Looking Through Water: A Novel, by Bob Rich

Review “Daily demands so often lead us astray from what we care about most. Looking Through Water calls us back. With wit and wisdom, Bob Rich reminds us that a conversation held on the open water is analogous to life—a little solitude on the surface is just what we need to ponder its depth.” —Sandy Moret, Florida Keys Outfitters“Everyone who is or has a son, daughter, father, or grandfather will see parts of themselves and their families in this beautifully crafted book. I love the way Bob Rich weaves multiple coming of age stories together in a clear and touching way.” —Robert Nutting, Chairman of the Board, Pittsburgh Pirates“Looking Through Water is a powerful novel of male bonding and fractured relationships. The journey through water and fly fishing is one of forgiveness for three generations of men; a father, a son and finally a grandson. In his fast moving narrative, Bob Rich asks us to consider the trappings of a material life and the healing forces of the sea.” —Susannah Marren, author of Between the Tides “This is a moving story of self-discovery and redemption which climaxes in a superbly told fishing-tournament off the Florida Keys. It is at once an adventure, a meditation on what it means to be a man, and a magnificent novel.” —Bernard Cornwell, author of The Last Kingdom“As with any great work of fiction, Bob Rich’s Looking Through Water is really about a profound truth. In this case, that truth is about family—about fathers and sons, and grandfathers and grandsons—and the sometimes stormy seas that must be navigated to find a safe harbor.” —Monte Burke, author of Saban: The Making of a Coach“At the same time a gripping, fast-paced, hard-to-put-down fishing adventure story, and a wise, big-hearted look at four generations of father/son relationships. The result is nothing less than one hell of a good read!” —Charles Gaines, author and outdoorsman

About the Author Bob Rich was first exposed to the art of storytelling at summer camps in northern Ontario. Growing up, reading Hemingway inspired him to write. Living on the shores of Lake Erie and the Florida Keys provides him with a wealth of his own tales to tell. He is the author of three books, Fish Fights, The Fishing Club, and The Right Angle and is the coauthor of Secrets from the Delphi Café. Looking Through Water is his first novel. Looking Through Water reminds me of the life lessons that are passed from good men to their sons. Bob Rich's novel touches in ways you may not expect. Relationships between multi-generational family members collide in this wonderful read, staged in the wilderness that is the Florida Keys and beyond. You'll see from the watering holes, where you learn about " the nice little drinking village, that has a serious fishing problem, to the shark infested waters of the big city and the beautiful ocean flats, that when you feel that tug at the end of your line that it may not be a fish. It may be a tug at your heart and soul, instead.Well done! Can't wait for your next one!

A quick and deeply satisfying read, no matter who you are By Amazon Customer I grew up with a fanatical fly fisherman for a father, who turned me on to to Looking Through Water. Reading it brought right back to all those long days we spent together on those sunny flats in the Keys and it was truly a treasure to be whisked back to that world I remember so fondly. I could almost taste the salt air and feel the sunburn on the back of my neck as I I became enthralled with the characters and the familiar world they inhabit. The way they talk, the mantras they live by, the passion with which they pursue their elusive catch, it all rang so very true to the memories I have of that place. At first glance, one might assume that it's a simply a manly tale, told through generations of men; but as a daughter of this almost secret and certainly unruly sporting tradition, there is so much to appreciate in the richness of the characters and their relationships with each other. Having been a tangential part of the world the Rich's characters inhabit, I not only found tremendous comfort in the authenticity of their interactions but also felt I could actually learn quite a bit about the tradition and history that has enthralled my father for as long as I can remember. And aside from my own personal connection to the esoteric world that provides the setting for this story, I could not help but find deep connection to the underlying motifs of complex personal and family histories and the residues of regret and self doubt that often punctuate our human condition. I can't imagine a single soul out there that can't relate to these things. The characters let us in, and in turn the reader get a glimpse not only of the universality of these themes but also of the redemption that can come from reconciling our demons.

