As Evelynne Lowry, the daughter of a copper baron, comes of age in early 20th century Montana, the lives of horses dovetail with the lives of people and her own quest for womanhood becomes inextricably intertwined with the future of two men who face nearly insurmountable losses—a lonely steer wrestler named Zion from the Montana highline, and a Cheyenne team roper named William Black Kettle, the descendant of peace chiefs. An epic that runs from the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 to the ore and industry of the 1930s, American Copper is a novel not only about America’s hidden desire for regeneration through violence but about the ultimate cost of forgiveness and the demands of atonement. It also explores the genocidal colonization of the Cheyenne, the rise of big copper, and the unrelenting ascent of dominant culture. Evelynne’s story is a poignant elegy to horses, cowboys both native and euro-american, the stubbornness of racism, and the entanglements of modern humanity during the first half of the twentieth century. Set against the wide plains and soaring mountainscapes of Montana, this is the American West re-envisioned, imbued with unconditional violence, but also sweet, sweet love.

American Copper: A Novel, by Shann Ray

Review “The train . . . is the defining symbol of industry and expansionism, and the sentences in Shann Ray’s debut novel, American Copper, race across the page like the hammering of spikes, the clatter of ties, the banshee wail of the steam engines that signal the violent seizure of the West . . . You might expect this saga—which chronicles the white and Cheyenne experience—to clock in at a doorstopping 5,000 pages, but Ray balances his scenes with lyrical summary so that time expands swiftly. This stylistic move—along with the wild landscape and wilder characters—makes American Copper read like the offspring of Jim Harrison’s Legends of the Fall.” --EsquireThe prose is elegant, precise and observant, as when Zion notes there are "only two races of men... decent and unprincipled." -Kirkus starred review“Beautifully told . . . Ray's poetic sensibility shows in his careful prose; its spare style may recall Jim Harrison's Legends of the Fall, while the range of history covered is similar to that of Shannon Burke's Into the Savage Country. A Western epic with appeal for literary readers, this seems likely to become a classic Montana read.” —Library Journal“Brings to mind Cormac McCarthy and Annie Proulx . . . lyrical, prophetic, brutal yet ultimately hopeful.” — Dave Eggers“Tough, poetic, and beautiful.” -- Sherman Alexie"In American Copper, Shann Ray harnesses his formidable sensibilities as both poet and short-form fiction writer to create a balance between the intimate and the epic. Contrasting Montana’s early-day rodeo riders with the rise of a dictatorial copper baron, the entire state becomes not only a backdrop but a mirror for complicated clashes of race and class, family and tribe, gender and society. Ray’s range of characterizations reminds us that despite its mythic tropes, the West has been a place of mind-boggling identities and all-too-human tragedies for a very long time. I was reminded as much of the tribal folklore of James Willard Schultz as the fearless genre-bending of Dorothy M. Johnson, and the pitch-perfect naturalism of James Welch. No small feat." – Malcolm Brooks"Some books devour their readers; other books are written to be devoured. With an emotional heart as enormous as the Montana mountains, Shann Ray's American Copper is that rare book that does both. In one breath you'll marvel at Ray's poetic lyricism, with the next you'll grunt at his toughness. And in between you'll turn the pages impulsively. With American Copper, Ray announces himself as one of the finest writers working today." – Peter Geye“American Copper is a spacious and stirring book that arcs itself across the dark skies of the West. Centered on Evelynne Lowry, privileged daughter of an insatiable copper king, the novel divines the deepest sources of American tragedy—the implacability of wealth, the heartlessness of colonialism, the rage of racial injustice. Shann Ray’s beautiful prose blends the lyrical yearning of James Welch with the historic sweep of Philipp Meyer to create an epic tale anchored in bitter loss and annealed by powerful love.” --Alyson Hagy"This grave, unusual novel unfolds with a beautiful evenhandedness, balancing the outer world and the inner life, Cheyenne and white experiences of early 20th-century Montana. Ray’s feel for the heart and soul of Montana and its people—all its people—graces every page. - Andrea Barrett, author of Archangel and The Air We Breathe.“An expansive and luminous tale of the American West told through crystalline prose. American Copper ushers Shann Ray into the company of Montana's finest writers. It's a read as compelling as Harrison's masterwork Legends of the Fall and Kittredge's Willow Field. Heartbreaking and heart pounding and not to be missed.” -- Debra Magpie Earling

