Jung, in contrast to Freud, has typically been considered more sympathetic to women largely because of his emphasis on the feminine as a way of being in the world and on the ‘anima’, the unconscious feminine aspect of male personality. Feminists, however, have viewed Jung’s whole notion of the ‘feminine’ with suspicion, seeing it as a projection of male psyche and not an authentic understanding of female humanity.

For Demaris Wehr both feminism and Jungian psychology have been guiding forces, and in this book, originally published in 1988, she mediates between feminists and classical Jungians – two groups historically at odds. She faces squarely the male-centred assumptions of some Jungian concepts and challenges Jung’s claims for the universality and purely empirical basis of his work, but nevertheless maintains an appreciation for the value of Jung’s understanding of human nature and the process of individuation. By bringing the insights of feminist theology to bear on the seemingly unbridgeable gap between analytical psychology and feminism, she succeeds in reclaiming Jungian psychology as a freeing therapy for women and reveals it as the ultimately liberating vision its founder intended it to be.

A must-read for women interested in Jungian psychology By A Customer The author is both a Jungian and a feminist and presents a sympathetic view of Jung, along with a sensitive, articulate critique of the problems of Jung's work, including the concepts of the anima/animus, etc. The book is thought-provoking, helps to clear up a number of thorny issues regarding Jung's view of women, and is well-written and reader-friendly.

Took quite a while to get to her own critique, but still very interesting once she finished laying out all the groundwork.

Every Jungian Needs to Read This By Alexis I am a student of Jung and also a feminist with a theological background and a girlfriend. it's 2016 and I really needed to finally read this. you just saved and revived some very important aspects of my soul that had been lost in the depths of confusion with no modeled direction out. well all pride ourselves on our abilities to discern the truth, but at times the darkness can be disorienting even to the adept traveler. We all need to seek out like minds on our paths for prescriptive insight unique to the likeness of our journies. thank you for being a lighthouse of inspiration for a fellow lone thinker.

Published by Floricanto and Berkeley Presses, Maria Nieto’s newest novel treats the reader to a fast paced drama told with grit and undercoated with humor. The story, set in 1971, is centered on the canny, spirited and charming Los Angeles Times reporter, Alejandra Marisol. Alejandra displays relentless tenacity as she delves into the bowels of corrupt city politics, shady real-estate transactions, and an overbearing Archdiocese to fish out the truth surrounding unspeakable crimes using the art of deduction and forensic science. While the story clearly demonstrates that the present is inextricably tied to the past, it does not let us forget that ordinary people have the ability to override the power of history to shape destiny. Water of Life mysteriously flows like the ancient LA River which still runs under Olvera Street, the original pueblo of Los Angeles. Water is life and has no borders, penetrating our bones and teeth to give us clues on where we were born and where we ended our path. But as Maria Nieto writes, “But Life is never a clearly defined path. Five dead bodies in the back of a pickup truck, a cardinal with interests beyond the church, a real estate developer with ties to the Archdiocese, a possible metaphor with no known meaning, all proof that nothing was clear.” This is not your daddy’s LA Noir. Nieto is a new refreshing voice in this predominantly Anglo male genre. Her heroine is a feisty Chicana LA Times reporter that loves her Revlon lipstick, finds solace in her blue VW bug named Azulita, and is not afraid to confront the big boys that run the City of Angels like their own private palm-laden country club. Nieto uses history, culture, science, and sharp female intuition with dark humor to tell her story that will keep you guessing and smiling. Herbert Sigüenza, playwright, actor and co-founder of Culture Clash. Alejandra Marisol has it all, or does she? She works as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times and has been assigned to cover the story of five murdered bodies found in a truck. The homicide investigator is sure the responsible person(s) is Detective Ashworth and his Los Angeles Police Department accomplices involved in two previous murders, but Alejandra isn’t so sure. The twists and turns of solving this murder are unrelenting and take Ms. Marisol on a ride of her life. The author, Maria Nieto, has managed to take the reader into an underground movement that is ugly, and at the same time provides remarkable insight into how the forensic experts work at their craft to capture the guilty. Her talent is right up there with some great suspense writers—no doubt about it! Corina Martínez Chaudhry – CEO, The Latino Author (www.thelatinoauthor.com) Maria Nieto has created a proto-Chicana crime reporter/solver who just gets more and more appealing. It’s fun and clever the way she works barrio denizens into her exploits in the seamy Los Angeles of the 1970s. I hope there are lots more stories to come—I couldn’t put this one down till the awesome finish. Armando Rendón, Editor/founder of The Latino Literary Online Magazine, Somos en escrito, and author of Chicano Manifesto and The Adventures of Noldo and His Magical Scooter.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a fast paced, smart, funny at times “who done it” By JohnWasHere This is the 2nd novel I’ve read by the author and I really enjoyed revisiting these cool characters. Like the first book, this one is set in 1970’s-ish LA with the same characters. I guess it is a sequel, and there were references back to events in first book “Pig behind the Bear” but I didn’t feel like I necessarily had to read the 1st one without jumping right into this new story. Enough was covered to get the first time reader up to speed, while still being fresh and not really re-hashing in any way. Sprinkled throughout are bits of real historic events and characters based on some real people that actually gives the story a real feel of authenticity. I am not an avid reader, by a long shot, and this one was really right up my alley…..a fast paced, smart, funny at times “who done it” that was great fun to read. I’d love to see this turned into a graphic novel.

