Interesting and thought provoking second novel By Marie Smith Written by the author of "The Man From Primrose Lane", James Renner’s second work of fiction is a captivating assembly of horror, science fiction, conspiracy, and lost love.When Jack Feltner returns home to small town Ohio, it is to help his sister Jean deal with their elderly father, and his struggle with dementia. Before Jack has spent one night in his old house, he makes the re-acquaintance of Nils, an old school friend, and Samantha, Jack’s high school girlfriend. Tony, Sam’s husband and Jack’s former best friend has either gone missing or has committed suicide.Sam asks for Jacks help in locating Tony. She is convinced he has killed himself because of his apparent mental and emotional decline right before his disappearance. The case is still under investigation by law enforcement, and the popular notion is that Tony was stealing from the hospital where he practiced psychiatry. Jack agrees to help Sam, and what follows is the unraveling of a reality that no one suspected or could have imagined."The Great Forgetting" is written with a high level of energy and suspense. Unheard of characters round out bizarre twists of actual world events. I very much enjoyed my time spent in Mr. Renner’s world. Overall the book had hints of Bradbury, Vonnegut, and Koontz. James Renner does a great job of making us wonder if we're crazy for not believing. While Man from Primrose Lane is still my favorite, this book solidifies my love of Renner's ability to push imagination and storytelling past my comfort zone.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. more questions than answers By eugeneyiga I've always been fascinated by dreaming and this book has strengthened my eagerness to explore the subject. And while some may toss the work aside because they can't keep an open mind (or think there's not much to be gained from a book so short), it's quite intriguing if you're prepared to give it a chance. Oddly enough, I like the fact that it raises many questions without offering concrete solutions because that forces us to come up with our own. Many of these ideas, which have been the subject of several films, include the following:1. Can we communicate with the dead in our dreams?Raizizun explains that death is only the end of the physical body but not the end of the "mechanism of consciousness which is the seat of thought and emotion". Raizizun also explains that we can meet and converse with many of the "misnamed dead" when we go to sleep, just as if they were alive. But how do we know that we're communicating with our long-gone loved ones and not simply experiencing subconscious symbols of what they represent? And is the only way to communicate with the dead when we're asleep (Bruce Willis and his wife at the end of The Sixth Sense) or can some gifted "mystics and sages" do so while they're still awake (Matt Damon using the power of touch in Hereafter)? I honestly don't know.2. Can dreams predict the future and warn us of doom?"The ego is ever watchful and it always impresses the lower mind when danger approaches," Raizizun points out. "The extent [to] which we are guided and warned from the ego depends [on] how much we are not swayed by our physical methods of artificial civilisation implying the power to impress the astral experience on the physical brain." But can we actually alter what's supposed to be? Or are attempts to alter what's supposed to be exactly what makes it happen (Sandra Bullock in Premonition)? These questions lead to more conundrums about destiny and fate much like in Minority Report, a movie I've seen three times and haven't yet figured out. I honestly don't know.3. Can we communicate with each other in our dreams?During our dreams we can meet "not only the misnamed dead but also many of those who are still in the physical body". This works best with minds "in close sympathy with each other". We can even do so without being aware that we are: "Your nights may be made useful even if you are not conscious of yourself out of the body by suggesting to yourself upon retiring that you will go somewhere and meet someone and assist them in an unselfish act. If you persist in your suggestion on retiring, your spirit will go where you demand it to go." While Inception focused on this idea, it turned into a confusing exploration of concepts writer/director Christopher Nolan might not even understand. Guess what? I honestly don't know.Dream journalingThe book doesn't go into much detail on the "rigid training" required to remember or control our dreams. My approach is to keep a dream journal. All you need is a notebook and a pen next to your bed (with a lamp or torch close by in case you wake up in the middle of the night and need to jot things down before you fall asleep again). As you lay in bed each night, repeat out lout that you will remember your dreams. This `prepares' the subconscious mind and leaves it in a state of expectation that is often followed through. As soon as you wake up (and before you move a muscle or even open your eyes), recall what happened in as much detail as you can. Once you've remembered all you can, get up and write it down before getting started with the day.And what should we do with the information we gather from monitoring our dreams? Not take it too seriously, for one. "I do not claim that our physical plane affairs should be guided entirely by dreams nor are dreams of the fortune-telling variety to be relied upon," Raizizun advises. "You must use your reason and judgement in this the same as anything else, and only when the student has attained [that] point in his development where there is no break in consciousness, may he be guided by the astral life." Still, it's useful to spend some time interpreting them with resources like Dreammoods while always remembering that each person's symbols are different and that your first intuitive understanding is usually correct.Ultimately, it's good to remember that the messages in our dreams are there for our benefit. They're the way our subconscious mind makes us pay attention to things we may be avoiding in our conscious lives. "Very often the ego enlightens the sleeper of some material thing for his own benefit, which he may use advantageously in his waking state, but as he generally looks at the phenomena of dreams as an hallucination of the brain, he allows many a golden opportunity to slip through his fingers because the materialist's brain cannot grasp things of the spirit." Don't let that be you.