Light-filled and lovely By David Abrams If I compared a book to a twilit mountain range washed in purples and oranges and reds, the sight of it causing you, the reader who has trudged through a dull landscape of ordinary novels, to stumble in your sojourn and fall to one knee in reverence for the toothy horizon; and if I said reading this particular novel was as bracing and invigorating as drinking from a cold, clear alpine stream; and if I said it was gorgeous as a coffee-table book and deeply meditative as the Book of Psalms; and if I said just one book can, however briefly, change the way you look at both the natural world and human nature—if I said all that, you’d want to read this book, wouldn’t you?Good, glad to hear it, because American Copper by Shann Ray is all this, and more. And if you think I’m overstating the qualities of this novel set in Montana, well then my dear friend, it’s obvious you haven’t read it. I’m here to help you correct that oversight.American Copper has a huge timesweep, from the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 to the years just before World War II, but it is, at heart, an intimate novel. It traces the intertwined lives of three individuals: Evelynn Lowry, daughter of a copper baron who all but owns the city of Butte, Montana; William Black Kettle, a Native American who works the rodeo circuit and longs for peace in the midst of violence; and a bear of a man named Middie who ends up working as a bouncer on a passenger train.American Copper is a stunning work of fiction which begs the reader to sit quietly, block the loud static of everyday living, and slip into the gulfstream of an author’s sure-handed prose which is at once muscular and gentle. Ray himself says it best in this sentence lifted from the pages of the novel: "The language in his mouth was stark and eloquent, warrior-like one minute but in the next moment as light-filled as water, and as lovely."

Moore This lovely work floats like its symbolic butterfly to gently take its place among the best of Montana literature. It straddles the fine line between fierce reality and romantic myth while giving the readers characters we deeply care about. The knowledge of the West is there and while the theme eases close to sentimentality, it stays restrained. A sure hand on the reins. The proper bit in the mouth. This first novel oozes the character of the author. With Shann Ray one can be guaranteed diamond-brilliant prose and redemption in both suffering and joy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I felt that I was reading an epic poem, like The Odyssey By Mystic by the Lake This book was definitely different from what I expected. Instead of a straight-up novel, I felt that I was reading an epic poem, like The Odyssey. The writing was like poetry, often with short and staccato lines, and not even full sentences. The characters were nothing like I had encountered before: the strong-willed and eventually independent white woman; the loving Native American; and the bruiser German-American man. However, as this was a poem of sorts, I felt it didn't answer the practical questions I was asking. 1) What happened to Josef Lowry's huge fortune? It seemed that Eve turned her back on it. So what happened to it in the end? 2) Were there actual cases of white women marrying Native American men in those days and going to live with their tribes? How were their children raised? What would happen to Eve's and William's children? Would they eventually inherit Josef's fortune?

Riders of the Purple Sage

Zane Grey's most enduring classic--the book that invented the myth of the American West. In the little village of Cottonwoods, Utah, Mormon rancher Jane Withersteen endures persecution, religious zealots, and cattle rustlers trying to prey on her land. Aided by Lassiter, the famous gunman, Jane and her friends must escape the clutches of her most dangerous enemies.

The Rainbow Trail

John Shefford rode into Utah in search of a new life, and when he met Fay Larkin, a beautiful woman charged with murder, he knew he had found it. Breaking her out of jail was the easy part. Now he has a posse and violent bands of Indians to outrun; a murderous trek through a trackless waste; and a brutal passage through white-water hell.

Two Teamed Together At Last By Charles Wheeler This mass market paperback is the first time the greatest novel of the American West , Rider of the Purple Sage, has been teemed with its sequel, The Rainbow Trail; and it was about time! Without the sequel you don't know the finish of the first book. There is little to be said about Riders that hasn't already been said, as it was ground breaking work when it was first published in 1912, and Zane Grey's descriptive ability to show you the land of canyons and sage slopes is beyond belief if you haven't been there and seen it for your self which the vast majority of the people had not in 1912--an era before roads, movies or TV--even pictorial magazines. This edition has large enough print for even my tired old eyes, and opens easily enough even though it is 680 pages. A great great addition to any library of Zane Grey's work to have and own.

