In her first story collection in over eight years, National Book Award winner Ellen Gilchrist presents readers with ten different scenarios in which people dealing with forces beyond their control somehow manage to survive, persevere, and triumph, even if it is only a triumph of the will. From the very young to the very old, in one way or another, they are fighters and believers, survivors who find the strength to go on when faced with the truth of their mortality. And they are given vivid life in these stories told with Ellen Gilchrist’s clear-eyed optimism and salty sense of humor. “Reading Ellen Gilchrist is addictive . . . Her new work is filled with good people who show fortitude and even heroism under duress . . . In this age of edgy irony, her warm-hearted view of humanity is refreshing.” —NPR.org “Gilchrist manages to cut through the loud tussle of the world to present truths made even more striking by how conventional they are . . . The stories in Acts of God are great postcards from the world of Ellen Gilchrist. It’s a world of war and strife and surprises, and it is, yes, marvelous to behold.” —The New York Times Book Review   “Refreshing, engaging, and inspiring.” —Library Journal                                     “Beautiful, smart, phenomenally rich.”—Booklist, starred review   “Gilchrist is at her best when the wry and satirical mood strikes her, especially when she is pricking the balloons of pride that the white Southern upper middle class inflates in its own honor . . . The best of the stories in Acts of God rank with the best in her first collection and in her second, Victory Over Japan, for which she was awarded a richly deserved National Book Award.” —The Washington Post    “The salty wit of [her] characters will make you laugh; their bravery can be breathtaking.”—Birmingham magazine

Acts of God, by Ellen Gilchrist

From Booklist *Starred Review* Gilchrist will remain forever beloved for Victory over Japan (1984), her National Book Award–winning collection of short stories. Many outstanding novels have been added to her oeuvre over the years, but Gilchrist’s deliciously wise and humorous voice abides best in the short story form, and her new collection of 10 stories will say to her fans that their reconnection to this openhearted writer from the South is a pure old-home-week experience (especially given that recurring Gilchrist characters make welcome appearances). A thematic connection unifies the stories, which generally reflect recent national events and current social and political conditions that put individuals’ moxie to the test. For instance, “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,” a beautiful, smart, phenomenally rich story, sees three middle-aged women, former college buddies, off to a vacation in Italy, but they are sidelined along the way by terrorist activity; in post-Katrina New Orleans in the title story, an elderly couple’s last effort at independence from caretakers and infirmities has fatal results, but after their deaths, their youngest son creates an elaborate family tree celebrating life over death. Gilchrist has no interest in soap-box preaching or, for that matter, in sentiment. It’s character exploration she seeks, pure and simple. --Brad Hooper

Review

“[Gilchrist’s] style can be an acquired taste. If I were you, I’d acquire it . . . Gilchrist manages to cut through the loud tussle of the world to present truths made even more striking by how conventional they are . . . The stories in Acts of God are great postcards from the world of Ellen Gilchrist. It’s a world of war and strife and surprises, and it is, yes, marvelous to behold.” ―The New York Times Book Review“Admirers of her work, among whom I am most certainly to be counted, will find much herein that is familiar and pleasing . . . Gilchrist is at her best when the wry and satirical mood strikes her, especially when she is pricking the balloons of pride that the white Southern upper middle class inflates in its own honor. Now in her late 70s, she has lost none of the zing that brought In the Land of Dreamy Dreams to such wholly unexpected attention, and it’s a pleasure to report that the best of the stories in Acts of God rank with the best in her first collection and in her second, Victory Over Japan, for which she was awarded a richly deserved National Book Award in 1984.” ―The Washington Post“Flawlessly precise.” ―ReadersDigest.com“Reading Ellen Gilchrist is addictive . . . Partly, it's the sassy voice that snares you, and partly it's her tight circle of recurrent characters--feisty, unabashedly sexed Southern women, many of whom are related by birth or marriage . . . Her new work is filled with good people who show fortitude and even heroism under duress . . . In this age of edgy irony, her warm-hearted view of humanity is refreshing.” ―NPR.org“A joy to read. Her protagonists all feel very alive and real.” ―Bust“[Gilchrist’s] protagonists are generally beautiful and strong, sometimes shallow and often deeply flawed--but they’re always interesting, especially when they’re tested . . . In Acts of God, though, they learn a lesson that Gilchrist’s characters often don’t: that even the rich and the powerful, the quick-witted and the good-looking are vulnerable to storms and disasters, to illness and aging and death . . . These 10 new stories remind the reader we’re all vulnerable to chance, whether it’s a hurricane or a love affair. And these characters, the old ones and the new, settle seamlessly into Gilchrist’s seductive Southern world.” ―Houston Chronicle “The stories are laced through with good humor and hints of the miraculous . . . There is something--a magic that’s difficult to clarify, that may be corny in someone else’s eyes--to Gilchrist’s work that doesn’t come around often . . . Gilchrist still has the power to turn a simple line into a profound insight on what it’s like to be human. Aging and death are the twin ghouls running throughout Acts of God, looming over the characters, and the result of looking into the void gives these stories wisdom and compassion, or to quote Gilchrist: ‘Glad to be alive in the only world there is, alive and eating and still breathing and not afraid really of anything that might happen next.’” ―Flavorpill.com  “Gilchrist’s deliciously wise and humorous voice abides best in the short story form, and her new collection of 10 stories will say to her fans that their reconnection to this openhearted writer from the South is a pure old-home-week experience . . . Beautiful, smart, phenomenally rich.” ―Booklist (starred review)