By Donald Arthurson After I finished reading Looking Through Water, it made me miss the all too few days spent fishing with my father all that much more. Bob Rich transports you not just to the Florida Keys, but into the middle of a family situation that is all too familiar in these days of social media addiction and multi generational disconnection. He shows that fishing IS the great unifier and healer. How ironic that he is donating all of the proceeds from this book to Project Healing Waters.I hope that he keeps writing, because I look forward to reading his next book!

The fanfiction writers are much better and they put MUCH more effort into their writing By Susan I can honestly say this is the last time I am fooled. Same old recycled scenes, with mistakes on basic tenets of the series. Rangeman is in a 7 story building (not 9 story), Ranger's office is on the 5th floor (not the 3rd). I'm tired of this. Just STOP, Janet. The fanfiction writers are much better and they put MUCH more effort into their writing. DO NOT BUY this book if you are a BABE. Ranger is barely in it. Only thing I can figure is Evanovich has enough money now and is tired of writing. She really killed a good series. I AM DONE.

After the last 5-6 books I was expecting to walk away feeling cheated of my hard earned money. I was left wondering if Janet even wrote this book. Why because on one hand it was better than the dribble passed on to us in the last few but there was some facts changed from the previous story's almost like the author couldn't remember what they have previously written. While the story was better and I did see some growth in Stephanie the love triangle is dead, she starts the book and ends it the same as the previous 12, with Morelli. Now she is making Ranger out to be a letcher, granted a dang hot one but never the less a letcher. It left me feeling like Janet is betraying one of the main characters and dragging this out for just a little more money. Even though it was better than the last one I wish I had waited and borrowed it from the library for free. RIP Ranger

112 of 122 people found the following review helpful. Disappointed By Janet L. Zickler Like a lot of us, I was hoping for Ranger, Ranger and more Ranger. I was excited when Morelli seemed to remove himself from the picture. But that didn't happen. This is just the same story line with different cases to solve. I'm not wasting any more money on this series.

Calloustown, the seventh collection from master raconteur George Singleton, who’s been praised by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as the “unchallenged king of the comic Southern short story,” finds the author at the absolute top of his game as he traces the unlikely inhabitants of the titular Calloustown in all their humanity. Whether exploring family, religion, politics or the true meaning of home, these stories range from deeply affecting to wildly absurd and back again, all in the blink of an eye.

Calloustown, by George Singleton

Review Publishers Weekly02/15/2016Rich characterization is the highlight of this vivid collection of 15 short stories about life in a small South Carolina town. Singleton's stirring examination of the unusual Calloustown residents is filled with fresh, surprising, and striking descriptions that are at once sweet, odd, sad, and humorous. In "These Deep Barbs Irremovable," large-breasted Adazee is described as having a "scoliosistic future teeming with greedy chiropractors and hyperbolic support-brassiere manufacturers." This and similar descriptions of characters rife with flaws, and a town so dismal that "General Sherman swerved away" because "he didn't see it fit to waste fire on," endear them to the reader and make the town charming in its own way. Told mostly in first person by an older male narrator who often references his wife, the stories are connected by people and places, such as Worm and his watering hole called Worm's. Singleton captures truisms about human behavior: in "When It's Q&A Time," young Reed is able to keep quiet about his shocking interaction with a neighbor, but he doesn't hesitate to air his father's dirty laundry. Singleton's collection offers a refreshing and engaging perspective on a small town's humanity. (Nov.)"George Singleton works territory that is not terribly fashionable these days but is durably appealing: wacko-Southern." —The New York Times"George Singleton might well be America's funniest short story writer." —Men's Journal“The people of Calloustown—George Singleton’s brilliant new collection—are as hard-bitten and worn down as the title suggests, but in the hands of Singleton, without a doubt one of the very finest storytellers out there, there are veins of redemption and compassion at every turn, not to mention the trademark exhilarating humor and wit that grace all the Singleton writes. He is one of the funniest writers out there and also one of the wisest.” —Jill McCorkle, author of July 7 and Life after Life“If you read only one book this year, make it Calloustown. George Singleton is the best kind of genius, a mad one, and while his stories are acts of mad genius, they are also acts of great skill, acts of great compassion, acts of great intelligence. These are stories not to be missed” —Tom Franklin, author of Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter and Hell at the Breech

