About the Author Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917) was the founder of osteopathy. His father was a doctor and Methodist preacher who moved with the American frontier, which meant that Still grew up in Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri and Kansas. After studying medicine with his father, Dr. Still began his own practice in 1854. He and his family were firm abolitionists and he served briefly in the Civil War. After three members of his family died from spinal meningitis in 1864, he became disillusioned with conventional medicine and started his search for a better way to practice. He discovered the principles of osteopathy in 1874. Shortly afterwards he settled in Kirksville, Missouri where he lived for the rest of his life. It was there, in 1892, that he established the first osteopathic school, the American School of Osteopathy.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Good Bones By Peter P. Fuchs So much of what is termed natural healing in America had its start with Dr. Still. He is a figure of such eminenceto the development of the idea of the body healing itself, that is hard to over-state it. The genesis of many other therapies, Chiropractic, Rolfing Structural Integration and other structural therapies is in Osteopathy. Though there are certainly precedents for some Osteopathic insights (Swedenborg's notion of the movement of cranial bones), the fact is that Dr. Still was a great innovator. Goodman's introduction is quite informative and well organized.( Some of the curiously offbeat machinations of early Osteopaths are described in other texts and make, occasionally, for amusing reading.) A familiarity with this seminal text is important for a notion about howmuch we have lost in contemporary culture in the innate regenerative power of human beings. So while with this book alone you don't get a full picture, it is an inspirational place to start.

Whittaker One of the most interesting books I have ever read about a way to health that is so basic it seems silly, however, it is absolutely true! If you have an interest in living pain free, you should check out this book and a good osteopathy practitioner!

I have read at least 15 of her books. Sail Away is a little different from most of the others, but I enjoyed it. Well worth reading!

It is set during the Civil War and takes place mostly in New Orleans, Louisiana. Josephine Breaux is twenty years old and a reporter for the Morning Clarion in Washington, D.C. She gets information from both sides (using her feminine charms) which help her write great articles for the paper. Her stories were published under the name of Joseph Breaux. Until the day she was exposed and her editor fires her. Outside the newspapers office she is picked up by Pinkerton Agents. They believe she is a spy and are going to drop her off in Virginia unless she can convince them she is not a spy (and loyal to the Union).Josephine convinces Franklin Gray of her loyalty and he takes her to meet Allan Pinkerton and President Lincoln. They want her to go to New Orleans and get them information. She will be popular in New Orleans since the agents have made it look like she is a Southern sympathizer and a spy for their cause. Josephine gets a job at the New Orleans Daily Crescent. This gives Josephine a good cover for going about the city and getting a look at the military boats, installations (forts), and troops. But then an old friend of her mother’s spots her. Will this ruin everything that Josephine could do for the Union cause? You will have to read The Crescent Spy to see what happens to Josephine in New Orleans and how her work helps the Union cause.I truly enjoyed reading The Crescent Spy. The Crescent Spy is an engaging novel, and I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next. There is a lot of history in the book (about fort, troops, and battles), but it is a necessary part of the story. I liked that Josephine was a brave, confidant woman. She was determined to use her talents for good. I give The Crescent Spy 4.5 out of 5 stars. There are just a couple of areas that are little sluggish, but overall a wonderful novel to read. I look forward to reading more novels by Michael Wallace.I received a complimentary copy of The Crescent Spy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. The Crescent Spy By P. Woodland This has been a year full of books on women spies during the Civil War. I think this might have been my fourth or fifth book I’ve read since January. It does seem that books run in cycles. The Crescent Spy takes a different approach in that the heroine is a newspaper reporter. Highly unusual for a female during this time period. Josephine Breaux was happily working at a Washington newspaper coming in with scoops from both sides of the War. She is, however writing as Joseph Breaux – until she is outed by a rival paper. This creates a series of problems – she loses her job, she is picked up by some officers and she thinks she is being hauled off to jail. But she is really being tested and that test lands her at the White House talking to President Lincoln. From there her life changes completely as she finds herself part of Pinkerton’s league of spies. She is sent to New Orleans as she knows the area – her job is to provide information about anything she can about fortifications, preparations, etc.Josephine gets settled in New Orleans and very quickly gets hired and sent on her first assignment out to a fort. From there she settles into her dual life while also dealing with some family issues. She is a rather worldly, very wise young woman at 21 and she says her maturity and knowledge comes from extensive reading. It’s a lot to accept but she does have a complicated back story I’m not going to get into in a review here. She just comes off as a much older character.You can tell from reading that Mr. Wallace did his research into the battle for New Orleans – there is a fair bit of detail at least in regards to the big river fight. Not much in the way of blood and gore, but much in the way of booms, bombs and ship movement. These passages have the reader right in the midst of the battle and it’s not a comfortable place to be.Overall I did enjoy the book. The story was an interesting way to present the battle for New Orleans. It seems like the ending left an opening for another book which would be interesting. Josephine was just hinting at a romance and she was learning more about her past. A second book would further these stories rather than leaving all of those questions hanging in the air as they are now.3.5I received a free copy for my honest review