From the Inside Flap

The human race. You have to love it and wish it well and not preach or think you have any reason to think you are better than anyone else. Amen. Good-bye. Peace . . .Master short story writer Ellen Gilchrist, winner of the National Book Award, returns with her first story collection in over eight years. In Acts of God, she has crafted ten different scenarios in which people dealing with forces beyond their control somehow manage to survive, persevere, and triumph, even if it is only a triumph of the will. For Marie James, a teenager from Fayetteville, Arkansas, the future changes when she joins a group of friends in their effort to find survivors among the debris left when a tornado destroys a neighboring town. For Philipa, a woman blessed with beauty and love and a life without care, the decision she makes to take control of her fate is perhaps the easiest she has ever made. As she writes to Charles, her husband and lifetime partner, Nothing is of value except to have lived well and to die without pain. For Eli Naylor, left orphaned by a flood, there comes an understanding that sometimes out of tragedy can come the greatest good, as he finds a life and a future in a most unexpected place. In one way or another, all of these people are fighters and believers, survivors who find the strength to go on when faced with the truth of their mortality, and they are given vivid life in these stories, told with Ellen Gilchrist s clear-eyed optimism and salty sense of humor. As a critic in the Washington Post wrote in reviewing one of the author s earlier works, To say that Ellen Gilchrist can write is to say that Placido Domingo can sing. All you have to do is listen."

Tales of Survival By Sarah-Hope Ellen Gilchrist’s short story collection, Acts of God, is a quick, interesting read that will leave you with lots to turn over in your mind. The characters in these stories face, as the title suggests, acts of God: floods, hurricanes, and smaller, but equally unnerving disasters. These characters aren’t heroic in any grand sense. They’re ordinary—sometimes irritatingly so—individuals faced with immense challenges outside their control. As the publisher’s write-up notes, these people “somehow manage to survive, persevere, and even triumph.”In so many permutations, this cast of characters and their ability to overcome could lead to unsatisfactory results: sacchrine or histrionic or just plain unbelievable. Gilchrist’s achievement is that she allows her characters to overcome while keeping them human. Some of their triumphs are small, but they ring true. And together these stories build a sense of hopefulness that feels more like realism than like wishful thinking. This is a good book to pick up when you’re feeling worn down, dissatisfied, and short on energy. It won’t transport you to any magical world—but it will make this world seem a bit less daunting.

The very best in a long time from one of the best By Marshall K Walker Ms. Gilchrist is at the top of her game in her most recent offering to the literate world. Many of these stories resonate with the collective desire for power over events that are larger than ourselves and Gilchrist's characters perform admirably, as usual. The economy of of her language which still drips honesty and humor is a rare gift, indeed increasingly so. The author knows her characters intimately and it is a rare joy to have them shared in such fashion. My favorite story by far was "Hopedale" for the wonderful insight into a world that has only recently vanished. Any person with an ear for a good story would do well to turn your phone off for many hours and devour this wonderful book.

It was supposed to be a simple proof of concept. The physics were sound. Over one hundred teleportation experiments had already been successfully performed...

Debate rages over whether the Reidier Test’s disastrous outcome resulted from human error, government conspiracy, or sabotage. No one has actual knowledge of the truth. But hidden from the public eye, there exists a government report commissioned from criminal psychologist Dr. Hilary Kahn, chronicling the events that took place.

Dr. Kahn disappeared without a trace.

Now her son Danny has unearthed and revealed the report, fueling controversy over the details of Reidier’s quest to reforge the fabric of reality and hold his family together. Exposed with little chance of finding his mother, Danny goes underground to investigate. But nothing can prepare him for what he discovers.

