Morris An outstanding and practical guide for coping with prostate cancer and making sound and well-reasoned treatment decisions. A necessary read if you have prostate cancer, or care for someone who does.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I strongly recommend this book! By Jeffrey B. Freedman, MD With bluntness and humor, Dr. Roth has written a book that will be both educational and therapeutic for people dealing with cancer. While the focus is on prostate cancer, it will be useful to those coping with any type of serious illness. The author's vignettes about his own struggles with an acoustic neuroma are relevant. Dr. Roth is not a medication pusher (Disclosure: I am a colleague of his at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer and know he is an excellent psychiatrist!), but Chapter 5 is probably the best summary I have read of psychopharmacology that would be understandable to the general public. I think Dr. Roth's philosophy of living life, outlined in Chapter 10, will inspire people with both curable and incurable illnesses. This book is a gem!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended By G. Williams This book is a lifesaver. I was deeply fortunate that it was released within days of my being told that I needed surgery for prostate cancer. Dr. Roth's direct and honest book is filled with terrific information and wisdom and compassion. I am turning to this book again and again as my surgery approaches. I would urge anyone in the same situation to read this invaluable book.

Locus Recommended Reading ListOpen this book to any page and find yourself enspelled by these lush, alchemical stories. Faced with the uncanny and the impossible, Rickert’s protagonists are as painfully, shockingly, complexly human as the readers who will encounter them. Mothers, daughters, witches, artists, strangers, winged babies, and others grapple with deception, loss, and moments of extraordinary joy.Praise for Mary Rickert's books:"The Memory Garden is a lovely book of women, friendship, sadness and healing, and it is genuinely uplifting. Like the garden of its title, this is a book to take in slowly, to spend time in, to wander through; you'll likely find your-selves the better for it."— NPR"This is a novel haunted by mortality—with people who died young, with people now old and dying, with ghosts. But it is often a joyful novel, a novel of life, forgiveness and good meals with friends and strangers."—Los Angeles Review of Books"I've seldom read a book as gentle, and yet as powerful."— io9.com"Rickert writes with a blend of poetical language and dark suspense."—The Washington Post"A poet of the extremes housed within the human heart."—LocusMary Rickert has long been an undiscovered master of the fantastic. Her first collection, Map of Dreams, received the Crawford and World Fantasy awards, and stories from this collection of new and selected work have received the Shirley Jackson and World Fantasy awards. She has worked as kindergarten teacher, barista, Disneyland balloon vendor, and in the personnel de-partment of Sequoia National Park where she spent her time off hiking the wilderness. You Have Never Been Here: New and Selected Stories, by Mary Rickert