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Like watching a 3d cinema! By books thru bifocals Reading "The Crescent Spy" by Michael Wallace was like watching a 3d cinema. I could almost see and feel everything the heroine, Josephine Breaux, experienced. She grew up on a Mississippi River boat where her mother danced for a living and entertained certain gentleman callers. They had one intermittent friend known as the Colonel, a gambler who visited randomly and was the closest to a father figure Josephine had. When she turned 16, she decided to become a newspaper writer and by age 20, "Joe" Breaux was a famous reporter working for the Washington DC Clarion at the start of the war between the states. When a competing newspaper blew her cover, accusing her of being a female spy for the confederacy, the Pinkerton agency helped twist her arm to travel to New Orleans (where her mother was from) to spy for the Union, while reporting for the New Orleans Crescent. The plot included a rapidly moving, historical review of the naval battle for New Orleans. The characters were very realistic and most were likeable whether you are a sympathizer for north or south. Josephine's character was particularly well rounded; a very unusual and courageous young woman who experienced multiple horrific tragedies while still a child that shaped the heroic figure she became. There was a hint of romance that left the reader hoping for a sequel with a happy ending for those involved. I very much enjoyed this ARC provided by Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing. This review reflects my honest observations of the content. I believe it should appeal to a wide audience of readers but there are graphic scenes of violence and general references to adult subjects of prostitution and drunkenness that may make it less than appropriate for school aged children.

As someone who's well educated in the fields and topics of ethnobotanicals, entheogens, psychedelics, pharmacology, mental health, and more, I give it one star.I got this pamphlet on Kindle, and I must say that there's some good information in this book, although there's a TON of conjecture, pseudoscience, and frankly insulting hogwash. If you'd like to learn more about DMT please seek out books like 'DMT: The Spirit Molecule' by Dr. Rick Strassman, or books by the brothers McKenna (Terence and Dennis.)For one example of why this book is 'so' bad in my opinion, I will quote a few sentences that put the scope of how much research the author did before writing this..."Users who have indiscriminately used DMT have been known to cause harm to others and to themselves. In such cases, there is a likelihood of suicide."This angers me to an almost irrational extent. Not only have DMT users NOT been "known" to do these things, but it's purely incorrect and fabricated information. The simple fact that "indiscriminate" dosing of DMT would, and will, leave the user incapable of perceiving that they're even still part of this world, but they'd likely be fully physically incapacitated, slumped over and incapable using any of their skeletal muscles to do this supposed "harm" to themselves or others. Suicide would be impossible and out of the question with a sufficient dose, not to mention these so called "indiscriminate" dosages.Not only is this bad information, but it's fear-mongering. This exact "harm and suicide" line of propaganda is what was used to discredit and destroy the reputation of LSD so many years ago--lies it still hasn't recovered from despite its uses for psychotherapy and much more. Psychedelics can be both medicinal substances and spiritual sacraments, and the way the author has neglected to do any real research and instead decided to take the old fear tactic approach in parts of his pamphlet, simply changing the subject of the myth from LSD to DMT, is offensive and unscientific, and I think that one line is enough to inform anyone about how seriously this author should be taken.This was free for me to read, and I still feel like it was a waste. I'm so tired of these vapid cash-grab "books," lacking the scientific truth surrounding the issues they claim to address.I feel so bad for the poor teenagers who's parents are punishing them based on the incorrect and inflammatory false information they're reading in these gross little cookie-cutter publications... UGH.