It's fun towatch the unexpected development of the protagonist By Norm Matloff, University of California at Davis This book and its "prequel," The Pig Behind the Bear, are absolutely delightful. It's fun to watch the unexpected development of the protagonist, Alejandra Marisol, from an aspiring Latina journalist with a harsh-life background into a clever detective, with fun doses of glimpses into life in LA's Latino communities. Those from the LA area from that era are in for a special treat down Memory Lane. The scene with the wrestling matches at Olympic Auditorium is especially charming.¡Viva la Professora Nieto! I look forward to her next book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Humanity at its inhumane worst By Russell Merris On a wild ride with as many twists and turns as Mulholland Drive – or the twisted political dealings of William Mulholland for that matter – this dark but compelling sequel to Pig Behind The Bear continues Nieto's fearless exploration of humanity to its inhumane worst.

Here, in this fledgling post-Communist world, Chloe meets a charming American vagabond named Johnny, who carries a guitar, an easy smile—and a lifetime of secrets. From Treblinka to Trieste, from Karnikava to Krakow, from Vilnius to Venice, the unlikely band of friends and lovers traverse the old world on a train trip that becomes a treacherous journey into Europe’s and Johnny’s darkest past—a journey that jeopardizes Chloe’s plans for the future and all she ever thought she wanted.