Review "A few years ago Mary Rickert achieved the rare distinction of winning two World Fantasy Awards in one year, for a story and a collection. That story, 'Journey into the Kingdom,' is a highlight of this retrospective collection. . . . The strangeness of Rickert's fiction is more than balanced by her acute insights into families and disturbed minds."— Gary K. Wolfe, Chicago Tribune"You Have Never Been Here is stupid good. There’s no other way to say it. This collection of short stories is at once uniform and eclectic; the stories share threads—both thematic and aesthetic—that bind them together, but each story is clearly and uniquely its own thing. The book opens with the story of a woman slowly turning into a deer, a story that begs to be metaphorized but actually thrives better without the clunkiness of questions like “But what does her turning into a deer represent?” And this is true for many of the stories in Rickert’s collection: fantasy tales that at once ask the audience to find truth in them and at the same time question the nature of that truth. Reading this stories is an experience, and it’s one everyone should have. And buoying up each story is Rickert’s unbeatable prose. . . . I could go on about each of these stories. The way Rickert plays with form, always experimenting: in “Cold Fires,” she tells stories within the story, embedded narratives that, like a few of these pieces, draw on fairy tales and ricochet off one another. Or in “You Have Never Been Here,” the title story, how she messes with second person in a way that is at once creepy and fascinating. These stories stick with you after the reading, begging you to consider them further, to take another peek inside the book, to dig deeper into the characters and narrative. There’s so much to say about each one, but I’ll leave some of the mystery for you to discover on your own."— Hazel and Wren "Mary Rickert’s latest collection, You Have Never Been Here, packs a punch with stories that are quietly devastating and haunting in their strange imagery.” — Campus Circle Holiday Booklist"Beautiful, descriptive prose enriches tales of ghosts, loss, and regret in this leisurely collection. . . . Fans of Neil Gaiman and Kelly Link will appreciate Rickert’s explorations of myth and memory."— Publishers Weekly“Short stories about people haunted by loss and transformed by grief. Ghosts walk through this collection. Witches are rumored. People collect bones, sprout wings, watch their feet turn into hooves. Above all, people tell stories—stories that cast spells, stories that change the world. In "Journey into the Kingdom," a tale about ghosts who walk out of the sea has a powerful effect on a young widower. In "Anyway," a mother asks herself what she would sacrifice to save her son's life. In the collection's longest story, "The Mothers of Voorhisville," a group of women are drawn together when they realize their newborn babies have something very strange in common. Not every piece sings, but those that do have a powerful, haunting effect. As the mother of a dead girl puts it in "The Chambered Fruit," the best of these stories show how "from death, and sorrow, and compromise, you create," how "this is what it means...to be alive." Rickert's (Holiday, 2010, etc.) writing is crystal-clear, moody, occasionally blood-chilling. Her characters maneuver through a world where strange, troubling transformations are possible, but they live and breathe on the page, fully human. The worlds Rickert creates are fantastical, but her work should appeal not just to fantasy fans, but to anyone who appreciates a well-told tale.”— Kirkus Reviews“Rickert’s latest collection contains haunting tales of death, love, and loss. In stories that are imbued with mythology, beasts, and fantastical transformations, Rickert captures the fanciful quality of regret and longing. . . . Rickert’s blend of dark and whimsy is reminiscent of Angela Carter. Perfect for readers looking for something unique, melancholy, and fantastical.”— Booklist

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Standout, amazing work. By Galleywampus Most of these works have been in past compilations by Rickert. There are three new ones here. This worked out well because I'm new to Rickert's work myself; I really have never been here."Journey into the Kingdom" is a standout, amazing work of art. Of course, it has the award pedigree to back that up. It reminds me, in some ways, of Neil Gaiman plot and structure told with a more poetic, flowing voice. I don't mean to suggest there is anything derivative about this work. I am a huge fan of Gaiman. He writes some of my favorite short fiction. I loved this story, and place it high on my list of favorite short works. Period. The stories are not straightforward. They wind around, meander through realistic emotions. The sentences are lush, extended, multifaceted. I read "The Shipbuilder" three times, seeking the thread I had missed. I asked so many questions, marked the story up with highlighter, read passages to my wife and sought confirmation of my perspectives. This is the perfect compilation of stories for English majors, those who like analyzing every word, and those who like stories that don't hold the reader's hand. Highly recommended.*I received a copy of this book free from the publisher, who hoped I would review it. My review was in no way influenced by the manner of book acquisition.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Dark suspense and skewed reality By Maria Haskins There are short stories in ‘You Have Never Been Here’ that are unsettling and disturbing, odd and brilliant, strange and weirdly beautiful, all at the same time. All the short stories share an ever-present vibe of dark suspense and skewed reality that keeps you on edge throughout, and some of the stories are so skillfully executed in their madness that I know they will stick with me for a long time.Rickert’s tales teem with death and ghosts and bones, love and loss and haunting imagery. There are dead children, winged children, ghost children, and children collecting bones. There are drowned women who work in coffee shops, a shoe-box full of stones that hold memories of past lives, men building boats in their backyards, a corpse painter, and a strange place that might or might not be a hospital, and a train that might or might not really be a train taking patients to that hospital. The stories that appealed to me most were ‘Memoir of a Deer Woman’, where a woman is slowly turning into (back into?) a deer; ‘The Shipbuilder’, where a man named Quark tries to understand his own past and his abusive father (or is it really his father?); and especially ‘The Christmas Witch’.‘The Christmas Witch’ perfectly crafted: a complex weave of witchcraft, weirdness, family, childhood, grief, fear, and loss; with a child at its center who is just as complicate and ornery and powerful and strange as real children can be.This is a strange and often wonderful collection of stories, even though there are a couple of tales (‘Holiday’ and ‘The Chambered Fruit’ come to mind) that I found so unsettling that they were almost difficult to read. That said, I have a feeling that different readers will find different tales to be the most unsettling. If you’re into twisted tales that veer off into suspense and even a dab of restrained horror, then this is a book for you.