SO, does DMT offer a look through the swinging door?In talking about the experience, Terence's Brother, Dennis McKenna said, "The problem with DMT, and part of its challenge, is that the experience is inherently ineffable; it cannot be described in ordinary language, it is translinguistic. You come down, slam back into your body, out of breath, suffused with ecstasy, babbling, sobbing. And yet we are linguistic creatures, and there is a nearly irresistible impulse to try to describe it. This begins almost immediately following the trip, as if verbalization were a protective reflex. DMT is more than the mind can handle; it's overwhelming in its raw nakedness; we feel compelled to try to stuff it back into some kind of linguistic box, and yet to do so is to diminish it. All of the descriptions, even Terence's, as elegant as they are, fall short of the actual experience. This is part of the mystery of DMT. It is a phenomenon that can be repeatedly experienced, and yet it is as astonishing the hundredth time as it was the first, and something that strange is worthy of our attention."Dennis is saying that memory isn't the thing. You can hear Mozart and be moved by the experience but after a few hours, when the music is gone, your memory of Mozart isn't the thing. You can even have the tune playing in your head but once the real music starts again, the memory vanishes because it wasn't real.It is the same with the psychedelic experience. After the trip, you are back, and the memory of the thing is playing. So keep this in mind.So Dennis is right but he misses the crucial thing. The reason for the impossibility of a description and a visualisation isn't because a complexity which will be cured by a better syntax or a better language or a better graphics board. It is a mistake to suppose that we see with our eyes and that an artist can see for you. The brain operates, or sees, with the categories of space, time and causation. These are categories live evolved inside and which this universe operates from. The categories of space, time and causation are found in the universe and in us. All of our science, our history, our art and everything operating in relativity in this world of space, time and causation is a reflection of this frequency.What DMT does is it swaps the categories for different `tunings', that is, your space, time and causality categories change and so the DMT universe is now operating on a different frequency of space, time and causation. In the DMT universe, you understand everything happening to you. However, when you return to this universe, when your categories flip back to `normal', the DMT language, the art, those multi-silly puns, the tragedy make no sense at all. This is why it is impossible to bring it back.When the molecule wears off, the categories of space, time and causally fix back to this universe and you are left confused by what took place. You are confused because you jumped into one geometric reality that you function in, back to this geometric reality which you function in. The confusing is because of memory. This mind is trying to remember that mind. Terence McKenna likens it waking from a complicated dream that you understood in the dream but turns to gibberish when you're out of the dream. In the dream an object can have multiple meanings the way a pun has two meanings. Imagine an object with 6 meanings that you understand perfectly in the dream. It sounds impossible from this `waking' state but Terence McKenna says this is what happens.Now the innocent artists who don't know this try to create the experience with technology. But they are making a grievous mistake because technology is of this world whilst DMT is not of this world because and because the frequencies of space, time and causation are different, using our frequencies of space, time and causality only reveals our art. The artist's rendering of glowing trees, naked metallic nudes and pink slugs with three eyeballs only reveal the human imagination in this frequency of space, time and cassation.All this means that DMT will never be boxed into the human imagination because the human is operating on a different frequency and so is the universe. Arthur Schopenhauer writes that only after you die, with the dissolution of the brain, do you go to the other categories of space, time and causality.You can say, therefore, that we are asleep, or, as C.G.Jung called our world, "The land of the dead". In the land of the sleepers, there is evolution and the biological animal. There is a reason for our sleeping state. We are asleep so we can harness scientific materialism. Unfortunately, materialists make the mistake of believing that because of the success of scientific materialism, divinity is dead.

About the furthest I've gone into the drug world is marijuana. With that being said I've always been really curious about different psychodelic drugs including DMT. I'd seen the rave reviews of Colin Willis's other works, and when I came across this book, I thought I'd give it a read to indulge my curiousity.DMT, also known as Demethyltryptamine is a drug used to put you in a subconcious/concious state. Similar to acid, shrooms, and other psycodelic drugs out there. This book begins by explaining what the drug is and all basic facts associated with DMT. It then delves deeper into the history of DMT, talking about it's discovery and historical studies. There's also a good portion of the book dedicated to the science behind the drug; which I found very interesting, because most online sources I'd found regarding DMT don't really mention the science behind it. In fact almost all pieces that I've read on DMT were more about the feelings and effects related to it, rather than the science behind those effects. So this book opened up a lot more information for me.As with most pieces about DMT this book also covers all of the effects of DMT. But, unlike many sources it doesn't purely focus on the positive attributes, it also explains in detail the negatives of DMT. Because the book was written in a way that was neither promoting nor demeaning DMT, I found that almost everything within it had a scientific base behind it and was written in a way very general way. It wasn't trying to persuade you to use the drug, or not to use it- it was just informing you on using it. I really trusted all of the information in the book because of this and I especially appreciated the fact that they spoke in detail about BOTH the positives and negatives of the drug.Aside from the effects, the book also discusses the legal risks behind the drug and the dangers involved. There is a lot of critical information included in the book that really can help you grasp whether or not the use of DMT is something worth doing for you. I also really like that it quickly discussed the cost of DMT, which was something I had no previous knowledge of and is hard to find clear answers to online.Overall, a very informative read. I still haven't decided if I'd ever like to try psycodelics, but I do know that I have a lot more information to make an intelligent decision with after reading this book.