About the Author George Singleton is the author of two novels and seven short story collections, including Between Wrecks and Stray Decorum. A 2013 SIBA Book Award Finalist, his work has appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, and Playboy. A former Guggenheim Fellow, he was awarded the Hillsdale Award for Fiction by The Fellowship of Southern Writers in 2011. He teaches writing at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC.

By Thomas Williams A national treasure, George Singleton seems to have an endless supply of tales that never flag in making me laugh. This particular collection finds him at the height of his gifts, with stories that bend but never break, travel roads that always find a way home, and wind up evoking worlds that you'll wish were your own.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another Great Collection from a Master Storyteller By Peter A. Moore This is a brilliant collection from one of the great Southern writers. There is humor, for which he is famous, but the stories are also poignant and colorful, and Singleton manages to mix the pain of poverty and family dysfunction with the warmth and unhidden beauty of struggling people in our midst. George Singleton helps us laugh at ourselves and the futile situations we create, and he shows us how to love the unlovable and to understand their dilemma. I often give his books to those who are condescending and demeaning toward the unsophisticated, poorly educated, and striving in their community, in hopes that they'll come away with a deeper sense of the goodness and the pain in all of us. The stories are entertaining, for certain, and earthy, but they also subtly convey the sinister, stark reality of the human spirit underneath the surface, much like the undertow in a sparkling, inviting surf.

Haven’t we all once cried out I’m “going through Hell”? James Bennett examines that feeling more closely: If heaven and hell represent an intellect and body that have become polarized and destructively antagonistic, what does that suggest for healing? Come into this book and experience the images of the dark realm beneath consciousness: the wrathful deities, threatening serpents, cold long-barrows, loss of everything in death. The meanings of those myths may only come to us through intuition, so “Allow the stories, pictures and images to sit with you and speak to you, to spark your own connections and open doors for you in unexpected meaningful ways.” Let us see if we can translate the ancient legends of journeys through Hades into modern guidebooks for therapy; to stand in the space between the worlds, and see beyond suffering to renewal. Could that renewal be not only of self but of global cultures?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Having a deep love and fascination for the descent and ascent of Persephone ... By Maria Ede-Weaving Mythological journeys to the Underworld exist in many different cultures. Their recurrence suggests their importance and necessity with regard to human experience. Psychotherapist James Bennett explores this subject in his book Underworld & Archetypes.Having a deep love and fascination for the descent and ascent of Persephone in Greek Mythology, I was delighted to have the opportunity to review this book. I have long-held the belief that these stories of Underworld journeys, although on one level are metaphors for seasonal changes, also speak much about our own moments of crisis. I resonated wholeheartedly with the book’s message that despite the pain and struggle that accompany such dark and difficult psychological descents, there is a deep value in the process with much to be gained.James’ book is written in three sections. The first deals with Western Culture’s problematic fixation with transcendence; inherent in this obsession is the valuing of heaven above the earthly realms. This troubling polarisation has led to a perception of the material worlds of earth, underworld and body as inferior, flawed and even evil. James explores the psychological impetus that drives this split between spirit and matter, and illustrates how this unhealthy dissociation from the earthly realms severs us from our deepest sources of wisdom and growth. The second section examines the myths of descent and reveals how these can be useful tools in encouraging us to positively engage with our own times of loss, grief and change. The third section entitled ‘The Space Between’, discusses the importance of liminality in human experience; how change and transition are a constant factor in life. James reminds us that these liminal places are fertile with potential; thresholds where the known substance of our being – our understanding of the world and self – can dissolve and reform, triggering profound transformation and growth.James’ book will resonate with many on the Druid path. Druidry seeks to heal the split between spirit and matter, and the intimate connection Druidry fosters with the earth and its seasonal changes allows us to recognise that death and the descent are crucial to renewal and growth, whether it be in the natural world or within our own psyches.A psychotherapist of many years’ experience, it is clear that James understands deeply our reticence to trust in this challenging process – there is nothing romantic or fun about pain and suffering – however, this great little book is both a useful signpost and a source of reassurance, suggesting that we are well-equipped for the journey, that the descent is a core part of our humanity and an experience we will all share.Underworld and Archetypes is short in length but massive in wisdom. James Bennett writes with clarity and insight about a complex and intriguing subject. It is a perfect introduction to anyone unfamiliar with these fascinating myths and how they might serve to guide and enlighten our path. It is also an inspiring read for those veterans of the Underworld amongst us who know the myths and have the lived the journey but might need an encouraging reminder of its gifts. With a fascinating Bibliography and some lovely illustrations, Underworld and Archetypes is an enjoyable read I highly recommend.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A must have and a must read By Laurence Hillman This book is a gem and a rare view at what is most repressed in typical judeo-christian culture. Combining clear and nicely composed language with amazing imagery really brings the wisdom contained here into focus. If you want to explore the "other" side of a light-seeking culture, the Yin, the dark feminine, darkness as source, inner riches, grounding and depth, this book is for you.

