side of a cliff. The police ruled it an accident, but the people who knew her said she'd been acting funny, almost paranoid."Jake shrugged into his coat, his eyes narrowing. "Do you think she committed suicide?""I wouldn't put it past her. But then, she exacerbated her problems by continuing to put herself front and center of trouble." Sadie's shoulders sagged, making her appear every bit of her forty-something years. "I should have spent more time with her when she was a teen.""If she was like every other teen, she wouldn't have wanted you around.""You don't have any kids scattered across the country, do you?" Sadie pinned him with her stare. "You were the wild one for a while there.""No, I was sure to protect the women I'd been with…and any child that might have resulted, from getting a father he couldn't count on." Fishing his keys from his pocket he held the door for Sadie. She touched his cheek as she stepped through the door. "You would make a good father.""I don't know why you think that. My father was never home. He and my mother never settled for long."Sadie smiled. "I know because I can see what a good man you are."Chase led the way out the back door and around the side of the building onto Main Street. The wind had picked up, sending a chilling blast from the snowcapped peaks surrounding them down to the streets. Bowing his shoulders, Chase did his best to block the wind from Sadie as they crossed Main Street, their feet making sharp clicking sounds on the icy pavement."When are you going to find yourself a woman to share your life with?" Sadie asked."Again, my parents weren't the best advertisement for marriage. I'm not the least in a hurry to find a woman to settle down with. I like my solitude and I'm beginning to like the seclusion of the Lucky Lady Ranch."At the middle of the street headlights shined in Chase's eyes. He lifted his hand to block the brilliant glare blinding him. "We'd better hurry." Chase gripped Sadie's arm and guided her toward the other side of the street. Before they reached the sidewalk, tires squealed and the vehicle sped up, aiming directly for them."Run!" Chase shouted, shoving Sadie toward the sidewalk, then he turned to face the oncoming vehicle.Katherine Rivers blinked tired eyes as she entered the outskirts of Fool's Fortune, the quaint Colorado town in the middle of the Rockies. It was well past eleven o'clock, Texas time, and she'd been on the road since four that morning. All she wanted was to get to the Lucky Lady Saloon, find a bed to crawl into and save the introductions to her new assignment, Chase Marsden, until after she'd had a decent night's sleep. She wasn't even due in until tomorrow. Surely a good night's sleep would boost her spirits and set her on the right path with this new job and her first CCI assignment. The streets, cheerfully decorated in bright Christmas lights, were pretty much deserted with the occasional car passing. Small town life would suit her fine after the insanity of Houston traffic and crime. Her GPS indicated she was two blocks from the saloon on Main Street. She could see the neon lights of a building ahead and presumed it was her destination. Two shadowy figures emerged from the entrance and started across the street. Good. Maybe the place would be empty and she wouldn't have to speak to anyone but the desk clerk. Her back ached and the scar on her belly twinged at the enforced inactivity of driving across Texas and New Mexico all day. She needed to move, to perform the stretching exercises the physical therapist had armed her with after her surgery. She snorted. A broken-down Texas Ranger, medically retired after a shoot-out gone wrong. Some bodyguard she'd be.Faced with finding a job sitting behind a desk, Kate had been more than happy to accept Hank Derringer's offer of employment in his supersecret organization, Covert Cowboys, Inc. Although, being female, she wasn't sure how that worked. Technically, she was a cowgirl, born and raised in the panhandle of Texas on a four-thousand-acre ranch. She knew her way around horses, cattle and a barnyard. The fourth daughter of a rancher, she had never felt she was a disappointment to her father, who would probably have preferred sons to carry on the Rivers name. Her father treated her like any other ranch hand, only with a whole lot of love and care. She could ride as well or better than any man on the ranch and she'd done her share of roping, branding and castrating steers. Her sisters had preferred to work in the house, but knew how to ride and feed the animals. Her father boasted she was as good or better than any son he might have had and he wouldn't have changed a thing. When she left the ranch to join the Texas Rangers, Kate Rivers wasn't afraid of anything. All that had changed in one night, one fateful shootout.Resisting the urge to floor her accelerator and finish this trip, Kate pushed away thoughts of that night eight months ago and maintained her speed, her goal in sight.A dark SUV darted out in front of her from a side street.Kate slammed her foot on the brake pedal and skidded to a halt.