Fateful European trip By carolynfromoz Chloe Divine has dreamed for years of going to Barcelona with her best friend Hannah after they graduate from high school. However, her plans have been complicated by their boyfriends brothers Blake and Mason declaring that they want to go with them and the fact that her parents won't let her go unless they go via Eastern Europe to visit family in Latvia and lay flowers in Treblinka where her grandmother's parents died. Although this doesn't appeal as much as going straight to Barcelona, Chloe and her friends are swayed by her grandmother offering to pay for their trip. Right from the start nothing seems to go right with their trip and after they meet a handsome stranger called Johnny Rainbow the friends soon find themselves squabbling as secrets rise to the surface which threaten to undermine their relationship. The book is somewhat longer than it needs to be as it was a bit of a slow boiler and took me a while to engage with it. However, once Johnny Rainbow showed up, the story suddenly stepped up a level as the friends started to interact with him and become more individual characters, rather than the amorphous bunch of typical high school kids they had been up until then. Johnny is a great character, beautiful and magnetic but ultimately flawed and tragic and he made the book for me. Paullina Simons invents great male characters and writes beautiful love stories and parts of this are as good as her best.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Exquisite, engrossing, and entertaining By Honolulubelle Favorite Quotes:“Is that what they called karma? Or was it simply what happened next?”“Chloe didn’t know where to start. That she didn’t know how to start was more vital.”“She had kept her dreams deliberately small, thinking they might be easier to realize, but now feared she hadn’t kept them small enough.”“There was something about Johnny Rainbow that pierced her heart with both sorrow and gladness, cut apart the place which all of herself came from.”“How do the rest of us stay so wrapped up in our own heads and lives and hearts and problems that we don’t see what’s a breath away from us?”“She can barely remember what he looks like, but she cannot forget what she felt like when she looked at him.”My Review:When I signed on and even started reading the impressive tome of Lone Star, I expected to be reading about people living in or from Texas. I was so very very wrong. Texas was on the only state the boy with the Lone Star tattoo claimed he had never traversed. So instead of Texas, we meet the character with the Lone Star tattoo in Europe, Latvia of all places. I must admit, before I picked up this book, what I knew of Latvia would be a shameful reflection of my public school education… nothing, I knew nothing. I know a considerable amount about it now, and I enjoyed the lesson and the journey, even though the travel for the characters was rather harrowing and tedious, terrifying, and exciting. The plot being 4 new high school graduates/life-long friends/neighbors/now couples, embarked on a European adventure sponsored by one girl’s grandmother - with the provision that they visit grandmother’s relatives and seek out the areas and pay tribute to the death camps where her childhood friends were interred. Gruesome granny if you ask me, but she paid for the travel for the 4 broke teen-agers, so of course they agreed to her terms. Their travel was arduous due to the unreliable transit systems; their accommodations were generally unsavory and abominable (hostels); and their tempers and relationships were stressed and tested to the breaking point. They missed connections, they fought, they were robbed, stranded, fell in love, were heartbroken, and unearthed unforgivable betrayals. Secrets – everyone has them – but close quarters and stressful conditions tends to fray even nerves of steel and loosen the tongue – of course they imploded. The story was long yet well-written and engrossing, and despite the youthful characters, I was never bored. Ms. Simon obviously well remembers the painful discomforts, self-consciousness, and insecurities of that age. Her writing is smart, observant, insightful, and thoughtful. I experienced a full range of deeply felt emotion as I read. I laughed aloud several times, I was thrilled and excited by their adventures and discoveries, but at other times my heart was squeezed and also broken, I was frequently anxious, and then just devastated, yet I thoroughly entertained throughout. Hours later I was still contemplating the complexity of the story, and a day later I continued to mull - unable to move on to another book and ruing the lack of an epilogue. To boil down this long review – it was exquisite.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Average Read By Kristine I was so excited to get my hands on this book. The Bronze Horseman is one of my all time favourite books and my favourite love story so I couldn't wait to see what Paullina Simons had come up with in Lone Star. I have to admit that I had very high expectations. It just about kills me to say, but this book fell short of my expectations. Perhaps they were too high or maybe I was expecting something as epic as The Bronze Horseman, I don't know. I just wasn't able to get as absorbed or lost in this book like I did with her previous work. The characters were very immature and annoying at times. I think that they may appeal more to younger readers. The appeal is definitely geared towards that audience instead of a broader one. I had issues with most of the characters but I have to say that I really disliked Johnny and hated the attraction between him and Chloe. I felt that it lacked substance and honestly felt like he was the wrong guy for her from the moment they met. Because of that, the sweeping love story between the two of them fell flat for me. She should have been with someone else as far as I was concerned. I really wanted her with someone else.I have just recently returned from a trip to Europe where I spent three days in Barcelona so I was interested in the setting and adventures that Chloe and her friends were going to take. My next big adventure will be a Baltic Cruise so I was extremely excited to read about their time in that area. If there is one thing that Simons does well it is her descriptions of historically significant places and events. In fact, she pens them so well that I can say that my interest in the Baltic area comes partly from reading her books. They have left me wanting to know more and I have actually thoroughly researched the areas and events that she has written about. Lone Star was no exception. The way she described the area made me feel like I was there. I was captivated by her description of Treblinka. The book took some time to get going. Johnny didn't even come on the scene until after 30% at which time it did pick up and become more interesting. This was also the time they were starting their adventures so there was more of what I like best in Simons writing. Although I didn't love the story I did adore the setting and descriptions which almost made up for it. Also, I was really happy with how the book ended but I will say no more about that. This book is not a bad book but it does not compare at all to The Bronze Horseman and I think that readers need to get rid of the expectations. Mine were too high and probably impacted my opinion slightly.

Gregg Would give it a Zero Star if possible.Within 5 minutes of opening the package I contacted Amazon to return it.There was BIG PRINTING AND LOTS OF SPACING.Had nothing in it regards to being a guide, Great Cover and title but definitely not a guide to a cure.LESS THAN 4 pages underA Chapter called "Prevention and Treatment Options",Exercise,Healthy Eating- see a nutritionist!Lose Weight,Medication, take it if your Doctor prescribes it.Genius for ripping people off ..... if you did this in the first place you would of Prevented Metabolic Syndrome.Said it was very short book multiple times. NO KIDDING

This book comes at the right time for me.I knew about Obesity and Diabetes and the resultant problems. But Metabolic Syndrome was something I was not sure about. I did not know about it and this book served as a learning for me.What I loved about this book was that it didn't aim to be grand. It just aimed to inform the reader about what Metabolic Syndrome was, what were these symptoms and how one could tackle them. It i simple and educative which is why I loved it.I feel Obesity is a problem that the world needs to take a consensus on. We keep eating processed foods instead of good home cooked food and our eating habits keep getting vitiated as compared to the earlier generations. I feel the unnecessary focus we give to a lifestyle which is devoid of cooking is going to harm us in the future.I digress. This book was a great one. It has cemented my thoughts on taking small steps to lose weight. Thanks for this Wade.

I was so confused about this condition and my doctor made me feel like I was bothering her when I kept asking questions. Of course, her solution was to prescribe medicine to me. I’m not a big fan of taking medicine so I started researching information about the condition. I purchased Metabolic Syndrome and I’m so happy I did. The book broke everything down in a way that was easy to comprehend. I feel armed with knowledge on how to take care of myself and hopefully help get rid of the problem. This book provided me with invaluable information which was my alternative to taking medication. I followed all the advice from the book and after 2 weeks I felt better. I highly, highly recommend this book.