Corene ascends her throne By Amazon Customer I absolutely loved the first book in this series, Troubled Waters, but unfortunately I really didn't care for the second book, Royal Airs. So when the third book was released, I was worried but knew I had to read it in hopes that it could possibly be any where as good as the first book. I struggled through the first chapter, struggled with Corene's character and then it happened. I liked the book. Corene doesn't know what she wants for her life and runs off to Malinqua. She soon finds herself in mired in intrigue but luckily she's brought Foley along to keep her safe. Now that we've spent 2 books in Welce, it was intriguing to be immersed in another country set in this other world. I loved learning about the Malinqua culture and to get a better glimpse of the closer countries due to the presence of the other princesses.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent continuation of series!Great! By avid reader I have to say I wasn't thrilled to begin reading Corene's story as she wasn't that likeable a character in the first two books. Also it takes place in a different country. However ,I was wrong to hesitate! This is as good as the first two books and makes me hope Sharon Shinn keeps the stories coming. So good!Great new characters and some familiar ones.Surprisingly made me laugh and tear up at different times...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love the first two books in this series By Critterbee I love the first two books in this series, Troubled Waters and Royal Airs. Corene really deserved to have her own book, and I loved that it was set outside of Welce. Like Zoe and Josetta, Corene is not perfect while being very likable at the same time. Corene is strong, opinionated and not going to sit back and let others decide where her life is going to go. Jewelled Fire includes a touch of mystery, humor, political maneuvering, action, and romance. Also, Shinn is a fantasy author who writes respectfully about people, and does not regulate her female characters to being bystanders, or as characters who exist merely for things to happen to, or as inconsistently insipid decorative flowers.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A Good Read By Emmanuel This was a great book. Very comforting, and insightful; it's a fairly quick read as well. I would have given it 5 stars but rarely do I give anything 5 stars. This came fairly close though. It reads much like a father, or parental figure would speak to a child. Not in the sense of looking down the nose but loving and downright truthful. A good read that reminds you of what you want to be.

14 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Book By Lisa Cox This was an extremely helpful book. It's message is timeless. I believe the author had more insight into the trials and problems we face today than in those of his own time.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. quietly insightful By MJ A relative recommended this book to me because I am at a crossroads in my life and have been reading books on mindfulness and meditation. Hall's thoughts on the healing potential of spirituality fit well in that genre even though he wrote this book a century ago. As a physician, his sense of spirituality draws from the natural world more than religion, and for that reason his perspective would appeal to a wide audience. Anyone suffering from anxiety, mild depression, or feelings of disconnection from the world will find gems of wisdom in this compact book on healing the mind. This edition has a few minor typographical errors (mostly words merged together), but it is far better than many the public access e-books I have read in the past.

Relationship Enhancement Therapy (RE) is a couples-therapy system conceived of, designed, and first implemented by Bernard Guerney Jr., who integrated the client-centered theory of Carl Rogers, the interpersonal theory of Henry Stack Sullivan, the behavior modification and learning theories of Skinner and Bandura, and the psychodynamic theory of Freud, in formulating RE. In this book Dr. Scuka presents an up-to-date, comprehensive theoretical and practical treatment of RE, in which he gives the reader a guide to implementing the principles of this dynamic theory. The book is written principally with couples therapy in mind, although there is an acknowledged relevance to family therapy, and the author calls attention the many skills and therapy techniques that would be applicable to family therapy. Though designed to allow a therapist of any level of experience to begin working with the RE model, this book is more than a standard cookbook, as it considers a variety of special RE therapy techniques, discusses the entire clinical intake process, the application of the RE model to the treatment of affairs, use with difficult clients, and family therapy issues such as domestic violence and stepfamilies.

Not only does Scuka thoroughly cover each step with care, but he allows the reader to understand his ideas via examples that create a colorful palate of information and allow the reader to visualize his ideas." - Brent Fladmo, Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy

About the Author Rob Scuka, Ph.D., M.S.W., is Executive Director of the National Institute of Relationship Enhancement (NIRE), and has served as an Adjunct Faculty Member at the School of Social Work, University of Maryland at Baltimore.

Relationship Enhancement: Healing Through Deep Empathy By James Koval I owned Relationship Enhancement Therapy over a month prior to attending my first RE Therapist's Training conducted by Dr. Scuka. The training is exceptional, and certainly served to reinforce what I had already garnered from his book. Scuka's book presents a review of evaluative research on RE substantiating its effectiveness, and challenges some current arguments questioning the value of communication/conflict skills training in therapy. His work detailing RE applications in cases of domestic violence provides a very thorough and well balanced discussion for assessing the best interests of victims within a couples' intervention model. I found the book to be both very cogent in presenting the RE Therapy Model and very illustrative in its clinical applications, which should be of value for both the novice or experienced clinician. He presents excellent case studies to guide the reader, and tackles in a single chapter what for most clinicians is one of the most complicating of couple traumas, infidelity. Dr. Scuka's writing style and his efforts throughout his multiple case studies, to open his own self-dialogue to the reader, afforded me ample opportunity to feel as if I were in his clinical office working to apply RE right along with him and his clients.