By SnoMor I don't comment on Amazon, but after this book and what aloe has done for me I will start today. It's an interesting read! I'm finding it useful as it presents the process on how aloe vera is grown, manufactured and produced. It explains those terms you see on products you buy like difference between whole leaf, inner leaf and decolorized juice etc. as well as what I should look for as consumer. Like in the description, the images are nice and applicable, but the information is easy enough for me to read and understand why this plant is so useful for so many conditions.I like the tips options and already have tried a recipe (fresh orange juice + cranberry juice with a little piece of fresh aloe). For convenience, I am now used regular purchased organic juice instead of cutting a fresh piece. We all know that aloe is good for the skin and burns, but what I fould surprising is the results with my plantars fasciitis. The pain level has gone down quite a bit after a few days of drinking and I first noticed it when I get up in the morning. What a nice surprise!!! It lends to the credibility of assisting in inflammation and healing benefits discussed in the book. So much so, that my 10 year old german shepard who was hit by a car a few years ago and limping a bit, especially in the evening, I've given some his water and he seems better too.Overall, I rate this a 5 star as it's good introduction to aloe vera with useful and applicable information. I plan to leave the book on my coffee table for friends and family to grab and read and I will give testimony to what it has done more my feet pain! Thanks!

Excerpt from The Diagnosis and Modern Treatment of Pulmonary Consumption: With Special Reference to the Early Recognition and the Permanent Arrest of the DiseaseThe scope of this little book remains the same, and I have again refrained from exhaustive reference to the pathological anatomy of consumption. A number of additions have been made to various sections, and new sections have been inserted on such subjects as the value of the opsonic index in diagnosis and treatment, the use of Koch's new tuberculin in treatment, and Dr. Paterson's interesting observations on the value of manual labour at Frimley Sanatorium. I have to thank Dr. Charles Slater and Dr. Harold Spitta for much assistance in bacteriological questions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I have Huntington's disease, a wretched, neurodegenerative disease that is slowly diminishing my ability to think, speak and move. My book is a window into some of the ways HD has impacted my life and my family's lives. Even if you don't know anything about HD, I think you'll find this book to be compelling and thought-provoking. Why? Because at some time or another, you're going to lose someone you love. That person could just be taken from you all at once, or, as is becoming more common, the person you love will wake up and not be the same person he or she was the day before. This is my path and I write about how the simplest things in life can be the most heartbreaking, a life where comfort and love can be found during desperate times.