In this thrilling saga, a paradigm-shattering feat may alter humanity’s future as quantum entanglement and teleportation collide.

Admirable but Read Reviews First By JZS I always research upcoming new releases from Amazon imprints so I had already decided that “Here and There” was the only Kindle First I would be interested in for October. The description was interesting and I expected a sci fi/techno thriller. So I was concerned when I saw this listed as “Experimental” fiction. What the heck was that supposed to mean? I leave the literary reviews to those more qualified, this is just about deciding if it is something you want to try.So… what is experimental about this? Well, first the structure. Many recent books from Andy Weir’s “The Martian” to Jami Attenberg’s “Saint Maizie” tell their story with a combination of everything from journals to interviews, traditional third party/ past tense chapters to omniscient present tense. This is that structure on steroids. The premise is that the novel is really a large briefcase stuffed with materials accompanied by a very long cover letter. The case includes drafts of a psychological study by the mother, Hilary (think profiler, again on steroids), inserted notes and stories by the letter writer (her son Danny, a fine story teller), physics lectures, physics lectures disguised as short stories written by one of the characters, official transcripts of videos, the psychologist’s description of videos, official (redacted) documents and more. And many of these are inserted into others, which meant I was constantly having to go back to remind myself where I was before the interruption In addition, there are interactive footnotes and links. (Frankly, I recommend skipping those until the end or have the footnotes open on a second device. I had a terrible time getting back to the page from the footnotes) **This is a very dense, challenging read. The psychologist’s draft report, which is supposedly designed to be clear for laymen officials, reads more like a dissertation than a report for officials. It includes long, detailed descriptions and quotes of psychological theories (with extensive footnotes and links) backing up her analysis of characters and their actions- in every …single…. situation. There are also long detailed discussions, stories, explanations of and lectures on quantum theory and mechanics. Other topics include semiotics and cryptography. Many parts of the book read like a text book. So..like I said, challenging read. The story itself is near future sci fi/ techno thriller primarily revolving around a scientist's work in “teleportation”. It also develops into the story of the scientist Reider and his wife Eve and of Danny himself. You are able to detect a whiff of what is really going on fairly early. But really the background story is just that- a framework. It’s as though the author had hundreds of ideas, theories, anecdotes, stories (including a longish sci fi story at the end) and created the basic story around them.So what to say. Hmmm. Parts of this I liked a lot. (Everything above is a positive for me except the excessive academic citations and footnotes issue.) And I’m extremely impressed by the complex work the author created. But on the other hand I don’t really want the author’s effort to be the first thing I think of in a book. And all of that detail and constant side stories became excessive, undermining one thing I want in a book- a connection to the characters. So, I’m going with four stars but with a warning. If you are looking for a kick back, put up your feet afternoon read or thought the science in “The Martian” was too much, this probably isn’t for you. But if you want to commit to a spending a lot of time on complex read, enjoy a broad range of subjects with a lot of detail this can be an enjoyable project.ETA See comments. Amazon Customer advises that she didn't have any problem with the foot notes working. I read most of this on my kindle keyboard which is old. So the issue is probably my device and you may not have the problem.Second edit for clarity

For me, I loved it -- it's complicated but pretty brilliant. Basically the book reminds me a lot of "House of Leaves" as it presents two competing narratives: that of a brilliant physicist, Reidier, and his wife Eve in the main body of the story, and the travails of Danny, an anxiety-ridden son, and Hilary, Danny's psychologist mother, in the footnotes to the main text. The work is "compiled" by the actual author, Joshua Scher, who has received the mysterious package from his friend Danny. The story opens with the discovery by Danny of a top-secret US Government report prepared by Hilary concerning a disastrous event known as The Reidier Test. The test, performed by a Brown University quantum physicist named Kerek Reidier, resulted in the attempted teleportation and presumed death of Reidier's family and top government officials. Although paced and presented as a sci-fi thriller, the narrative in large part explores in romantic detail the love between Reidier and Eve, and their two unusual children, in the context of his devotion to a project that would permanently transform humankind. So basically I'd say HERE & THERE imagines the next advancements in teleportation in the frame of a love story -- can the atoms and energies that comprise people's bodies and "minds" be teleported and transferred successfully? In any event - read it to the very end, such as it is - there's a lot of provocative and nuanced detail in these last pages. I'm interested to see what others think and wonder if we've got a future sort of cult classic here.