Rickert has a wonderful ability to make stories both fun and hearty By A Book Lover This book is full of weird depth as Rickert conjures tales that are both melancholy and magical. Certainly, the impossible is possible in these stories, but really these stories brings to reader impossible hearts--broken, tattered, hopeful and above all loving. It is the chambers of the heart these people are lost. Rickert has a wonderful ability to make stories both fun and hearty.

Suggestion, or rather Autosuggestion, is quite a new subject, and yet at the same time it is as old as the world. It is new in the sense that until now it has been wrongly studied and in consequence wrongly understood; it is old because it dates from the appearance of man on the earth. In fact autosuggestion is an instrument that we possess at birth, and in this instrument, or rather in this force, resides a marvelous and incalculable power, which according to circumstances produces the best or the worst results. Knowledge of this force is useful to each one of us, but it is peculiarly indispensable to doctors, magistrates, lawyers, and to those engaged in the work of education. By knowing how to practice it consciously it is possible in the first place to avoid provoking in others bad autosuggestions which may have disastrous consequences, and secondly, consciously to provoke good ones instead, thus bringing physical health to the sick, and moral health to the neurotic and the erring, the unconscious victims of anterior autosuggestions, and to guide into the right path those who had a tendency to take the wrong one. We possess within us a force of incalculable power, which, when we handle it unconsciously is often prejudicial to us. If on the contrary we direct it in a conscious and wise manner, it gives us the mastery of ourselves and allows us not only to escape and to aid others to escape, from physical and mental ills, but also to live in relative happiness, whatever the conditions in which we may find ourselves. Lastly, and above all, it should be applied to the moral regeneration of those who have wandered from the right path.

From the Publisher Kessinger Publishing reprints over 1,500 similar titles all available through Amazon.com.

From the Back Cover Originally published in 1922, Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion caused a stir throughout the scientific and religious communities. Émile Coué's assertions that the repetition of certain phrases, or mantras, can have a positive effect on the health and happiness of an individual challenged the existing reliance on chemicals and clergy.

However, his theories, which are laid out in straightforward detail in his work, were solidly based on his firsthand experiences with patients, including such stalwart methods as conditioning therapy and the placebo effect. Often invited to lecture on the subject, he finally was motivated to commit it to writing by his desire to help people help themselves.

About the Author Emile Coue est ne en 1857 a Troyes. Cest comme pharmacien qu'il s'est apercu des bienfaits de la suggestion, en vendant des medicaments avec des bonnes paroles qui decuplaient l'effet de ses potions.

By aklein@gis.net, Tudi Upon first reading, I believe what impressed me most about this text was the constant reminder that it is our imagination, not our will, that dictates the direction of our actions. With the latest barrage of psychological doctrines focused on finding the person(s) responsible for the rash of killing sprees and murders; this book was a refreshing reminder that it is indeed within us to determine what we do, how we do it, and even why. Emile Coue allows us the chance to enhance a function that we are born with and utilize unwittingly everyday, only not usually to our advantage. He gives us the simplest of all principles: conscious use of our own innate awareness, and proves to us that pure autosuggestion really can work to drastically change our lives for the better. Once the premise of conscious autosuggestion is mastered through practice, using it to aid students or clients is shared as a simple and effective means of effective and long term treatment.

By A Customer Emile Coue explains the value of repeated self-talk, like repeating the same self-talk forty times a day, twenty times in the morning and twenty times in the evening. Emile Coue is very honest in explaining why hypnotism works for a few people and why hypnotism does not work for others. Apparently scores of people have been helped by Coue's method.