By ButtonsMom2003 Chase Marsden, former playboy, now lives on the ranch he inherited from his grandfather. He had to spend 2 years there in order to inherit but now he loves living there. He’s befriended Sadie Lovely, a women with a past who is 15 years older, and credits her with helping him pull his life together. Sadie’s daughter died recently and she is now raising her grandson, Jake. Strange “accidents” have been happening to Sadie and Jake so Chase has hired Covert Cowboys Inc. to help provide protection for Sadie and Jake until they can figure out what’s going on.Kate Rivers is a former Texas Ranger, hurt on the job and medically retired. Now working for CCI, she has been sent her to provide the protection Chase requested for Sadie. She arrives in town just in time to witness a car running down Chase and Sadie. Chase has Kate come stay at his ranch while Sadie is in the hospital so she can help protect Jake. Chase is unaware of what happened when Kate was injured and doesn’t know why she can’t be around kids. This story held my interest right from the beginning. Kate and Chase are attracted to each other but things don’t really escalate too quickly. As they learn more about each other Kate finally trusts Chase enough to tell him her secret and he opens up about his former playboy lifestyle. There’s a lot of mystery and suspense in this story and there are plenty of suspects to choose from. The mark of s good mystery is not being able to figure out whodunit to early on and I didn’t guess the right one at all – which was great! I thought the story unfolded at a nice pace, not too fast and not too slow.Although this book is part of the Cover Cowboys Inc. series you don’t need to have read any of the other ones to enjoy this book. If you’ve been reading the series you will be happy that characters from earlier books make brief appearances in this one.Books by Elle James always provide me with an enjoyable escape and this one was a great way to spend a few hours away from my normal life. :-)I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This one is filled with intrigue from the very first chapter until the last.Billionaire rancher Chase Marsden is determined to help his old friend Sadie Lovely when she comes to him saying that she thinks someone is following her. He hires a bodyguard from Covert Cowboys, Inc. to come and protect her.Kate Rivers is a former Texas Ranger, now taking on her first job as a private bodyguard. Just as she arrives into town, an attempt is made on Sadie's life. She and Chase team up to try to track down who is behind it. During their investigation, they find Sadie's notorious black book naming some high up political figures from when she was a Madam. Will Chase & Kate decide to act on the attraction they are feeling for each other? By EclecticReader Take an emotionally and physically damaged female former Texas Ranger, add a handsome, wealthy playboy rancher, stir in a friend with a questionable past and a suspicious “accident,” and watch it simmer to a near-boil. Elle James has put together a creative story line and develops plot twists to keep you guessing about who – or what – is the threat to whom. At the same time, clear chemistry ignites between the lady and the rancher, tempered by some ethical restraint on both their parts. Ms. James holds your interest as the tension builds between them. My only wish might have been that the “whodunit” resolution didn’t play out quite so neatly, but it detracts only slightly from the very satisfying love story and well-developed main characters. I’ve only read three Elle James novels thus far (and only this one in the Covert Cowboys, Inc. series), but she very capably delivers a broad variety of narratives. I’m hooked!

Spanning the 20th century, the story of Roses takes place in a small East Texas town against the backdrop of the powerful timber and cotton industries, industries controlled by the scions of the town's founding families. Cotton tycoon Mary Toliver and timber magnate Percy Warwick should have married but unwisely did not, and now must deal with the deceit, secrets, and tragedies of their choice and the loss of what might have been--not just for themselves but for their children, and children's children. With expert, unabashed, big-canvas storytelling, Roses covers a hundred years, three generations of Texans and the explosive combination of passion for work and longing for love.

