Paddy Quinn, the boy who ate rattlesnakes, and lost a hand to a cannon blast during the Mexican War, returns as a famous Civil War correspondent and battlefield sketch artist in James Alexander Thom's new novel, Fire in the Water. The central action in this novel is the tragic explosion and burning of the paddlewheel steamboat SULTANA near Memphis in the last days of the Civil War, killing some 1,800 homebound Yankee survivors of the hellish Andersonville prisoner-of-war camp in Georgia. But the undercurrent of the novel is the national mourning for assassinated President Lincoln, whose corpse was en-route on his funeral train to Springfield, Illinois at the time of the disaster.

I learn a great deal about the history of our country, such as in this case about the greatest maritime disaster in all of histyory and I learned more about life after the civil war and feelings of the people about Lincoln'ts assisination.

The Civil War is nearly over, and President Lincoln has just been assassinated. The steamboat Sultana is transporting nearly 2,000 Union soldiers up the Mississippi River to their homes in the north. The soldiers are former prisoners of the infamous Andersonville prison camp, and most are extremely sick from malnutrition and disease. Famous war correspondent Paddy Quinn is on board interviewing the prisoners for an upcoming story he intends to write. Just north of Memphis, the ship explodes, killing nearly 1,800 people, most of them former prisoners. Paddy and one of the former prisoners, Robbie Macombie, struggle to survive together in the river while vowing to attend President Lincoln's funeral, the man they both idolize."Fire in the Water" is one of the best novels I've ever read. It was a moving and emotional story, with a unique cast of characters. Mr. Thom did a brilliant job in researching and writing this story. It's one of his best.