Spine-tingling fun By KateE I found this to be a really unique and enjoyable read - the author has woven numerous voices into the narrative so the story unfolds from multiple perspectives, giving it a tense sense of realness. I was really drawn to the physicist and his family because it's a sweet love story, but don't get me wrong, it's not nearly that simple! This book also made my spine tingle with the unexpected occurrences and kept me reading late into the night to see what would happen next. The science seems very real (I have no idea!) which makes it all the more intriguing. Add this to your library you won't regret it!

Body Intelligence: Harness Your Body's Energies for Your Best Life, by Joseph Cardillo Ph.D.

Review “Body Intelligence could be subtitled: A User’s Manual for Surviving and Thriving on Planet Earth. Cardillo not only explains how we can manage and regulate our own personal energy but how we can use it to deal with life’s nuances. Drawing from science, quantum physics, ancient traditions and teachings as well as traditional Western and Eastern medicine, Cardillo makes a compelling case for a holistic approach to—well, everything, stating that you can work with and regulate your daily energies to increase the brilliance of all you do. Everyone who wants brilliance should read this book.” (Irene Conlan, MSN, PhD, creator of The Self Improvement blog and The Self Improvement radio show)“Joseph Cardillo’s Body Intelligence is the right book for our time exploring the new frontiers integrating the technologies of Western science with the new mind-body medicine that teaches us how to synchronize mind, body and spirit in daily practice.” (Ernest Rossi, PhD, and Kathryn Rossi, PhD, authors of Creating New Consciousness in Everyday Life)“Loaded with fascinating science and technology, Body Intelligence is a compelling, life changing approach to acquiring and maintaining your best physical and mental energy. Cardillo’s remarkable theory is a serious breakthrough in tapping the body-mind connection and is a must read for anyone wanting to live life at their full potential. You’ll never think about human energy the same again.” (Carl O. Helvie, RN, PhD, host of the Holistic Health Show and bestselling author of You Can Beat Lung Cancer)"Cardillo (Be like Water) tackles the mind/body connection with a book intended to help readers achieve a “vivid, brilliantly experienced life” by identifying and using the body’s energy sources. After discussing how energy affects one’s overall life, he segues into teaching readers how to identify their energy needs, sharing valuable insights and exercises for boosting alertness, personal strength, and memory, and reversing stress, aggressive feelings, and obsessive thinking. Mindfulness is at the heart of every chapter, as Cardillo identifies the power of emotional memory and explains how implicit memory combines with the flight-or-flight response without conscious effort. “Implicit memory can be dangerous when combined with a negative mood and rapid changes in your blood chemistry,” he warns. Cardillo gives readers reliable tools for addressing tough situations, including emptying one’s mind to eliminate stress, combining the energy of music and art with positive memories to improve one’s mood, and using what he terms power words to enhance memory and view stressful situations from a detached perspective. He also emphasizes that this isn’t a one-size-fits-all proposition; what works for one person might not for another. Written with an empowering and empathetic tone, Cardillo’s latest work is likely to join his earlier Be like Water on lists of mind/body classics." (Publishers Weekly (Starred Review))

Body Intelligence teaches you how to be wholly synced by using a “matter over mind” (or body over mind) approach. The author explains that our bodies are continuously influenced by many types of energy found all around us such as: light, sound, color, scent, words, memories, and that when we better understand these energies, we can tap into them to regulate our own energy up or down and anywhere between. Central to achieving this, is the daily practice of awareness- understanding our own energy rhythms, positive and negative influences, being mindful of energy sources around us and identifying which will produce the desired outcome. I’m finding that Cardillo's “matter over mind” method serves me quite well in comparison to pushing through my day with “mind over matter” philosophy. There’s a more natural flow to taking cues from the body and feeding it with the energy it needs. I found an abundance of tools in the book to positively impact daily living, deepen my experiences and help with life stressors (even migraine headaches). The chapter exercises and practices are great. It will be fun to make up pocket cards of my favorites. Body Intelligence is easy to read and hard to put down! It will surely be my new “Go To” as I learn to master energy flow.

By Janis Hill I would like to thank Beyond Words Publishing for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review.Being someone who has always strongly believed in the energy we gain from our surroundings, sights, smells, sounds, memories – I loved this book. From the initial introduction on what body intelligence is and our ‘mind, body and spirit’ approach to things, through to the different occasions focusing our body’s energies on improving us, it was a great read. Each chapter is a different ‘energy situation’ I guess you could say. It includes an example of someone in that situation, what they did to remedy it as well as some great guidance on how the reader could also benefit from similar actions. I did find myself looking forward to the “try this” moments within ‘Body Intelligence’.The layout was a little clunky and blocky for me and so was a bit slow to read at times. I’m more of a ‘wide open spaces’ type. It probably is a personal choice though. But it did make it come across as some pretty heavy reading. Though, saying that, I did still gain advice and guidance so it’s not such a bad thing.Would I recommend this book to others? Yes I would. I’m very much one for trying to improve your mood, life and health through changing how you look at a situation and react to something. I always seek the positive in both good and bad experiences. And I feel this book has some really good advice as to why this works. Don’t go for the energy drinks, sugary foods or expensive gimmicks. Just focus on how the situation makes you feel and turn your energy from draining to collecting.Would I buy this book for myself? Yes I would. I can see myself turning to specific chapters all the time to help me find a better mindset and improve where I’m finding myself. In summary: This is a terrific little text book on helping you learn about the energy we all have and how to benefit from it.