From Publishers Weekly This enthralling stunner, a good old-fashioned read, may herald the overdue return of those delicious doorstop epics from such writers as Barbara Taylor Bradford and Colleen McCullough. Meacham's multigenerational family saga, set in East Texas circa 1914–1985, charts the transformation of Mary Toliver, a wide-eyed 16-year-old heiress, into a calculating cotton plantation queen as hardheaded as Scarlett O'Hara. Her brother, Miles, goes off to WWI, returns home, but then goes back to France to marry Marietta, a French Communist, leaving Mary to deal with their plantation, Somerset, and Darla, their alcoholic mother (who later hangs herself ). Many years later, Mary, now an elderly, terminally ill widow, resolves to defeat the Toliver Curse and regrets selling her soul for Somerset and giving up her true love, Percy Warwick, the father of their secret child, to marry their friend Ollie DuMont, who helped her save Somerset when Percy refused. Meacham uses three well-balanced viewpoints: Mary's, Percy's and Rachel's, Mary's great-niece, who must confront Percy when she discovers some disquieting family information after Mary dies. A refreshingly nostalgic bouquet of family angst, undying love and if onlys. (Jan.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist At the beginning of the twentieth century, the small east Texas town of Howbutker is run by two families. The Tolivers preside over the massive cotton plantation of Somerset, while the Warwicks possess acres upon acres of timber. The children of the families, pretty and stubborn Mary Toliver and suave, strong Percy Warwick, are like water and oil. Percy insists that Mary will eventually marry him, and Mary is adamant that she will never have room in her heart for anything but Somerset, yet their undeniable attraction pulls them together. Through a trick of fate, Percy and Mary are forced apart. The consequences of their separation vibrate throughout the years, giving rise to lies, deceit, secrets, and tragedies that their families must suffer through, until, ultimately, they just have to leave it to Percy, Mary, and plain fate to see if they can make things right in the end. First-time novelist Meacham’s sweeping, century-encompassing, multigenerational epic is reminiscent of the film Giant, and as large, romantic, and American a tale as Texas itself. --Hilary Hatton

Review "Roses heralded as new Gone with the Wind." (USA Today)"As large, romantic, and American a tale as Texas itself." (Booklist)"An enthralling stunner....A compelling saga with echoes of Gone with the Wind." (Publishers Weekly)"It's been almost 30 years since the heyday of giant epics...but Meacham's debut might bring them back. Readers who like an old-fashioned saga will devour this sprawling novel of passion and revenge." (Library Journal)

Harris Spanning three generations and nearly a century, Leila Meacham's "Roses" is a throwback to epic storytelling in the vein of Edna Ferber, Margaret Mitchell, or Colleen McCullough. The book advertising, itself, makes the comparison to "The Thorn Birds" and those are pretty lofty expectations to set as McCollough's "The Thorn Birds" has endured as one of the most beloved romance sagas of its day. In truth, I don't think "Roses" is the next classic in that vein--but I do believe there is a lot to recommend this sprawling tale of forbidden love and family betrayal. In a small East Texas town, three families of enormous wealth and power come to reside. The Tolivers are cotton tycoons, the Warwicks are lumber barons, and the DuMonts are retail magnates. The mutual respect formed between these elite families set up a social structure that will have long lasting repercussions through the generations for all their progeny. At the heart of "Roses" is Mary Toliver, a heroine we follow for 80 plus years. Stubborn and single-minded, Mary is a terrific and maddening character--epitomizing the strong-willed matriarch necessary for just such a tale. Her male counterpoint is Percy Warwick, a perfect foil and the love of Mary's life. Of course, these two are made for each other--and of course, they can never truly realize happiness in each other's arms. Their grand romance is played through the decades with enormous vigor, and their dance together is filled with small moments of joy but mostly great tragedy. The first two-thirds of Meacham's tale is terrifically engaging. Fast paced and fun, I was whole-heartedly invested in the Mary and Percy story and all the subplots in the periphery. Galloping through the years, the ill-fated romance stays center stage even as both parties move off into new directions. I enjoyed the characters and even as they created a new generation, that still remained a part of the main story line. However, all good things must come to an end--and ultimately, for me, the book loses momentum for its final third. Concerning itself with Mary's potential heir, Rachel Toliver (the third generation and Mary's double in both spirit and dedication to the family business to the exclusion of everything else), the story lacks some of the pizzazz that it had previously showcased. Still a solid conclusion, it just didn't captivate me in the way Mary's story had--so there was a bit of a fizzle instead of a crescendo.I really recommend "Roses" to fans of the genre. Ultimately, I'm probably not the book's intended audience but I like to dabble in soapy sagas every once in a while. And, I found most of "Roses" to be entertaining and involving. I genuinely cared for the characters of Mary and Percy, and if you're going to follow a family saga through the decades--that's got to be a positive!

