A hilarious and biting memoir from the actor, comedian and Saturday Night Live alumni.

David Spade is best known for his harsh "Hollywood" Minute Sketches on SNL, his starring roles in movies like Tommy Boy and Joe Dirt, and his seven-year stint as Dennis Finch on the series Just Shoot Me. Now, with a wit as dry as the weather in his home state of Arizona, the "comic brat extraordinaire" delivers a memoir.

Spade takes fans back to his childhood as a wannabe cool younger brother and recounts his excruciating road-tour to fame—when he was regularly mistaken for a fourteen year-old. He dishes about his time on SNL during the beloved Rock/Sandler/Farley era of the 1990s, and brags about the ridiculous perks that fame has brought into his life, including a crazy assistant who attacked him while he was sleeping, being threatened on the street in Beverley Hills by Eddie Murphy, and being one of the shortest guys at the Playboy mansion (the views weren’t bad).

Sometimes dirty, sometimes just plain silly, David Spade reminds us what made him one of our favorite funny people.

Abrams David Spade is undeniably funny and these are his stories in his own words (so they are efficiently crafted and packed with punchlines). Mega-fans and comedy nerds will recognize that Spade mines his own previous stand-up specials and talk show appearances for some material (comics regularly have planned punchlines when they "do panel") - but who would be such a jackbag as to expect otherwise? Also, Spade deserves credit for being refreshingly self-aware and wisely self-deprecating compared to some people's perception of his occasionally derided public persona. Now for some criticism...As a veteran stand-up comic, Spade is used to vibing off of an audience's response. So merely reading into a mic in a tiny recording booth is like a tiger in a cage; the energy is going to be lower and he's going to sound less enthusiastic. This is especially true because Spade even articulates his theory of comedy in the book that the more offhanded and lighter you pitch a joke the lower the stakes and thus the less likely you are to fall hard if the joke doesn't land (which is contrasted with the hilarious but sweaty comedy of his old buddy Chris Farley, RIP). The net result in the unabridged audiobook is a feeling like you're stuck on the tarmac of a 5-hour delayed flight next to this super funny comedian who can't sleep. Consequently, you get to listen to all of these nevertheless great stories though not amplified by the performing panache you'd get from his club/stage show.BOTTOM LINE: If you're a fan of David Spade then you must get this book in some form. Readers should probably get the printed book. Anyone old enough to still own a CD player will be content with the unabridged audio book. But the publishers should enable podcast-style digital downloads so that such fans can listen at 1.5 speed to efficiently combat today's hyper-prevalent ADHD. Everyone else should plan on seeing him perform live or hope they get lucky with airline seating assignments & delays.

I loved it, laughed out loud and really thought this book was heart felt and sincere. He shares a lot about fellow comedians and keeps it real, but not negative. I hated when the book ended. I lost my car pool buddy! Can't recommend more highly!

David reads it and his approach really adds something to the content. The way the book is written sounds like it was dictated not “written” - which is not necessarily a bad thing. It comes off as very casual and laid back, like he is just sitting there sharing stories with you.I always find the drive and motivation of people who succeed in show business or comedy so fascinating. When he tells stories of all of the things he had to do, the hard work that he had to put in, you almost feel like you were there with him. The details of the ins and outs of Saturday Night Live were also so interesting. He was first hired as a writer and as a writer, you have so much time to get a sketch approved and on the air. You are basically hired on as a trial or probationary writer. In the beginning, every summer he would worry about whether or not he would be called back in the fall. The stories of his early days on the comedy circuit are so intriguing. You can almost feel the adrenallin that he feels. The rush of going out there on stage, the terrifying fear of defeat. All the work and effort that goes into a $35 a night gig. There wasn’t anything really super laugh out loud funny, but it was funny and entertaining, heartfelt and sincere. If he writes another book, I would definitely get it in an audio book again.