For those who have families, friends, or loved ones with this dreaded disease, this book will help you understand -perhaps- some of their thoughts and struggles. Walking thru Raindrops is one of my many favorites.Another reason I like her blogs is they are not long reads, and she will share the good days along with the bad ones.I am looking forward to Volume 2 and hope this gets into a hard copy for me to gift to others.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This book has been very helpful for me and a superb book about Vitamin B12! By Daisy S For me, this book has opened my eyes that I was not getting enough of the B Vitamins, and mostly Vitamin B12. Upon reading this book, I realized that I am going to be taking more Vitamin B tablets and eating the foods that have all of the Vitamin B in them. When I began to read this book, what I really like is that the author describes all of the Vitamin B family - Vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6, and B12.This book is centered upon Vitamin B12 and how to discover if you may have a deficiency and if so how to treat it with foods and Vitamin B12 supplements and what foods will naturally treat this.*Each of the B Vitamins are discussed and also what they do for the body's health overall. This is when I discovered how the B vitamins or lack of them can cause tingling of the hands and feet, numbness etc.Of course I will be going next week for my physical and mention this tingling to my doctor just to make sure that all is OK with my overall health. However, I am so inspired after reading this book that I took notes in a spiral notebook and plan to eat foods that contain more Vitamin B12 and also Vitamin B supplements. This book has encouraged me to take better care of my health and I have already found this book helpful!Highly recommend this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. B12 Deficiency By Amazon Customer Great information. A lot of people are Vit B 12 deficient and don't know it but it's so easily fixable. But, as with most issues, you gotta be aware there is a problem and then you can search for the underlying reason. Highly recommend this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. most of the basics By Angela C There is some newer missing information about b12 deficiencies that were not covered here. The basics are here for the most part. Some of the symptoms of deficiency were missed, but again, the bigger points were touched upon.It is a good book for an in depth look at the most commonly caused problems and symptoms. Food with natural b12 is covered.Ignore the information about how to inject yourself. A medicine vial is not spelled vile, and the fact this was missed let's me know the person writing was lacking in nursing skills. Betadine dripped on the top of the vial is not the recommended method for cleansing vial tops in the United States, please speak to you health care professional regarding injection methods. (If your health care professional suggests injections, they will also show you how to inject, and what part of the body to do it.)There are not many typos other than vile/vial, though I noted that one sentence said not to give your child supplemental iron with a doctor's advice. (Iron and b12 are two different things, and iron was not being discussed.)Unlike many thrown together books being sold as ebooks now, this one was actually well written and didn't feel cookie cutter fashioned. I am glad I took the time to read it.