The author had the makings of a great book here with a promising plot line and what could have been great characters. Unfortunately, especially in the first half of the book involving Mary and Percy, the characterizations are uneven and undeveloped, and the motivations and actions don't make sense. The second half of the book, involving Mary's granddaughter Rachel, is somewhat better in these regards, or maybe I just got used to the author's writing and filled in the blanks for myself. I was astounded to read that Ms. Meacham was a former English teacher, as her use of similes and metaphors is strained and off-putting, and her failure to correctly provide an antecedent for her many pronouns is rampant. Further, some of her sudden leaps in place and time can be pretty confusing, as they are indicated by nothing at all other than all of a sudden someone else is speaking or the action is taking place somewhere unrelated to what came immediately before. Maybe these missteps were present because I was reading an ARC, and they will be corrected in the final version of the book. I can only hope so, both for Ms. Meacham's sake and the sake of her future readers. A good editor would have been a godsend for this version that I received. All that said, I was held by the storyline and the suspense until the last page, and I was never tempted to put the book down and not finish it. I think Ms. Meacham does capture the ambiance of small-town Texas (I grew up in a small town in West Texas myself) and it's entirely believable that there were two or three "ruling" families with immense wealth and property and also great respect from the town. She reveals the secrets of these families in a convincing manner and maintains plenty of suspense along the way. My earlier comments about characterization refer primarily to the fact that the actions of the characters are not sufficiently explained by what we've come to know and understand about them. For example, Mary's willingness to accept the vagaries of fate and not fight for true love does not square with her stubbornness about holding on to Somerset regardless of the consequences. Also, Mary's realistic and straightforward approach to the farm and life in general doesn't lend much credence to her devastating actions taken because of belief in a family curse. Of course, people are complicated and do have blind spots, but somehow the most critical step Mary takes is never justified at all by anything we've come to know about her. And Rachel's final decision regarding her law suit is never explained at all. I've tried to avoid any spoilers in the preceding but I felt that I needed to justify my own statements by giving a few examples.I also think some family genealogy charts would have been helpful to remember who's in what generation and their relation to the rest of the family.I hope the final published version of this book will have taken care of all my misgivings, and with that in mind, I recommend this book to anyone who likes a multi-generational tale of passion, suspense, and tragedy.

I was totally enthralled with Mary's life and what had happened to lead up to the opening moments in the first chapter. The book sets the stage for flashbacks and the is divided into three parts: Mary's Story, another main character's story (no spoilers from me!) and then the present when everything wraps up. Even though I knew how Mary's life had ended up, I was so captivated by her and the other characters that I kept hoping that she would make different decisions, change her life, etc. This book was a wonderful guilty pleasure....kind of like 'The Thorn Birds" lite.I did think that the third section dragged a bit. Maybe because I was so wrapped up in the past and Mary's life, I did not care as much about her great-niece Rachel, or maybe I was just tired. But things started to seem a bit redundant, especially the symbolism of the red and white roses. But all in all, I HIGHLY recommend this book!