Seriously. I feel like these characters, this place, this family, has been part of me for so long now that with each new installment or in this case bridge book, I fall more and more in love with them. Leveled came as a huge surprise as you already know and I honestly couldn’t believe that Lando and Dom were getting a book, much less a book about THEM! TOGETHER!!! Holy WOW is what kept playing over and over in my mind. I honestly did not know what to expect as this is Jay Crownover’s first M/M book and one that is so closely tied to a beloved series.Leveled exceeded my expectations. It made me fall for two broken men who found their way to each other. Two men that for two very different reasons were on the verge of losing it. One living in a his own personal hell and one who spent years after losing he love of his life utterly lost before being in a good place again. From the moment they met, the sexual tension and sizzling chemistry was there. And while this is a novella, it really felt like a full-length novel. It never felt rushed, the reluctant relationship was given plenty of time to develop and eventually explode. But what I think I loved most, besides Dom and Lando of course, was that even though it was tied to The Marked Men series, with most of the characters making an appearance and at times a prominent one, it felt like a completely new book, which it is, but I don’t know how to better explain it.Leveled is truly the perfect bridge between the end of The Marked Men series and the beginning of the Saints of Denver series. Ms. Crownover brought the angst, the troubled leading man, or men, the romance, the hot, hot sex, and a story to back it all up. “Two boys kissing” well done Jay Crownover! I wholeheartedly approve!

By Sinfully "We all need a hero...let the Saints of Denver begin…”Leveled is essentially the start of Jay Crownover’s new series entitled Saints of Denver. I am a hardcore fan of this author’s Marked Men series and was so excited to discover that we’d be getting whole new series loosely tied to it. All the Marked boys wove their way into my heart and I love their “merry band of misfits” wholeheartedly so I am ecstatic to get more from Ms. Crownover. This novella is the first M/M venture by this author and while it can certainly be read as a stand-alone romance I think that this book was written for fans of the Marked Men series, those that are looking forward to the new series. Ms. Crownover has written this novella as a bridge between the old and new, the Marked Men series and the Saints of Denver series.“Lando and Dom are the perfect mix of old and new, the perfect combo of then and now.”The timeframe of this novella and the remainder of the books in the Saints of Denver series will take place in the space of time between the end of Asa and the Epilogue found in the same book (the last book in the Marked Men series). If you have yet to experience a Jay Crownover book, this would be a great introduction to her writing world.“LEVELED.Laid out.Knocked sideways.Flattened and collapsed.Breathless and stunned.”Orlando Frederick (aka. Lando) is someone who readers of the Marked Men know about. We know that he was the “secret” boyfriend of Remy Archer (Rule’s brother) and that most of Remy’s family and friends had no idea that he existed or that Remy was even gay until it was too late. Time has moved forward since Remy was in Lando’s life and he’s taken on a successful career as a physical therapist where he has made it his mission to help everyone from those suffering from sports injuries to wounded war veterans and other survivors. Despite his success and fulfilling career, the loss of Remy has marked Lando irrevocably. So, when a gruff sexy police officer becomes his client, Lando has no idea what to do about the instantaneous attraction and connection the he feels. He’s not sure if he could ever venture down the path of love and lust with yet another stubborn man. After all, he hasn’t even recovered from the first time.Dominic Voss is police officer with the Denver Police Department and he’s also the best friend of Royal Hastings (the heroine from Asa, the last book in the Marked Men series). Dom is all about his job so when he is severely injured in the line of duty all he can focus on is getting his body back to peak physical condition so he can get back to work. Royal pulls some strings and manages to get Dom in to see Lando, who has a wait list a mile long. For the first time since his injury, Dom is optimistic that he’ll actually be able to mend his body with Lando’s help and no-holds-barred approach. What Dom does not expect is to want more with the gorgeous physical therapist. Will both men take the plunge and cross professional boundaries?This author definitely delivered when it came to the execution of this book. The storyline is both sad and sweet, dealing with coming to grips with the past and beautifully intertwining it with a tender romance. It’s about letting go and embracing life because if you are able to grab hold of that second chance, you may just find a once in a lifetime kind of love....a love that may have always been there to begin with. Neither Lando nor Dom were expecting their reaction to one another which was so absolutely visceral and primitive. It was, however, something that could not be ignored. Lando set out to be an integral part in healing Dom so that he could get back to his work as a police officer but it turned out the Dom played an integral role in his healing as well. Both had wounds that needed attention. The overall story arc turned out to be nothing like I expected and true to her wonderful and unique writing style, this author throws in a few angsty and emotional moments effortlessly threading together a beautiful story about taking a chance once again and finally being able to fully open your heart and love unconditionally.All and all, I think that Jay Crownover accomplished what she set out to do with Leveled. This was a wonderful start to the Saints of Denver series and it was also a novella that served as closure when it came to Remy’s story which was a loose thread from the Marked Men series. By Cheshire Cat 'Leveled' is a crossover novella between the end of the 'Marked Men' series and the beginning of the 'Saints of Denver' series. The main feature is the relationship between Orlando Frederick and Dominic Voss, both of whom were introduced and played small but memorable roles in a few of the Marked Men books. But this is the first time these boys are meeting. What makes this a crossover book is that we get cameos from many of the couples from the Marked Men series, but also a final glimpse at Sayer and Zeb who will be featured in the first Saints of Denver book. But 'Leveled' can be read as a standalone.I really enjoyed 'Leveled'. Now I will admit, the M/M romance genre is not my thing. I would not have read this if I hadn't already been a huge fan of the 'Marked Men' series and Jay Crownover. With that said, I will be honest and say that I skimmed or skipped the sexier portions of the book. But this did not diminish the story for me. I genuinely liked Lando and Dom. I liked how the difficulties in their personal lives were explored and dealt with (which in Lando's case was quite welcome, as it was a long time in coming). I liked getting to know them. I felt their connection and chemistry to be genuine. And despite being a novella, I still felt that I got the complete picture of this love story between Dom and Lando. And the bonus was seeing many of the past characters and a glimpse of the future. I was initially hesitant on reading 'Leveled,' but I'm glad I took a chance on it. Now I'm definitely looking forward to the 'Saints of Denver' series.

