A new Conscience and an Ancient Evil, by Jane Addams

About the Author Jane Addams (1860 – 1935) was a pioneer settlement worker, founder of Hull House in Chicago, public philosopher, sociologist, author, and leader in woman suffrage and world peace. Beside presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, she was the most prominent reformer of the Progressive Era and helped turn the nation to issues of concern to mothers, such as the needs of children, public health, and world peace. She said that if women were to be responsible for cleaning up their communities and making them better places to live, they needed the vote to be effective in doing so. Addams became a role model for middle-class women who volunteered to uplift their communities. She is increasingly recognized as a member of the American pragmatist school of philosophy. In 1931 she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

A harrowing look at so-called "white slavery" among immigrants By Chrissy the Stooges Woman Published in 1912 on the heels of Twenty Years at Hull-House and at the height of Jane Addams's popularity, "A New Conscience and an Ancient Evil" assesses the vulnerability of the rural and immigrant working-class girls who moved to Chicago and fell prey to the sexual bartering of what was known as the white slave trade.Addams offers lurid accounts--drawn from the records of Chicago's Juvenile Protection Association--of young women coerced into lives of prostitution by men who lurked outside hotels and sweatshops. Because they lacked funds for proper recreation, Addams argues, poor and socially marginalized women were susceptible to sexual slavery, and without radical social change they would perhaps be "almost as free" as young men.In addition to promoting higher wages and better living conditions, Addams suggests that a longer period of public education for young women would deter them from the dangers of city life. Despite its appeal to middle-class readers eager for tales of sexual excess and the rape of innocence, the press and prominent intellectuals criticized A New Conscience and an Ancient Evil for being disproportionately hysterical to its philosophical weight.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. sweet story By paula legate The story line was good. Hebe liked her boss Nick. They spent one steamy night together. Hebe had stars in her eyes thinking it was love. Nick acted like a jerk the next day, and Hebe walked away. I did like that Nick figured out Hebe was pregnant 6 weeks later, and it was Hebe who was shocked. Nick was a jerk at the beginning of the story but he came around. This ended up to be a very sweet book, with some twist and turns along the way. I wasn’t drawn to the characters the way I had hoped I would be. The story itself didn’t feel real. If you like a good romantic fantasy, then I’m sure you will enjoy this one.

The autobiographical book You’ve Got to Have the Guts is the moving account of a quest for happiness. Esther Radstaak-Brookman (1967) was diagnosed with a germ cell tumor at the age of twelve. After two years of serious illness she healed.

These days Esther is a pharmacist assistant, married and has a healthy daughter. When her daughter was almost twelve, all the traumatic experiences that Esther had to endure when she was young emerged more vividly than ever. Due to all the emotional trauma she lost grip on life and alienated herself. As a last resort she looked for professional help. In a long-term psychotherapy with dozens of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) sessions, she finally rediscovered herself.

This book will help parents deal with their grief and emotions. Doctors and nurses have the opportunity to see themselves through the eyes of a child. But the most valuable is that people with similar traumatic experiences can draw courage from Esther’s final victory.

Esther Radstaak is married, has one daughter and works as a pharmacist assistant. She has been involved as a volunteer with the Association of Parents, Children and Cancer, participates in scientific research into the late effects of childhood cancer and is frequently in the news.

'A confrontational, but also uplifting book. It gives a good insight in the deep valleys cancer can cause in a lifetime. Highly recommended!' - Prof.Dr. H. Vanderwiel -