36 of 38 people found the following review helpful. An Unsung Milestone in the History of Psychology By Charles E. Joubert Emile Coué was a French druggist who pioneered the method of self-hypnosis called autosuggestion. It was popular during the 1920's; but the combination of Coué's death and the fact that he was out of then-mainstream psychology led to its being eclipsed.Poor Coué was a little too far ahead of the Zeitgeist. It would have fit in better today with the development of cognitive psychology and the development of cognitive therapies.Esstentially, Coué in this work emphasizes the role of positive thinking in self-improvement. In this way he implicitly proposed bridging the gap between behavior and cognition, a concept offered over 250 years earlier by Blaise Pascal. But can reciting a mantra involving positive thoughts improve one's outlook? There is some evidence that it can.Emile Coué offers a number of practical suggestions for cognitive self-improvement in this very readable work. It is equally recommended for both the scholar in the history of psychology as well as the everyday reader seeking practical suggestions in management of thoughts. So: "Each day, and in every way, I am getting better and better." Putting a different cognitive spin on things can improve one's life.

I was swept away By Susan M Sparks The author transported me to a part of the country I've never been to, but her descriptions were so vivid, I was shivering in the damp and cold right along with Win. Very finely crafted story line - I was especially happy that she followed up with an epilogue. Can't wait to read more from her.

The characters come alive---I could hear them talking---and the reader is drawn into a compelling tale. I felt as if I were there in the way she described the tides, the whales and the bears. An extraordinary read.

This is a story of love, a story of fear By Larry Menlove I knew from the first few pages of “The Geography of Water” that Mary Emerick writes from a mysterious place, a place enchanted and haunted. A place with a floor of muskeg and a ceiling of endless sky. I could feel the wind and fog, could hear the dead silences and beating hearts. This is a story of love, a story of fear, a story told with nothing held back about women and men. Families. A mother and her daughter. And the secrets, so many secrets surrounded by bears and whales and the dark space below the surface of Never Summer Bay.Thanks to Laura Walker at University of Alaska Press for suggesting this title and selling it to me. A few dollars very well spent.

The very real details of cancer and treatments are simplified and told in a loving and caring way that children (and adults) can relate to without being afraid or upset. This is a must read for any child who is dealing with cancer...whether themselves, a friend or a family member.

"From the Irish enclave of South Buffalo and a Niagara Street bar to a costly house in Nottingham Terrace and a once-grand Gothic structure in Elmwood Village, Buffalo's past and present come to life in the offbeat, disturbing, and sometimes darkly comical tales by authors who really know their city."--Kirkus Reviews"Park's introduction, in effect a true-crime case study, is as gripping as any of the 13 stories set in or around Buffalo, N.Y., in this strong Akashic noir volume, whose contributors include several mystery heavyweights....Those curious about the criminal side of the second-biggest city in New York will be rewarded."--Publishers Weekly"The anthology features 12 dark tales of Buffalo, written by 13 authors with strong ties to Buffalo. Each story represents a different neighborhood and cross-section of the city, and the resulting collection feels like a vivid, comprehensive tour of a distinctive place, administered by locals. There's nothing quite like noir to shine a light, after all."--Los Angeles Review of Books"12 original short stories by established local authors with flawless credentials....Together, the stories cover cityscapes well-known to Buffalonians--to name a few, Elmwood Avenue, Niagara Street, Black Rock, North Park, Delaware Park, and Allentown. Local landmarks Peace Bridge and the Anchor Bar made it in there, too."--Examiner.com"Superb....What we have in this anthology brilliantly edited by Ed Park and Brigid Hughes are 12 writers with strong Buffalo connections writing dark tales specifically for this anthology and set in Buffalo....It's a dark but very happy surprise between paper covers."--The Buffalo News"Our fair city finally lands its volume in the acclaimed City Noir series from Brookyn's Akashic Books, and it's a dandy--twelve stories from writers born or otherwise attached here, with a stunning cover taken from a photo by area writer and chef Joe George. The stories, with settings all over the city, provide a virtual tour of what's noir about Buffalo, and Buffalo about noir."--Artvoice"Buffalo gets its day in the dark with 183 pages of marvelous yarns....A true treat."--Buffalo RocketAkashic Books continues its groundbreaking series of original noir anthologies, launched in 2004 with Brooklyn Noir. Each story is set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book.Featuring brand-new stories by: Joyce Carol Oates, Lawrence Block, Ed Park, Gary Earl Ross, Kim Chinquee, Christina Milletti, Tom Fontana, Dimitri Anastasopoulos, Lissa Marie Redmond, S.J. Rozan, John Wray, Brooke Costello, and Connie Porter.Buffalo, New York, is still the second-largest metropolis in the state, but in recent years its designation as the Queen City has been elbowed aside by a name that's pure noir: The City of No Illusions. Presidents came from here; and in 1901, a president was killed here while visiting the Pan-American Exposition, by a man who checked into a hotel under a name that translates as Nobody. As Buffalo saw its prosperity wane, those on the outside could only see harsh winters and Rust Belt grit, chicken wings and sports teams that came agonizingly close. (Vincent Gallo's Buffalo 66 is less the doomed quest of a would-be assassin than the collective fever dream of every Bills fan.)Anyone who has spent more than a few days in Buffalo will tell you that this city can spar with any other major American metropolis in the noir arena. This highly anticipated entry in the Akashic Noir Series includes stories from Buffalo-affiliated mystery titans as well as up-and-comers.