Energy, Feelings, Reactions and Controlling Them By YodaMom All around us is energy, we are energy, thoughts are energy, everything is energy, and energy attracts energy.Have you ever walked into a room or place and felt energized ? Maybe you have that favorite outfit that makes you feel powerful ? What about the blues, do you fins yourself in an unending pattern of unhappiness or anger. What if you could harness these energies, tweak them to work for you or at least to learn to manipulate them so they don't work against you. The author of this book details how to recognize and develop new patterns to harness and divert these energies. When I saw this book I admit I was thrilled to see a book on energies without some religious or mythical connection. I believe, I have seen many times in my life proof that this is a truth. There are places I go, where I get a strong sense of peace, strength, and melancholy. After reading this I was able to see what I was drawn to. I was naturally trying to balance myself without even knowing it. Yes, I had many "A ha' moments. I loved the memory recall exercise best. I was able to use several memories that evoked a feeling into my daily life pattern and side-step some quick draw reactions to frustrating situations. I avoided the anger, fear, jealousy, anxiety so simply. I also found the music energy section very helpful and changing some of my beats did change my energies. Living can be stressful or it can be something else. This book directs you how to turn it towards that something else. I'm working on implementing these tools and the many others into my daily life. The only problem I had with this was that some of it just went over my head in details. I had to re-read several sections very slowly to "get it" it was a new way of thinking and I'm not sure if it was the author or my mind patterns that made it a bit hard to read. Because I had to re-read it slowly and take notes even at some points I was able to look deeper at the process he was describing. Maybe it wasn't such a negative after all.

Best Ebook The Growing Spine: Management of Spinal Disorders in Young ChildrenFrom Springer

The second edition of The Growing Spine has been extensively revised to cover recent advances in knowledge and management. The book is intended as a comprehensive, one-stop reference for specialists and health professionals who care for young children with spinal deformities. In addition, it will effectively help to standardize the care of these patients. Depending on the etiology, children with spinal deformities are often cared for by multiple specialists, including pediatricians, pediatric orthopaedists or orthopaedic spine surgeons, neurologists, pediatric surgeons, pediatric neurosurgeons, oncologists, and pulmonologists. The multidisciplinary nature of care is reflected in The Growing Spine, which will be of value for all involved practitioners rather than just orthopaedic specialists. It will also be an ideal reference for nurses, physical therapists, and healthcare professionals in training, who are usually unfamiliar with spinal deformities in children.

Review

From the reviews:

“This text on the Pediatric Spine is a very good illustration of occult dysraphism, with anterior, esp; posterior instrumentation to correct kyphosis and scoliosis in young adults (10-14 yo). I recommend it for pediatricians and as supplementary reading for orthopaedic surgeons. The book has an international authorship which is another advantage.” (Joseph J. Grenier, Amazon.com, December, 2013)

“This is the first textbook entirely devoted to this topic. It is an international compilation of the current concepts of evaluation and treatment of deformities of the growing spine. … ‘The Growing Spine’ is an outstanding textbook that presents all the current knowledge about evaluation and treatment of spine deformities in young children. It will an essential tool for all the professionals involved in this field : pediatricians, pediatric spine surgeons, and ICU physicians, physical therapists.” (Pierre Kehr, European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology, Vol. 22, 2012)

“Spinal disorders that present at birth or arise soon thereafter are the ones that most threaten a person’s quality and duration of life. It is this … group that this unique, timely, and much-needed book focuses upon. … The book is directed at orthopedic surgeons … . It also will be useful to fellows and residents. … This is an outstanding contribution to our orthopedic surgical literature. … The information is current and the bibliography is well chosen, yet succinct.” (Samuel J. Chmell, Doody’s Review Service, March, 2011)

“This excellent multiauthored book … illustrates the whole spectrum of the pediatric disorders which may affect the growth of the spine, from the neonatal period to adolescence. … Altogether, the 50 chapters which make up the volume, all of them written in a concise and extremely didactic style, represent a unique reference source for the pediatric neurosurgeon willing to explore the field of spinal surgery … .” (Concezio Di Rocco, Child’s Nervous System, Vol. 27, 2011)

From the Back Cover

The second edition of The Growing Spine has been extensively revised to cover recent advances in knowledge and management, as documented in the significant body of literature published since the first edition. The book will serve as a comprehensive, one-stop reference for specialists and health professionals who care for young children with spinal deformities. In addition, it will effectively help to standardize the care of these patients.