You end up standing and cheering as she allows the characters to 'figure life out.' Read it and then any other book you can find from this author. Hallmark has been running Cedar Cove, and has made 2 movies starring Doris Roberts. Great!

Maxwell The Vietnam War was a trying and humbling experience for the United States. The emotions it provokes run the entire gambit. Seeing what it was like in the heat of battle through the eyes of a corpsman who has to patch up and try to save the lives of wounded Marines brings the reality home. The story tells the good, bad and ugly experiences of a single search and destroy operation. Be there without having to chance taking a bullet. Read how one corpsman maintained his humanity, sanity and faith through the hell of war. The author came away from it a stronger instead of broken young man.

By Amazon Customer This book is a must read for anyone who had a relative or friend serving in Viet Nam. It will help you to better understand why so many service men came back withdrawn and mentally different and not wanting to discuss what they saw or had to do. I know it helped me. I usually do not read war novels but this is more than that. It is also a moving story of faith and friendship and I am very glad that I read it.

The truck was now pointed back the way he'd come, but he'd somehow managed to stay out of the roadside ditch. He rested his forehead on the steering wheel and let out a long breath. "Thank You, God."The hospital room where he'd spent so many months in traction as a teenager flashed through his mind. It would be sixteen years this February since a terrible snowmobile accident had taken a friend's life and left fifteen-year-old Benjamin with a body so broken that doctors didn't know at first if he'd ever walk again. Since then, he'd built a successful business as an extreme sports instructor and even used the lingering notoriety as a platform to teach thousands of young people about outdoor safety and living life to the fullest.Now his business was successfully sold. She'd said yes.But the weather forecast was pretty much as bad as the holidays could be. His deep blue eyes glanced at the console clock. It was quarter to four. It was a seven-hour drive from here back to his sister's place on Manitoulin Island, the home he had shared with her. At this rate, he'd be driving well into the night."See, dog, Meg and Jack are getting married on Christmas Eve, which is the day after tomorrow." Maybe talking out loud would calm both the husky and himself. "Sounds like your Christmas will be exciting, too. Our friend Piper is hosting a huge Christmas Eve thing."Our friend Piper. He scratched his trim brown beard. Why did it feel weird to call Piper Lawrence a "friend"? But he couldn't think of a better term to call her. The second to last week of August, he'd just looked up over the counter one day and saw Piper there in the doorway. A mess of tumbling dark hair, plaid shirt worn over jean shorts, sparkling eyes behind huge, round glasses. The dog had charged her instantly, tail wagging. Puppy love at first sight.She'd had just four days on the island and only been there to escort her aunt. But there'd been this glint in her eyes that told him she could use an adventure. So, he'd done his best to find her one. Together they'd gone hiking, boating, parasailing and waterskiing. Sure seemed like a friendship. Good one, too. Had a lot of goodbyes to get through and you're my last stop—""Hang on. The signal's patchy. I'm just carrying some Christmas decorations down to the barn. I was going to wait until after you'd left. But I didn't expect you to be so late and now the storm is getting worse." There was the crunch of footsteps. He heard the sound of a door creaking and the dull sound of stomping. "Now when—"A loud bang shook the air.He heard the clatter of her cell phone hitting the floor.Then the muffled sound of someone screaming."Piper? Piper! Hey? You okay?" The phone went dead.A shiver shot down his spine. He hit Redial. The call didn't go through. The dog growled."Don't worry. She probably just got startled