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. THE DEVELOPER OF EMBRYOLOGY SUMMARIZES EVOLUTION, PARTICULARLY WITH RESPECT TO MAN By Steven H Propp Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) was a German biologist and philosopher, who helped popularize Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, and also wrote books such as The Riddle of the Universe. He wrote in the first chapter of this 1874 book, "it is an astonishing fact that the science of the evolution of man does not even yet form part of the scheme of general education... [most] 'educated' people do not know that every human being is developed from an egg, or ovum, and that this egg is one simple cell... They are equally ignorant that in the course of the development ... there is first formed a body that is totally different from the human frame, and has not the remotest resemblance to it." (Pg. 1)He adds, "These two branches of our science---on the one side ontogeny or embryology, and on the other side phylogeny, or the science of race-evolution---are most vitally connected... This is ... most clearly and correctly expressed in the comprehensive law which I have called 'the fundamental law of organic evolution,' or 'the fundamental law of biogeny.' This general law... may be briefly expressed in a phrase: 'The history of the fetus is a recapitulation of the history of the human race'; of, in other words, 'Ontogeny is a recapitulation of phylogeny.'" (Pg. 2)He asserts, "If all living things come from a common root, man must be included in the general scheme of evolution. On the other hand, if the various species were separately created, man, too, must have been created, and not evolved. We have to choose between these two alternatives. This cannot be too frequently or too strongly emphasized. EITHER all the species of animals and plants are of supernatural origin... as religion teaches; OR the different species have been evolved from a few common, simple ancestral forms, and in that case man is the highest fruit of the tree of evolution." (Pg. 30)He suggests, "As the human embryo does not essentially differ... when we already perceive the cerebral vesicles, the eyes, ears, gill-arches, etc.---from the similar forms of the other higher mammals, we may confidently assume that they agree in the earliest embryonic processes, segmentation and formation of germinal layers. This has not yet, it is true, been established by observation.... However... no reasonable man will doubt but that the segmentation and formation of layers are the same in both cases." (Pg. 60)He observes, "All the peculiarities that distinguish the various groups of animals from each other only appear gradually in the course of embryonic development... We may formulate this phenomenon in a definite law... This is the law of the ontogenetic connection of related animal forms. It runs: The closer the relation of two fully-developed animals in respect to their whole bodily structure, and the nearer they are connected in the classification of the animal kingdom." (Pg. 157-158)He states, "From this anatomic structure of the human tail it is perfectly clear that it is the rudiment of an ape-tail, the last hereditary relic of a long hairy tail, which has been handed down from our tertiary primate ancestors to the present day." (Pg. 160) He later admits, however, that "The recapitulation of phylogeny by ontogeny is only fairly complete in a few cases, and is never whole complete." (Pg. 208)He concludes, "the older idea of the immortality of the human soul is scientifically untenable. Death puts an end, in man as in any other vertebrate, to the physiological function of the cerebral neurona... the collective activity of which is known as 'the soul.'" (Pg. 280) He adds, "The resistance to the theory of a descent from the apes is clearly due in most men to feeling rather than to reason... because it hurts man's aesthetic complacency and self-ennoblement... most men would rather have as parent of the race a sinful and fallen Adam than an advancing and vigorous ape... Personally, the notion of ascent is more congenial to me than that of descent. It seems to me a finer thing to be the advanced offspring of a simian ancestor, that has developed progressively from the lower animals... than the degenerate descendant of a god-like being, made from a clod, and fallen for his sins, and an Eve created from one of his ribs." (Pg. 352-353)For those interested in the history and development of evolutionary thought, this book will be of interest.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. More an essay than a book. By Ken I expected this to be a complete look into the evolution of man, but instead it was a very concise explanation of the relationship between the development of a human embryo and the evolutionary history of man. Not what I expected, but very well done.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. This is definitely worth a listen By A Customer This tape describes a process of inner work that I think has great potential. One basis of this process is that the author, who experienced serious abuse as a child, feels most "talk therapy" has limited value, and that instead of going to a therapist (or, in addition to, optionally), this process has the ability to *truly* and permanently heal your past. This is something you can do by yourself at home, easily. At times, particularly during the beginning, the tape may seeme rudimentary (inner child, trauma, unconscious mind, etc.), but on the other hand it's very comprehensive and is a necessary foundation, and plenty more awaits. Later, the power of the tape comes through. She describes a "meditative" (for lack of a better word) process which is the core of the tape, but she includes a LOT of other techniques, processes, strategies, viewpoints, visualizations, etc. She does not shy away from the spiritual domain, fortunately. I have just added this to my regular meditation time, and so far think it has great value. Anyone familiar with Victor Sanchez's (Teachings of Castaneda) "recapitulation" process will find this familiar, as I did, but this is an easier (no special equipment), much more deeply developed process here. Anyone wanting to develop (or add to) a regular practice of self-healing or spiritual "work" should buy this tape.

It gave me alot of insight and helped me to see me for me. It changed my life! This book is proven effective, the exercises are helpful and makes it not as painful as we think it will be. I say this is great therapy! If you want it, it's a great start!
