THE 1889 VIENNA LAW SOCIETY LECTURE ON “ETHICS” By barryb THE 1889 VIENNA LAW SOCIETY LECTURE ON “ETHICS”Brentano wrote his foundational work: “Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint” in 1874.He then later compiled his “DESCRIPTIVE PSYCHOLOGY LECTURES” from 1887-1891; in order to clarify the previous work.He then later gave this lecture on “ETHICS” to the Vienna Law Society in 1889, published in 1902; in order to clarify his previous work – again. In other words, as with any great scholar, we have an “evolving-thought-process”.This essay also includes another minor essay on “forming judgments” that also provides helpful insight into Brentano’s position. For the price; you cannot go wrong. Hopefully you are addressing these works in their proper order. This essay is absolutely essential for clarification. His position is Aristotle, of course; and includes the Greek KALOS, or “moral commendability”. And “KALOKAGATHEIA”, or “nobility”. From these “foundational-moral-concepts”; he addresses their internalization as a ”reference-of-superiority”. He does this by expanding on his key notion of “PROTEROSIS” (PROTER-AISTHESIS) ; which encloses: IDEAS, JUDGMENTS, & EMOTIONAL DESIRE. This leads to his ethical positing of the notion of “PSYCHICAL-ADDING” as the key to his ethics. 5 stars for the “Father-of-Phenomenology”.