He has never given her his name; he actually never speaks to a single person. She must determine who she can trust, who is innocent, and if Sebastian Marks—the man so many people fear—is actually everything her heart believes him to be.My Review: Lydia Brancroft loves her job as a librarian, and one of her favorite pass times is watching the patrons, especially Mr. Tall-Dark-and-Handsome. He never speaks more than a few words and has never told her his name, but yet he still interests her. One day while having lunch with her fiancé at the Hartman Hotel, she spots him in the corner watching her. She tries her best to remain cool while being under his stare and in the presence of fiancé, but soon she finds herself in a difficult situation. And the one to save her is none other than the mysterious patron, who she learns of which is named Sebastian Marks.Sebastian Marks is feared by many, and he appreciates that. Owning a notorious saloon and gambling club, he almost always finds trouble. And this time he finds it in one of his worst customers, Miss Lydia Brancroft’s fiancé. All Mr. Marks wishes is to be friends with Lydia, but soon his life becomes to much to hide. So when Lydia learns of Sebastian’s business, she wishes to see the establishment, even if it isn’t the best idea. While there something horrid accrues, leaving both Sebastian, Lydia, and their two friends under police investigation, for a murder. With so many things going wrong, who can you trust?Whispers in the Reading Room is book three in the Chicago World's Fair Mystery Series. This book was an awesome read. Once you pick it up you wont be able to put it down. I adore this author, so this book will definitely be added to my favorites.**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. but was happy to give it a try nonetheless By Debi @2014 & Beyond I'm not the type to steal credit when credit is due someone else, so let me tell you right now that the following review of this book, Whispers in the Reading Room is my mother's review:"While both my daughter and I have read several of Shelley Shepard Gray's Amish series books, we did not know she wrote other types of books as well. In fact, I was actually surprised to see this book, Whispers in the Reading Room, was written by the same author, but was happy to give it a try nonetheless. The setting for this historic book is in the seedier part of Chicago where the crime rate is high shortly after the Chicago World Fair in 1893. At once this story transported me to Chicago with its life in the back alleys and was part of the great division between the upper and middle class society.Whispers in the Reading Room is a story about middle class librarian, Lydia Bancroft, and the unlikely friendship she finds herself with a mysterious debonair gentleman patron of her library who never checks a book out. Lydia herself was lonely, and as she is weighted down by the duty to secure a wealthy husband so she can meet her mother's needs, she is very anxious. At once you realize that Mr. Sebastian Marks is an elusive man with many secrets. She learns his name when their paths cross the night Lydia's fiancé takes her to the Hartman Hotel and begins to rough handle her. Sebastian Marks intervenes in a tense situation in Lydia's life and from that moment on Lydia’s new friend takes on the role of protector while showing her that her fiancé isn’t who she thinks he is. Lydia discovers that Sebastian lives at the top of the prestigious hotel and that most everyone in Chicago is intrigued by him.Sebastian himself is quite the mystery man pretending to be a gentleman, and Lydia is shocked to learn that he is the owner of a drinking and gambling establishment. Lydia insists on visiting the club one night and both she and Sebastian are suddenly suspects to a murder. She must determine who can she really trust, who is innocent, and if Sebastian (who everyone fears) is actually everything she thinks he is.A mystery book is not the kind of book that I usually read, but once I started Whispers in the Reading Room I could not put it down. Whispers in the Reading Room was an excellent mystery/murder/romance for curling up reading on a raining day by the fireplace. Even though I hadn't read the first two books in this series, I fell in love with all the characters in this story and looking forward to a follow-up story. I will definitely have to go back and read the other Chicago World's Fair Mystery series books - Book #1, Secrets of Sloane House and Book #2, Deception on Sable Hill too!"I received a paperback copy of this book without cost from the publisher through The Fiction Guild, a Thomas Nelson/Zondervan book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own - well, they are my mother's and for that, I am responsible.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Detectives Sean Ryan and Owen Howard are back - and this time Lydia and Sebastian are high on the list of suspects By Michelle Green "I would never stop you from reading whatever you like. I like that you are smart, Lydia. That is one of the things I admire about you.""You are the first person who has told me anything of the sort."Another excellent installment in Shelley Gray's Chicago World's Fair Mysteries series, Whispers in the Reading Room delivers a fast-paced historical fiction/romance/mystery that succeeds on every level.Lydia works at the library because she's passionate about books, but it also has the side benefit of the meager pay check that helps her support her mother and maintain a facade of wealth enough to find herself a suitor. She's prepared to marry a man she doesn't love, a man who isn't quite the man he appears, just to give her mother the comfortable lifestyle they shared when her father was alive. She's resigned to her fate, but can't help but notice the handsome gentleman Sebastian Marks who frequents her library. Their shared love of reading, paired with a shared distaste for Lydia's fiance, Avondale, soon bring the two together in a way that neither was prepared for.But Sebastian Marks has his secrets, too. Lydia has to come to terms with the face that he's a notorious club owner - a club full of illegal gambling. Absolutely no place for a lady, still she insists on visiting in an attempt to better know Mr. Marks. When a gentleman is murdered on the steps of the club, the recent violence streak in the area suddenly gets the police's attention. From Deception on Sable Hill, detectives Sean Ryan and Owen Howard are back - and this time Lydia and Sebastian are high on the list of suspects.Lydia has an intense need to provide for her mother at any cost from the beginning, but as her character grows throughout the novel, she finally is making her own choices as an independent women. It's interesting to watch the women in this novel rebel against the standards of their time. They won't put up with a man trying to "own" them. Even Sebastian isn't everything a gentleman "should" be - he wants Lydia to experience the world, not shelter her.The mystery is a good one, though it's not really at the forefront until much later in the book, though there are clips of newspaper articles throughout that let the reader know trouble is brewing. When the resolution finally comes, it feels too quick, but the journey there is full of suspense and intrigue. Definitely worth reading this one, as well as the second book in the series, Deception on Sable Hill. Now I need to go back and read the first one, since I haven't had the chance yet!FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from Book Look for this review. The opinion in this review is unbiased and reflects my honest judgment of the product.