Buffalo Noir (Akashic Noir)From Akashic Books

Review "The stories in Buffalo Noir result in one of the most impressive and memorable of Akashic's many Noir collections to date....Buffalo Noir should be added to the pile of books on the side table of all crime fiction fans, especially those who admire contemporary noir."--Bookgasm"Buffalo Noir, released at the end of 2015, is yet another great addition to Akashic's catalog and a collection that fans of gritty fiction should definitely check out....An anthology that fans of great crime fiction need to check. Of course, for those familiar with the series, saying that is preaching to a very devout choir."--Dead End Follies"If you enjoy noir, you simply cannot go wrong with any of the books in the Akashic Books noir series, this one included."--Book Chase"A very nice collection of stories."--Journey of a Bookseller"The Richardson Complex, Delaware Park, Anchor Bar, Nottingham Terrace--all places we've heard about on the news, walked by or even visited, and all are in this book. The 12 short stories, by writers like Tom Fontana and Joyce Carol Oates, resonate from the darker side of Buffalo, but have a tone that will leave you smirking to yourself by the end of the tale. In spite of its darkness, Buffalo Noir is a book one can easily get lost in."--BfloGirlWorld

By Virginia Campbell Buffalo, New York, also called "The Queen City" is noted as the second-largest city in the state. Known for spicy little chicken wings and very big, very cold snows, Buffalo has a unique character all its own. "Buffalo Noir", edited by Ed Park and Brigid Hughes, is a compelling collection of short stories which offers a glimpse into the diversity of this multi-faceted metropolis. Beginning with Ed Park's fascinating, detailed introduction, this anthology takes the reader on a journey through the neighborhoods and streets of Buffalo--and each section of the city has a story to tell. Divided into three parts, "Buffalo Unveiled", "Hearts & Minds", and "Bloodlines", the book features twelve tales from thirteen talented authors: Joyce Carol Oates, Lawrence Block, Ed Park, Gary Earl Ross, Kim Chinquee, Christina Milletti, Tom Fontana, Dimitri Anastasopoulos, Lissa Marie Redmond, S.J. Rozan, John Wray, Brooke Costello, and Connie Porter. If "Noir" is just your shade for reading enjoyment, be sure to check the amazing roster of Noir Anthologies from Akashic Books--each story is set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book.Review Copy Gratis Library Thing

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Very good crime stories in an underrated city By Stephen M. Smits I wasn't really familiar with the "Noir" series, but spotting this on the Library Thing give-away list prompted me to ask for it. I am somewhat familiar with Buffalo as I have visited family there a number of times. Buffalo's reputation as a dowdy rust belt city is not fair. It's got a lot to offer -- some great beaux arts architecture, a surprisingly good theater district, a top caliber symphony and many distinctive neighborhoods. This slim volume of crime stories is quite worth the read. The authors all are from (or were from) Buffalo and/or Western New York. Each story takes place in a different section of the city.I especially liked "The Bubble Man of Allentown" by Dimitri Anastasopolos, "Falling on Ice" by Lissa Marie Redmond (whose day job is detective on the Buffalo PD), "Valentine" by the terrific Joyce Carol Oates and "Good Neighbors" by Gary Earl Ross.Knowing the city featured in the volume helps, but these stories stand out even without such familiarity.