While important progress has been achieved in the field of spinal disorders in very young children over the past two decades, the treatment of such conditions remains challenging owing to the age of the patients, the varying etiologies, and the progressive nature of the deformities. There also may be associated issues such as congenital anomalies, respiratory insufficiency, and neurologic problems. Depending on the etiology of the deformity, these children are often cared for by multiple specialists including pediatricians, pediatric orthopaedists or orthopaedic spine surgeons, neurologists, pediatric surgeons, pediatric neurosurgeons, oncologists, and pulmonologists.

This book is is written in a straightforward easy to understand manner. I recommend this book to families raising children with autism or other communication challenges. It is also a great resource for professionals who work with these families.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The best book I have seen on this subject By Matthew F “Let’s talk…” This simple statement is something everyone who has a child on the Autism Spectrum wishes they could hear from a trained and knowledgeable professional. You want a simple, straight-forward, and sincere discussion about what happens next. But this happens far, far too rarely. Usually the diagnosis comes with too little information, too much information, too technical information, or, even worse, a lot of really BAD information. And more often than not, bad information is the most common, and usually the loudest. The internet is awash with crackpot theories, diatribes, excuses, conspiracies, and fake “cures” that litter the landscape like emotional landmines. The simple truth is often hard to find. This is why “Let’s Talk…” is such a breath of fresh air. The title explains almost everything perfectly. It is a discussion more than anything else. The book is educated without being difficult to understand, it is straight-forward, without being too clinical. It is a discussion between experts and the parents to explain what this new facet of your child means, what you can do to help your child, what you can do to help yourself, and how you can better work together, because what really matters is that you both have some help to overcome some challenges that you might face. And the subtitle, “Navigating Communication Services and Supports…” is exactly that, a way to navigate through the multitude of voices, some honestly very good, but many terrible, that can explode in your face, like the emotional landmines referenced above. It is an opportunity to sit down with some exceptionally well qualified professionals and get some simple answers about what can be complex questions. In the end, you’re looking for some peace, some explanations, and for some compassionate understanding of the fears and concerns you have, and this book does an excellent job of explaining where to go from here.If you have an autistic child, or friends or family who have just had a child diagnosed with autism, this book is going to do more than help. It is going to comfort the parents, help the children, and help build a bridge between child, parent, and the potential services and opportunities open to them. I cannot recommend this highly enough. It can all be bewildering at first so why not sit down with some clearly exceptional experts and simply have a heart to heart talk?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. My new "go to" book for families! By Amazon Customer I can not say enough about this book, Rhea Paul and Donia Fahim are true autism experts! I have been a speech language pathologist working with children on the spectrum for more than 20 years. This book will be my new "go to" book for all of the families that I work with. It clearly details what autism is, the process of diagnosis, and educational services available to families. I really think that including a section about both traditional and non-traditional therapy options was brilliant. Families can use this book as a guide in navigating the overwhelming experience of having to decide on which treatment option is best for their child. I highly recommend this book to all professionals working with families with children on the spectrum.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Some beautiful writing, "noir" notwithstanding By L. Lamar I don't know much about the "noir" genre, but bought this anthology out of curiosity -- I know one of the authors.Started reading and could not put it down. Some exquisite, powerful writing, especially from two authors who are new to me: Sheree Renée Thomas and Cary Holladay. I'm thrilled that the publishers included a graphic short story, too, from Adam Shaw and Penny Register-Shaw. Sparsely expressed but incredibly evocative of a certain Memphis subculture, with a surprise ending."Memphis Noir" exceeded my expectations. I recommend this book for anyone who lives in Memphis; has lived in Memphis; wants to learn about Memphis; or just enjoys good storytelling.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Going Beyond Genre By Fran R. Robins Liben I bought Memphis Noir for the “noir” but everyone should read it for the evocative beauty of “The Never Never is Forever,” a very short graphic novel in this collection. I began the story anticipating the promised “noir” set in the Memphis “that only the locals know.” I wasn’t disappointed. The artist, Adam Shaw, using every shade of black and gray, sucks you right in to the smoky, oppressive Memphis night. The first page catapults you into a sleazy Memphis scene of cheap sex, cheap drugs and cheap rock ‘n roll. The reader is quickly immersed in a world of drugged out losers leeching off each other in a bleak “waste-opolis.” If that’s all it was, I would recommend this story as a piece of darn fine classic noir story-telling. But it is so much more than that. Go back and reread the first page. Packed into its scant 60 words you come across allusions to goth rock, Hindu mysticism, and H.P. Lovecraft. We are told that the booze-addled hero is a guitarist in a rock band called Shoggoth. Not merely a cool sounding moniker, Shoggoths were amorphous shape-shifters, originally lacking any consciousness, controlled by hypnotic suggestion. Over time they developed consciousness and independent minds. So, too, the guitarist. While this hauntingly written and drawn story appears at first blush to be plucked straight from the cynical noir genre, upon closer inspection it is something altogether different. It is, in fact, an achingly lovely tale of the power of love to make us see, to give us strength, and to empower us to choose our own destinies. It is a story, ultimately, about second chances. If that’s not the opposite of “noir” I don’t know what is.