Get your scrubs on, and don't forget your stethoscope. Welcome to the ER.

This book is not about life and death struggles. This book is the polar opposite. It is about the absolute, over-the-top insanity that I have witnessed during my time in the ER. This book is the untold, unseen, and unshared rants and raves of an ER nurse who has been slowly driven mad by his patients. I want you, the listener to step into my scrubs, see this bizarre world through my eyes, and understand that once you stop laughing in the ER, it's time to quit.

This book is the stupid stories that I still don't believe. It's the codes gone crazy. It's the "I can't believe you said that." It's a testament to everything an ER nurse puts up with on a day in and day out basis that most people don't know exists. It makes Scrubs, E.R., House, and all the other medical shows look like fairy tales.

As an ER nurse, I want to let the world know that when we pull that curtain and leave the room, we are laughing because let's face it, it's funny. Please don't listen to this book if you think you are going to hear about nursing at its finest. This is not Florence Nightingale's kind of nursing; this is the grit, spit, vomit and s#!t that comes with the job I love and hate so much.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely The Most Humorous ER Book By Linda C. Hackling I have a macabre sense of humor mostly so I enjoy real life situational humor as opposed to canned jokes or "schtick" humor. Seeing human foilables instead of hearing them does the job for me. It takes a lot to make me truly laugh out loud like a real belly laugh. This book, in many parts, had me laughing to the point I cried. Kudos to the author for his sense of humor especially in written form. My very best was the phlebotomy (Chapter 11) section; "you only get one shot at this." The analogy of going into a restaurant, ordering a steak & telling the chef he's only going to get one shot of this made me roar, even as I write this. (Maybe because I am a phlebotomist!). For those negative reviews out there....please, give me a break. Mr. Jacobs warned you in the forward & then said it best in stating if you don't or can't have a sense of humor in the profession he's in, then get out of medicine. The review that stated, "some things are better left unsaid" can't possibly understand the gruesomeness & man's inhumanity against man presented in the ER. You have to be "called" to this profession. Give the author a break. Trauma nurses & Dr.'s see things the average person cannot possibly comprehend. If they couldn't laugh, they'd end up in the psych ward !!! Thank God we have people such as these. If I were in a catastrophic medical situation & needed the Trauma personnel, I could only hope Mr. Jacobs or his clone, was attending me. Lighten up people, this is the real world & sometimes people say inappropriate things (see chapter in the book on intake info "Triage") which is frustrating. If you chose to ignore Mr. Jacob's warning in the beginning, you could have closed the book anytime. On a serious note, to those same nay-sayers, I understand. How could anyone laugh at someone's misfortune? But we don't have situations involving all 5 senses but they DO & more. When was the last time you were thrown up on, wiped an elderly pts. butt who is a complete stranger, seen the devastation of a shotgun blast, had to tell parents their child is dead, etc. on a constant basis? People in just about any profession or job, always talk about "stress" "burn out" & not making enough money. Many, many cops suffer from all 3 & their escape is "eating their gun. So I think these care givers are allowed some form of escape besides suicide. The alleviation of the first 2 are EXACTLY why the warriors in Trauma need a sense of humor & not making enough money?????" . In medicine, "Anesthesiologists, surgeons, orthopedic Dr.s & even podiatrists in private practice (and the list goes on) make much more than these people WITH REGULAR HOURS. My negative about this book? "The New Grad Nurse Guide" is the author's only other published book of which I know. Can't wait to start reading that !!!!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Really good! By AJ Swanson As someone who has a medical condition that often lands me in the ER I have a huge respect for the nurses working there. And even more so after seeing what they go through daily. Great book, well worth reading.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Quick read. Fun anectdotes. By Timothy W. Mccollum Helpful insights for those living on the patient side of the triage window. I will use this knowledge the next time I am bringing my son to the ED at the children's hospital.