by something and dropped her phone."He hoped. The hill was in desperate need of both plowing and sanding. Even with snow tires it might've been better to wait for Piper at the house.He tried the phone one more time. Still, no answer.Below, the barn door opened and someone walked out. Didn't look like Piper. No, this was a big, wide, grizzly bear of a man. The man was dragging something behind him. He hoisted it onto his shoulders, took a few shaky steps across the snow and then dropped it.Not it. Her.The man was dragging a woman's body out onto the lake.Benjamin's heart stopped cold.She started thrashing, flailing and kicking out against her attacker.Piper!Piper was fighting for her life down on that ice. Maggie fills her stories with faith woven into them like a tapestry. I loved it and I know you will too.Benjamin Duff is about to take off on his dream to boat around the world for charity. He was once severely injured and because of his injury his sister suffered from an anxiety disorder. He felt he owed her to stay close but in just a few days she would marry the love of her life. Benjamin was free. Now he just needed to drop off his dog to his friend's bed and breakfast, attend the wedding, and catch his plane to Australia.Piper Lawrence has taken over her aunt and uncle's Bed and Breakfast to try to get it into a profitable business. "Christmas at the Downs" has been an annual event that she hoped would bring the business back to life. Her aunt is suffering some mysterious disease and her husband has taken her to an assisted living facility. Piper wanted to bring them home.Benjamin calls when he is close to the Downs but hears Piper being attacked. He rushes to save her only to crash his truck. Caught in a terrible snow storm without power, they find someone has sabotaged the generator. Benjamin is able to keep her from being killed but the killer is searching for someone and something. Could these two find what this man is looking for before he destroy them or the B&B? Benjamin's time is running out and the attacks are only getting stronger. They soon find out that God has a plan and if they can just trust Him He will work it out for them. God always has a plan and it so much greater than anything you ever imagined

I can seriously relate to a woman who only sees misshapen blobs without her glasses on. I'd love Piper just for that endearing fact, but there's so much more that makes her a winning heroine in my book. Dedication and loyalty to family for one. A giving nature. The steely determination to overcome whatever obstacle is placed in her path. Not to mention her keen sense of self-preservation. It's no wonder Benjamin is drawn to her at a time when he can't possibly be. They are set on two difference paths -- destined to be continents and oceans apart. So not the time for romance! The plot is all a suspense lover could want -- twisty and turny and convoluted. The real keep-you-on-your-toes-until-the-very-end kind. I did not have a clue regarding some things. Not. A. Clue. Made for a voracious reading spell. Good luck putting this one down before you've reached the last page!

By Marple The story was full of mystery and intrigue but there were times I thought it was a little too wordy. Too many words instead of letting go and giving the reader time to think on their own to gather thoughts. I often wonder how the really good writers know when to stop feeling the need to explain and let the unknowns be solved by the reader as the story ends. It lets the reader gather the clues and makes for a more fun read.

By Meganb28 recently came across some acne problems for the first time in my life. I was a little lost because it doesn't really run in my family. I needed a good resource for this problem so I checked out amazon and came across this book. It was very helpful in describing the condition to me and giving me some tips on managing. As a girl it's sometimes hard to have something that hurts your looks if you know what I mean :) I have since been a lot better about prevention. I recommend you check this book out for some good tips..