He kept it in his memory just as he’d kept all the other mornings in the little over a year that had passed since their wedding.Afterward, when Morales described to me, in meticulous detail, everything that had happened at that last breakfast with Liliana, he didn’t go about it the way an ordinary person would. In general, people cobble together memories of their experiences from the hazy vestiges that have remained in their minds, or from fragments recalled from other, similar experiences, and with those vestiges and fragments they try to reconstruct circumstances or feelings they’ve lost forever. Not Morales.Because he felt that Liliana gave him happiness he wasn’t entitled to, happiness that had nothing to do with his life before he met her, and because the cosmos tends toward equilibrium, he knew he’d have to lose her sooner or later so that things could return to their proper order. All his memories of her were tinged with that sense of imminent disaster, of a catastrophe lying in wait around the corner.

California zookeeper Theodora Bentley travels to Iceland to pick up an orphaned polar bear cub destined for the Gunn Zoo’s newly installed Northern Climes exhibit. The trip is intended to be a combination of work and play. But on day two, while horseback riding near a picturesque seaside village, Teddy discovers a man lying atop a puffin burrow, shot through the head. The victim is identified as American bird-watcher Simon Parr, winner of the largest Powerball payout in history. Is Teddy a witness―or a suspect? Others include not only Parr’s wife, a famed suspense novelist, but fellow members of the birding club Parr had generously treated to their lavish Icelandic expedition. Hardly your average birders, several of them have had serious brushes with the law back in the States. Guessing that an American would best understand other Americans, police detective Thorvaald Haraldsson grudgingly concedes her innocence and allows Teddy to tag along with the group to volcanoes, glaciers, and deep continental rifts in quest of rare bird species. But once another member of the club is murdered and a rockfall barely misses Teddy’s head, Haraldsson forbids her to continue. She ignores him and, in a stunning, solitary face-off with the killer in Iceland’s wild interior, concludes an investigation at once exotic, thrilling, and rich in animal lore.

By Janis Hill I would like to thank Poison Pen Press for an ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review. An enjoyable cosy crime/ mystery book set in Iceland – a country I’ve always wanted to visit so enjoyed the literary scenery.Despite what I’m about to say below, I really did enjoy this book, found it a good read and do hope my very minor criticisms will be seen for what they are. This was a good book brought down by editing and continuity issues. In some ways ‘The Puffin of Death’ deserved a slightly higher score than what I gave. If I did half scores it would definitely have gotten three and a half, closer to a four. However, it had continuity issues that had me score it lower than it possibly deserved. And I only say that, as this was an ARC and I do prey these minor issues were sorted out in the final edit before publishing. And I’m not talking about the smattering of typos through-out the book; I am the typo queen so never lower the score I give a book for those. But when things started to be repeated in the book as if they’d not been mentioned before – like growling puffins seen at the first death scene forgotten until our protagonist returns to the same location and they growl at her… again, but for the first time! There were two or three other moments where it was a rehash – almost word for word – of what had already been said earlier in the book, and yet it was treated as if it had never been mentioned. As much as I would have liked to ignore such issues - as an ARC issue isn’t the final product - it did get grating the more often it happened and so did affect my end score. Please note this is all said as constructive criticism! I’m not bagging the book or the author’s ability, simply explaining why I wasn’t as in love with the book as I’d hoped. We won’t even go into ‘The Puffin of Death’ being about the fourth book in a series I’d not read before. I blame myself, the reader, to have made a choice to read it out of sync. It’s not something I usually relish doing, but I did find it an enjoyable and easy enough read to not feel I needed to have read the whole series to know who was who and what was going on. That is some good writing – writing part of a series but allowing it to be open enough for someone new to adventures to feel right at home, not as if they’ve come in mid-conversation and feel they’re missing something vital. So a big positive there.Would I recommend this book to others? As a cosy/crime mystery I probably would. Though I would warn them about the issue I had with this ARC and hope they had been sorted out in the final edit.Would I buy this book for myself? Possibly. However, I’d be tentative to do so until I knew for sure that the editing issues had been sorted out. Same goes for the rest of the series. If I saw them at my local library, I would definitely borrow them for a read as I did enjoy the writing style, protagonist and scene setting… but it hasn’t enthused me enough to go out and buy them. Perhaps, once I’ve had a chance to read the rest in the series, I will change my mind. I can be fickle that way. ;-)In summary – a good, light hearted mystery with a lovely blend and balance of action, mystery, scenery and colourful characters. I just hope the tiny creases in continuity have been sorted out in the final edit. A series to keep an eye out for as it holds a lot of potential.