For those wanting to learn RE with couples, take one of Scuka's excellent classes first. This is not an introductory work.

Very Comprehensive and Useful By Beth This book is based on the well researched Relationship Enhancement (RE) model, which has roots in Rogerian, behavioral, psychodynamic and interpersonal studies and theories and which was conceived by psychologist Bernard Guerney.Books for couples' therapists tend to be one of two varieties: lists of "cookbook" interventions with minimal conceptual or research underpinnings or conceptual treatises which are difficult to translate into actual practice.Rob Scuka's Relationship Enhancement Therapy manages to articulate both rationale and techniques for interventions in a clear and concise manner. Indeed, Scuka has seemed to anticipate almost any eventuality that can transpire in a couples session and provides guidance as to how to handle each effectively. Clinical vignettes are both illustrative and engaging. Perhaps his most useful skill is his ability to draw the reader into the mind of the strategizing therapist. As a clinical psychologist and couples therapist with over 20 years experience, I have never found a more useful guide than this.

The Spirit in Man, Art and Literature offers unique and penetrating insights into the lives and opinions of some of the most significant players in the cultural life of the twentieth century. Carl Gustav Jung was at the heart of that cultural life, pioneering, along with Freud, a new interpretation of what it meant to be human in the modern age. This volume reveals the full range of Jung's involvement in this process, from his famous analysis of 'Psychology and Literature' to his landmark texts on Joyce's Ulysses and Picasso's paintings. Jung writes of Freud from the perspective of one who was "permitted a deep glimpse into the mind of this remarkable man," and through the memories and opinions recorded in The Spirit in Man, Art and Literature, the reader is offered a similar privilege.

Review "[These essays] reveal the breadth of the great psychiatrist's interests and the rigorous originality with which he attacked diverse manifestations of human creativity."--The Virginia Quarterly Review

Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: German

From the Back Cover In the nine essays that comprise this volume, written between 1922 and 1941, Jung's attention was directed mainly to the qualities of personality that enable the creative spirit to introduce radical innovations into realms as diverse as medicine, Oriental studies, the visual arts, and literature.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A DIVERSE COLLECTION OF JUNG'S ESSAYS By Steven H Propp This book contains some miscellaneous essays written by Jung on a wide variety of topics; e.g., "Paracelsus," "On the Relation of Analytic Psychology to Poetry," "Ulysses," "Picasso," etc. Here are some representative quotations from the book:"The historical conditions which preceded Freud were such that they made a phenomenon like himself necessary, and it is precisely the fundamental tenet of his teaching---namely, the repression of sexuality---that is most clearly conditioned in this historical sense." (Pg. 34)"(Freud) sees as his time forces him to see. This comes out most clearly in his book The Future of an Illusion, where he draws a picture of religion which corresponds exactly with the prejudices of a materialistic age." (Pg. 35)"Freud's inadequate training in philosophy and in the history of religion makes itself painfully conspicuous, quite apart from the fact that he had no understanding of what religion was about." (Pg. 45)"Like ancient Rome, we today are once more importing every form of exotic superstition in the hope of finding the right remedy for our sickness." (Pg. 60)"That is the secret of great art, and of its effect on us. The creative process, so far as we are able to follow it at all, consists in the unconscious activation of an archetypal image, and in elaborating and shaping this image into the finished work." (Pg. 82)"I am a psychiatrist... I must therefore warn the reader: the tragi-comedy of the average man, the cold shadow-side of life, the dull grey of spiritual nihilism are my daily bread." (Pg. 115)"I can assure the reader that Picasso's psychic problems, so far as they find expression in his work, are strictly analogous to those of my patients. Unfortunately, I cannot offer proof on this point..." (Pg. 135)

10 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Read for completeness--not his best By Neal J. Pollock Art & literature provided Jung with data with which to correlate his model of the psyche. Furthermore, they provided the means for his presentation of profound observations of human nature & behavior. This is not my favorite volume of the collected works, but it is interesting. Read volume 18, The Symbolic Life for more information/observations on these topics. My favorite quotes in this book are:p. 4 Nothing exerts a stronger psychic effect upon the human environment, and especially upon children, than the life which the parents have not lived.p. 14 (quoting Paracelsus): `His motto is said to have been alterius non sit, qi suus esse potert (Let him not be another's who can be his own).'p. 47 Doubt alone is the mother of scientific truth.p. 60 Human instinct knows that all great truth is simple.