When anyone is diagnosed with a long term, chronic, and debilitating disease such as Parkinson’s disease, it can be devastating. The uncertainty of the future can be extremely difficult to deal with. This book is meant to share one family’s experience with Parkinson’s. This book is not a medical treatise but rather a book filled with suggestions that will help the reader cope with the disease over a long period of time. The most important lesson I learned from having the disease for 26 years is to keep a positive mental attitude. This book also discusses deep brain stimulation surgery and how the surgery helped me. The book covers the whole 26 years my family has lived with Parkinson’s disease. Proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the Parkinson's Disease Foundation's research programs.

Not qualities you see in all new books and/or movies. I have had the privilege of knowing Dr. Zimmerman and his family when he discovered he had Parkinson's at a young age. And' the fear that ensued when he found the writings on this topic were very limited for younger men and women. And the results nearly always negative. As the book points out he took the disease as a challenge; and challenge it he did. And outstanding book on a tough subject. My hat is off to Bob and his family on the writing of this book.

Unlike most baby care books, this early child care guide by pediatrician and health communicator DR.PAUL Roumeliotis takes a unique approach by emphasizing what scientific advances have confirmed—that what happens early on in life affects one’s overall health decades down the road. He believes the first eighteen months of a child’s life can set their wellness path. Baby Comes Home begins by describing the vital changes that occur in a baby’s brain during the first eighteen months and explains why the early years are so important. It explores the new “Science of TLC,” which shows how tender, loving, and caring relationships with babies help to shape their brains positively. DR.PAUL presents important practical information on safety in the home and outdoors, baby routines and patterns, immunizations, injury prevention, nutrition, and growth and development milestones. The second half of this useful guide reviews common baby care issues and concerns as well as illnesses and conditions commonly seen during the first few years of life. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, daycare teacher, or child caregiver, this book is an excellent reference for your baby’s current and future health, wellness, and prosperity.

Review

Dr. Paul, an expert in pediatrics, has written a ground-breaking book about the importance of childhood/infant health in preventing illness and ensuring wellness later on in life. An accessible and valuable resource for doctors, psychiatrists, paramedics and parents around the world, this book should be used by organizations to further global initiatives relating to pediatric health on the international stage, the main specialized bodies of the United Nations, UNICEF and WHO in particular.  If you are one of the believers of my own quote on this very subject: "A SOUND MIND COULD ONLY BE FOUND IN A SOUND BODY", then I strongly recommend that you should carefully read and digest this innovative book by Dr. Paul accordingly.

I have to say that I didn't use the book yet, but I hope I will in the future, yet from reading it, its a very accessible book that doesn't talk down to caretakers and the information is simple and easy to understand. I loved how much detail and suggestions the author had for various problems that a baby will cause, or how the baby will turn life upside. I kind of do wish that the author would have covered the topic of pets and babies, as well as how to handle when a baby will pull a cat's or a doggie's tail and how to teach them early on not to do it. Other than that, whatever you might be looking for is right in there: nutrition, preparing for arrival, safety advice, babies growing up, diseases and their symptoms and treatments, Yes, one doesn't have to wade through hundreds and hundreds of pages just to find an answer to a simple question, but instead at one's fingertips there are 400 pages that are written in an easy to understand language along with an index and a very organized table of contents. This is for iRead Book Tours

It then explores the new "Science of TLC," that shows how tender, loving, and caring relationships with babies help to positively shape their brains. The book then presents important practical information on safety in the home and outdoors, baby routines/patterns, immunizations, injury prevention, nutrition, and more. To complete this useful guide, DR.PAUL also reviews common baby care issues and concerns as well as illnesses and conditions commonly seen during the first few years of life. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, daycare teacher or child caregiver, this book is an excellent reference resource for your baby's current and future health, wellness and prosperity. My Review: Having a baby is an arduous task, but as a mother of 6 children I am here to tell you that being pregnant is only half the battle. The part of the journey that is the hardest begins when you bring that tiny human home. It is a job and blessing met with a tender heart, a sleepy smile, and pure exhaustion like you have known in your entire life. Anything you could or want to know the author Dr. Paul Roumeliotis has covered within the 300 pages in Baby Comes Home. He gives you a brief summary on how to take general care of your baby all the way up to the age of 18 months. There is tons of very thought out and well researched information for young or first time parents. Vaccinations seem to be a hot topic these days and the doctor explains those as well. He also gives you information on the baby's soft spot and first bath. So as you can see it is lots of information whether it is the day to day tasks or more important health information. Dr. Paul Roumeliotis runs the gammit and gives you a lot of information to ingest when it comes to your baby. I think this would make a great baby shower gift!**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.