A Great Cozy Mystery in a wonderful location By Grateful Grandma This is the fourth book in the Gunn Zoo Mystery series but the first one I have read. I very much enjoyed it and will go back and look for the rest of them. This edition takes place in Iceland and included detailed descriptions of Icelandic locations, people and culture. I enjoyed learning about the country and it's culture while reading this cozy mystery.Teddy (Theodora) is a zoo keeper who is engaged to a police officer at home. She has gotten involved in mystery and death prior to this book. The owner of the zoo where she works sends her off to Iceland to collect some animals (polar bear, arctic foxed and a pair of puffins) for her zoo. She heads off with the zoo credit card and decides to make the best of the situation and have a bit of a vacation. This does not work out the way she plans. On the first night there, she witnesses an altercation between an icelander (Ragnar) and a millionaire birder from Arizona who recently won the lottery. The next morning, she stumbles upon the body of said millionaire, Simon Parr. When Ragnar gets arrested for the crime, she gets drawn into the investigation to help her friend Bryndis, Ragnar's ex-girlfriend. While investigating she gets drawn into the lives of the Germonimo Birding Group that was travelling with Simon. Several of the members are suspect, have a reason to want Simon dead and act strangely. It is all very intriguing. I had my suspicions of the murderer along the way, but was not sure until the very end. That always makes a mystery more enjoyable for me.I found this book to be well written, have many interesting characters, especially Teddy, as well as being set in a unique location. I learned a lot about Iceland and when I asked my daughter about some of the information (she has been to Iceland) it was accurate. Obviously well researched.I would certainly recommend this book to those who like cozy mysteries as well as those who like to read about exotic or different locales. Thanks to Poised Pen Press and Netgalley for my copy of this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

It can be read as a stand alone novel. It is an intriguing mystery with international travel, suspense & the opportunity to learn some Icelandic terms. Because it kept me guessing, I gave it five stars.Theodora Bentley, aka Teddy is a zookeeper who travels to Iceland to claim a polar bear cub to bring back to the Gunn Zoo in California.Teddy discovers a body & starts to investigate the circumstances of the murder. This puts her at personal risk & she might meet her own demise at the murderer’s hands.“‘I, for one, don’t blame her for not wanting to be alone right now. Grief shared is grief halved.’‘Sounds like something from one of your books,’ Lucinda grumbled, but after a hard stare from Elizabeth, she fell silent.”Teddy asked her boyfriend Joe who was a sheriff in California to do some research on the members of the birding club she felt were suspicious. Describing Adele Cobb he mentioned: “‘She volunteers at a shelter for battered women, & every now & then feeds the folks at a homeless shelter. And helps out homeless animals. Can’t help liking a woman like that.’ He paused, then added, ‘Or wondering, maybe, if she’s too good to be true.’”Adele discussed Simon breaking up with Dawn. “‘Beauty can attract a man, but beauty alone will never keep him. Look at Marilyn Monroe. Men wanted her, but once they got what they wanted, they couldn’t wait to get rid of her. Maybe Joe DiMaggio truly loved her, but after a few years even he couldn’t put up with her neuroses. Dawn was like that, too. Every man wanted her, but she couldn’t make them stick around.’”I would like to thank Poisoned Pen Press & NetGalley for the free kindle copy to read in exchange for a fair review. That did not influence my opinion of the book.Link to purchase: http://www.amazon.com/Puffin-Death-Gunn-Mystery-Book-ebook/dp/B016V5BX76
