The high-pitched sound yanked Ethan Scott's attention away from the television screen and the football game he'd carved out time to watch live, no distractions.Who would be calling at this hour?The hitch in his breath was born out of a hidden fear he kept tucked deep inside his soul. When his parents were killed in a fatal car crash, Ethan had been the first to get the news. As the oldest of four, he had to identify the bodies, to inform his three younger siblings and to handle all the funeral arrangements.He'd completed each task without hesitation, and had been forced to repeat an eerily similar process a year and a half ago when another deadly car accident had taken his fiancée.The incessant ringing continued.Like a shock wave, old memories rippled across new. Ethan's previously easy, relaxed mood spiraled into something darker.He debated ignoring the call. Few people had his home number, and any medical emergency would either go to his answering service or come through on his cell phone.The ringing stopped.Banishing unwanted memories and the emotions they brought, Ethan sat back to enjoy the game. "What did she eat?""A hamburger, fries, oh, and a cinnamon roll. I know they aren't the healthiest choices, but she starts school tomorrow and I took her to the mall to buy her some new clothes. You might think it's odd I'm putting her in school two weeks before Christmas break, but I wanted her to meet other kids before—"He cut her off. "Hold up. Does she have a fever?"Keely blew out a loud hiss. "I checked it right before I called Ryder's cell phone. The thermometer said 99.7 degrees. When I press on your stomach, I need you tell me if it hurts."The little girl nodded again. "Does it hurt when I press here?""Not really.""You're doing great, Flicka. Just a little bit longer and we'll be through." Ethan continued the rest of the exam with a firm but gentle manner.When he held Felicity's ankle with one hand and her knee with the other, then rotated her hip, the little girl simply watched him in silent fascination. No gasp of pain. No clenched fists in the comforter.Keely nearly cried in relief.Eventually, Ethan stood, said goodbye to Felicity, then motioned for Keely to follow him into the hallway.The moment they were alone, she asked the question burning in her mind. "Is it her appendix?""Nothing indicates that particular diagnosis."What kind of cryptic, unhelpful answer was that? "Are you certain?""She's not experiencing swelling in the abdomen or pain in the lower right region. At this point I don't believe an ultrasound or additional lab work is necessary."He'd pitched his voice low, as if to calm her fears. Keely wasn't appeased. "If it's not her appendix, then what's wrong with her?""She has a stomachache."His matter-of-fact tone increased her distress. "Is there something you can give her to make her feel better?""For now, there's nothing to do but continue supportive measures. Keep her hydrated and resting. If the symptoms persist or worsen, call me and I'll come back over."Why was he so calm? Didn't he understand how worried she was? "I can't bear seeing her in pain.""Keely, relax. Flicka has a stomachache, probably brought on by stress or the consumption of junk food or both.""You're saying this is my fault because I let her eat junk food.""That's not what I'm saying. Kids suffer stomachaches all the time. I'm confident she's going to be okay."Why didn't she feel better? Why this terrible spasm of guilt in the center of her heart? "I feel so helpless.""You did the right thing calling me."Actually, she'd called Ryder. Ethan's younger brother by two years was so much easier to take. Though he was just as good-looking as Ethan, nearly identical actually, with Ryder there was none of the friction and hostility she experienced in the company of this particular Dr. Scott."I mean it, Keely. You can call me anytime, no matter how late."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Putting the Past Behind Them By Bunnyhop What a tender holiday gift this book was! I enjoyed it so much! This story was about healing and hope! Ethan has had too much tragedy in his life. He doesn't want to take a chance again at letting anyone close - no more love in his live except for his family. First his parents were killed, then his fiancé was killed and after that her daughter was taken back by her biological father. Ethan's heart has been ripped to shreds. He's a doctor and he enjoys helping people that way but he wont give his heart to anyone else again. However, his backyard neighbor, Keely, he's known forever and when she gets guardianship of her cousin's daughter, Ethan helps Keely with the transition. He and Keely love to bicker - they always have - but they will put that aside for sweet Felicity during the holidays as she tries to adjust to life with her mom in prison. I adored Felicity, aka Flicka! That little girl was so brave and loveable! She had an enduring spirit about her and soon has Ethan wrapped around his finger! Keely also has a painful relationship in her past. Can the two adults put their painful pasts behind then and find joy again? I also loved the dogs in this book. They brought another level of tenderness to the book!

I really enjoyed this story By Jenny Dominguez The Doctor's Christmas Wish (Village Green) by Renee RyanRead 10/4/2015 Reviewed 2/27/16When I received A Western Christmas from Ms. Ryan for an honest review I received The Doctors Christmas Wish as a gift. I really enjoyed this story, as I did all of Renee’s Charity House series. I liked that this story was tied into the Charity House. This is the first book that I have read from the Village Green series, but plan to put the rest of them on my TBR list. Ethan has so much loss and tragedy in his life but love proves once again that love can prevail. Keely is dealing with suddenly becoming a single parent when she receives guardianship of her cousins daughter. As these two work together to help Felicity (Flicka) deal with what is going on in her life, they become closer and soon find love and the Christmas spirit in their lives. I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a good romantic Christmas story.

I also loved that Keely's twin brother, Beau, was named after their great-great grandfather (for more info on that, read the historical series, Charity House).At the end of this book, I figured that Keely is one of those parents who rushes her child to the ER anytime they are sick...But other than that issue, the book was great. There was plenty of romantic tension also!