Baby Comes Home is pitched at those parents – most of us! – who really don’t have any idea what they’re doing when their child enters the world and need advice on everything from nappy changes to happy babies. With Dr Paul’s book, if you’ve got a question, you can be sure he’ll answer it!If taken at face value, the book can read somewhat like an instruction manual, completely stacked with advice, hints and tips to help ensure your child is fit and healthy. Naturally, there is a huge section on common medical conditions which your baby may develop and tons of helpful information to help the parent make wise choices. If you read it as I presume it’s meant to be written, a helpful guide to dip in and out of as needed, then it’s a treasure trove of wisdom and experience from a doctor who clearly knows an awful lot about the early moments in a baby’s life.He understands what the parent is feeling but strips away the emotion to make it clear and accessible. If you’re worrying about baby-proofing your house, he’s got advice on it. If you’re unsure about rashes or spots on your baby’s skin, you can find out what to do. If you have anxiety regarding developmental milestones, he’s got it covered.Just use the handy Contents and Index page and you’ll soon be clued up.He also backs up his points with understandable research and emphasises the need for due love and care throughout the baby’s formative weeks and months. It’s in some ways an obvious and totally natural point but it’s helpful and interesting to learn of the science behind the benefits of taking amazing care of your baby!In summary then, Dr Paul’s book is an epic manual for how to help your child grow safe, well and happy. Use it as you need and it will be invaluable.

The Montessori method revolutionized how children were educated. In Dr. Montessori's Own Handbook, Maria Montessori explains the basics of her system, how it works and why it works. There are dozens of figures to help illustrate her points. "My method is scientific, both in its substance and in its aim. It makes for the attainment of a more advanced stage of progress, in directions no longer only material and physiological."

It is NOT, however, a how to or instruction guide for Montessori. you won't gleen much about how to use things (other than one or maybe two basic functions) from this book. for that you need montessori albums, which will cost you a considerable amount of money.i think this book is useful to people wanting to know more about Montessori and how she came up with the manips themselves or saw the children react to them but if you're trying to emulate the montessori method in your home and need more information, your money would be better spent elsewhere. for that i would recommend: Teaching Montessori in the Home by Elizabeth Hainstock.

86 of 96 people found the following review helpful. Highlights basic teaching methods and apparatus. By Jasper1165@aol.com This short book is like an Army basic training manual. Montessori teaching methods are described in detail, like recipes in a cookbook. An interesting section on food for children recommends large amounts of fat and sugar foods and therefore seems outdated. The systematic order achieved by the method is described as desirable while too much variety and child/teacher interaction is regarded as undesirable. The book warns that over-stimulating a child's imagination could cause him or her to miss the purpose of the lessons (tell that to Barney). The author's works have a ring of truth throughout and are valuable because of the spirit they convey even today.

Montesori for insiders By Katarina I have purchased this book to get as close as possible to Dr Montessori's thoughts and get a big picture of what Montessori really is - straight from the author. This book is great at that, but I was very disappointed to find that the thin brochure has very poor layout - like a printed word document bound into paperback. And no figures are included at all, although they are mentioned in text. A list of Montessori tools is also useless without figures and illustrations, because one can not visualise what the text is describing. So, all in all, this does not help a parent in actually working the Montessori way - this is more or less just a chain of thoughts that are behind the method. For a practical demonstration some other book must be selected.