I enjoy noir, but this was not a book I would recommend. One or two of the stories were well written but several others were painful to read. And in Joyce Carrol Oates story she kept referring to the RED ROCK section of Buffalo...never heard any section referred to as red rock......

This “stay positive in difficult times” story is about a man with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) and his wife who writes about their inspiring journey in her blog called ALS With Courage. In Hold On, Let Go, Nadine Sands expands on her blog, which takes her readers from pre-diagnosis to Michael’s complete paralysis, and reflects throughout on her husband’s strength and determination; on their hope and faith in God; and the sorrow and joy of learning to let go. “Mike has let go of working, walking, talking, eating, moving, and slowly he lets go of breathing. And I am letting go of him.… With each loss, we gain; by losing so much, we have more than we could imagine.” Follow Nadine as she learns to savour every moment, to give thanks in all circumstances, and to cherish the love. “Our love would never have known these depths had Mike been taken away suddenly. Instead we were given three to five years to rejoice, pray, and give thanks together every day.”

Hold On, Let Go: Facing ALS with courage and hope, by Nadine Sands, Michael Sands

Review "In her book, Nadine pulls back the veil of her family's experience with ALS, enough to give us a taste of the emotions, the practical challenges, the needed support, and necessary encouragement that are required to navigate these treacherous waters. This book offers lessons for facing an impending death with grace and dignity. Be repared to have your eyes opened and your heart touched." Dr. Tom Blackaby, Author, International Speaker, Blackaby Ministries International "As athletes we talk about making every minute count and never giving up. Nadine and Mike, along with their family, are true inspirations with their approach and attitude towards life. With ALS recently impacting one of my loved ones, I find Nadine and Mike's commitment to hope, faith and love incredibly uplifting and moving."Carla MacLeod, Two-Time Olympic Gold Medalist, Canadian National Women's Hockey Team "In my position as the Executive Director of the ALS Society of BC, I am motivated every day by the courage of the people we serve. Nadine and Mike are an amazing couple who are an inspiration to everone they meet. ALS cannot take away the incredible love they have for each other."Wendy Toyer, Executive Director, ALS Society of BC

About the Author

Nadine Sands has spent many years working as a certified fitness instructor and personal trainer and has also raised three children along with her husband Michael. Before Michael’s diagnosis with ALS (otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), Nadine and her husband were an active couple who enjoyed various sports, as well as hiking and biking. Nadine was also actively involved in her family’s charity, Project Wellness. When it was discovered that Michael had ALS, a terminal illness, Nadine became his full-time, primary caregiver. She started a blog about their journey as a couple called ALS With Courage. She is passionate about sharing her and her husband’s inspirational story and raising awareness about ALS.

Mike Sands was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario. He moved to BC in 1985 at the age of 23 and joined the army. Soon after, he moved to Maple Ridge, BC, and met the love of his life, Nadine. Mike and Nadine got married and five years later had their third child to complete their family. During those years, Mike went back to school to become a nurse. He was working two jobs as a registered nurse, specializing in Psychiatric Nursing, when in 2011 he was diagnosed with ALS. Nadine is Mike’s primary caregiver and the two reside with Nadine’s sister and family in their ground level basement suit. Mike enjoys spending time with his family, including his five year old granddaughter, Leah.

While reading the stories I feel as though I'm a part of them somehow. Nadine captures all the little details in the lives of her family while facing the challenges of als. The book is not only a picture of what life with als is about but also shows us how the family draws closer to God during times of fear and uncertainty. Nadine and Mike have such great relationship with each other and with God that you get drawn in to a love story like no other. I don't get very emotional when reading but Nadine accomplished that too. She also made me laugh and her husband Mike sure looks aty life in a funny way. All in all the best book I have read. Thank you Nadine for Sharing your story. IBrian

She's right in my living room, talking to me. This is such a comforting, heart-warming book that I have recommended it to my book club at church.
