Singleton's stirring examination of the unusual Calloustown residents is filled with fresh, surprising, and striking descriptions that are at once sweet, odd, sad, and humorous. In "These Deep Barbs Irremovable," large-breasted Adazee is described as having a "scoliosistic future teeming with greedy chiropractors and hyperbolic support-brassiere manufacturers." This and similar descriptions of characters rife with flaws, and a town so dismal that "General Sherman swerved away" because "he didn't see it fit to waste fire on," endear them to the reader and make the town charming in its own way. About the Author George Singleton is the author of two novels and seven short story collections, including Between Wrecks and Stray Decorum. A 2013 SIBA Book Award Finalist, his work has appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, and Playboy. A former Guggenheim Fellow, he was awarded the Hillsdale Award for Fiction by The Fellowship of Southern Writers in 2011. He teaches writing at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC.

This particular collection finds him at the height of his gifts, with stories that bend but never break, travel roads that always find a way home, and wind up evoking worlds that you'll wish were your own.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another Great Collection from a Master Storyteller By Peter A. Moore This is a brilliant collection from one of the great Southern writers. There is humor, for which he is famous, but the stories are also poignant and colorful, and Singleton manages to mix the pain of poverty and family dysfunction with the warmth and unhidden beauty of struggling people in our midst. George Singleton helps us laugh at ourselves and the futile situations we create, and he shows us how to love the unlovable and to understand their dilemma. I often give his books to those who are condescending and demeaning toward the unsophisticated, poorly educated, and striving in their community, in hopes that they'll come away with a deeper sense of the goodness and the pain in all of us. The stories are entertaining, for certain, and earthy, but they also subtly convey the sinister, stark reality of the human spirit underneath the surface, much like the undertow in a sparkling, inviting surf.