"Impossible to put down. Sparkling dialogue, references both musical and literary, and an offbeat cast of believable characters make the pages fly by."—Library Journal, starred review

"A fast-paced, intelligent tale of intrigue that will keep readers guessing until the refreshing end."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Maggie Fiori, San Francisco magazine editor and amateur sleuth, gets a package that leads her to investigate a family scandal going back to the Civil War. Why was her great-great-great grandmother imprisoned for bigamy and espionage? Was she a criminal or a hero? Did she support the Confederates or the Union? Maggie's husband, Michael, joins her on the trip to Oxford, Mississippi, to dig deep and solve the mystery.

Combining an engaging contemporary mystery with a carefully researched Civil War setting and nineteenth-century characters, The Spy on the Tennessee Walker will appeal to Civil War and American history buffs as well as fans of modern mysteries and historical fiction.

Linda Lee Peterson is the author of two previous Maggie Fiori mysteries, Edited to Death and The Devil's Interval. Young I can safely say that it's been a long time, if ever, that I've wished a book was longer, but it's true about The Spy on the Tennessee Walker. There's so much more I want to know about Victoria and Alma and Gabriel. Each of their stories could be a book on its own (maybe that's the plan . . .) It was a great read, and I especially loved the way the author created the diaries - beautifully written.

Two Great Stories By Moraga-Man Although she writes with a light touch, Linda Lee Peterson gives her readers plenty of food for thought in her latest novel, The Spy on the Tennessee Walker, the third story featuring amateur sleuth Maggie Fiori. This time around, Peterson blends Maggie’s attempt to solve a family mystery with a parallel story about one of her ancestors, who is more beautiful, intelligent, daring and yet more realistic than Scarlett O’Hara.Peterson finds a satisfying way to link the two stories by having Maggie visit relatives in Oxford, Mississippi, where the Oakland-base, magazine editor is a fish out of water amidst aunts, uncles and cousins whose traditional Southern lifestyle – more leisurely, conversational, tradition-loving and gentile—stand in contrast to Maggie’s high-velocity, high-tech, intellectual and edgy existence in the Bay Area, where she is a magazine editor. Most of the story is based in Oxford. Readers are treated to a loving portrait of the city and to mouth-watering accounts of home-made Southern cooking. We see a new side of Maggie as she interacts with her relatives and the author does a good job of conveying a sense of long-established, loving relationships, as well as a rich family history that stretches back over many generations. The story set around the Civil War and the ancestor who was a spy is the more dynamic of the two stories. Told mostly in the form of letters, Peterson manages to clearly convey the fact that “the past is a different place.” Victoria Cardworthy is just as smart, determined and insightful as Maggie Fiori, but she lives in a society where she is a second-class citizen. When the men in her life are caught up in the Civil War, she will not allow the social restrictions of her time to stop her from doing what she thinks is right. We can only wonder if Maggie, under similar circumstances, could be as bold and courageous.

