The Long Road of Woman's Memory, by Jane Addams

About the Author Jane Addams (1860 – 1935) was a pioneer settlement worker, founder of Hull House in Chicago, public philosopher, sociologist, author, and leader in woman suffrage and world peace. Beside presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, she was the most prominent reformer of the Progressive Era and helped turn the nation to issues of concern to mothers, such as the needs of children, public health, and world peace. She said that if women were to be responsible for cleaning up their communities and making them better places to live, they needed the vote to be effective in doing so. Addams became a role model for middle-class women who volunteered to uplift their communities. She is increasingly recognized as a member of the American pragmatist school of philosophy. In 1931 she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Pertinent material published in shoddy format By Tucker I may differ with Jane Addams on some things, but what she chronicles here and her thoughts on it, are worth engaging...in a better copy than presented in this edition. This copy of Addams' book is shoddy in its construction and careless in its editing. I found no editor's note or foreword to this edition conceding that there were typographical errors allowed in order to maintain an accurate representation of Addams' original text. So, I assume that the errors are the result of a hurried, improperly-edited reprint. And unfortunately, from the quick search I ran on Amazon, this appears to be the only edition available, excepting the Kindle edition, which I don't count. (The possible exception is the hardcover edition, though I'm not able to tell if it's the same copy). All of that to say that while the editing was awful, it's certainly readable. Simply, there are a few errors that will snag your attention occasionally, making you spend a few moments puzzling out the intended (rather than the printed) word (and I'm not talking about the portions in which she's quoting women from the Hull House).Reviews of the ideas (and even writing style) encountered in the book are generally subjective and unhelpful (though sometimes warranted), and I'm humble enough to realize that my own opinion is not particularly enlightened in this area, as I am no expert; if you want an opinion on whether the material is worth reading, read it yourself and form your own opinion. Thanks,Tucker