Wonderful Dialogue By Amazon Customer I like many things about author Linda Lee Peterson’s writing but for me the cherry on the icing is her dialogue. She is one of those authors – like Elmore Leonard – who can write exchanges that are fun to read. When a scene ends, you imagine that the characters continued their conversation and wish you could linger and listen in.Peterson’s challenge in this novel is to write not just engaging exchanges between protagonist Maggie Fiori and her colorful colleagues at the San Francisco magazine she runs; and with her husband and children living the hectic lives of big-city families in the 21st century; but also with the Mississippi-based relatives she stays with throughout most of this novel. The rhythms and word choices of Maggie’s Deep South clan are presented with great charm and affection.Another challenge that Peterson surmounts is writing dialogue for the spy story set in the Civil War that is interwoven with Maggie’s activities in the present-day. People talked more formally in the 1860’s and it is hard to keep their exchanges fresh and lively, but Peterson finds a way. Her female spy and the men in her life share moments of humor, compassion and love in scenes that are as vibrant as those set in modern-day America. The author clearly did her homework before writing this book. Poet Walt Whitman gets more than a walk-on role in the story and readers learn a lot about several Civil War battles, how the wounded were treated, how observation balloons were used in the conflict, and how women used spycraft to try to give their side the upper hand.I like history, so this novel was a double-treat for me. I read it very quickly, and then shared it with my husband, who also enjoyed reconnecting with Maggie Fiori, her co-workers, extended family and formidable ancestor who was a spy and rode a Tennessee Walker.

The work of William James contributed greatly to the burgeoning fields of psychology, particularly in the areas of education, religion, mysticism and pragmatism. The brother of novelist Henry James and of diarist Alice James, William wrote several powerful essays expressing his ideas on the pragmatic theory of truth, sentience, and human beings’ right to believe. In “The Will to Believe”, James suggests that what a person holds to be true or attainable may exist through that person’s belief in them, regardless of a lack of physical evidence. In a sense, he advocates the theory of self-fulfilling prophesies. “Human Immortality” was a speech delivered during the annual Ingersoll Lectureship, given in memory of George Goldthwait Ingersoll, in 1897 at Harvard University. These works are a prime example of the powerful influence William James has had on modern psychology, and are still recognized today for their brilliance and revolutionary impacts on the field.

William James and the Right to Believe By Robin Friedman William James's "The Will to Believe and other Essays in Popular Philosophy" is a collection of nine essays written over a course of seventeen years -- from 1879 -- 1896 together with a Preface. The last of the essays is the controversial essay for which the collection is named, "The Will to Believe" which, James admitted, might better have been called "The Right to Believe." The essays originated as lectures which James delivered to philosophical or theological clubs at various universities. The book is dedicated to James's friend, the philosopher Charles Peirce, to whom James says he owes "more incitement and help than I can express or repay."The collection was published in 1897, after James's "Principles of Psychology" but before the "Varieties of Religious Experience", "Pragmatism", and a "Pluralistic Universe". I was struck by how many of James's lasting themes had been developed in this relatively early book -- including his pluralism and what he calls in the Preface to the book his radical empiricism. The book illustrates James's efforts to weave together insights from psychology, philosophy, and religion without great regard for narrow lines of professional specialization. The book also shows, in the wake of the "Principles of Psychology", James's increasing concern with religious questions. Early in 1896, James wrote to a friend that "I am more interested in religion than in anything else, but with a strange shyness of closing my hand on any definite symbols that might be too restrictive. So, I cannot call myself a Christian, and indeed go with my father in not being able to tolerate the notion of a selective personal relation between God's creatures and God himself as something ultimate." (Quoted in Robert Richardson's "William James in the Maelstrom of American Modernism" at 364-365)The book tries to make a place for and show the importance to life of a belief in transcendent reality. James is far from endorsing any specific creed. In the Preface, James points out that his lectures had been addressed to sophisticated college audiences whose members would be troubled by the possibility of religious faith in an age of science and skepticism. James pointed out that if he had been addressing a different kind of audience -- his example is adherents of the Salvation Army -- the focus of his remarks would have been different, as James would have felt himself required to critique a too easy and too full belief as opposed to a skepticism about the possiblity of any belief. The thrust of the essays is thus to defend a right to believe, and it is important to remember that James is directing his remarks to the perceived needs of his hearers. In making his argument, James discusses the nature and limitations of rationality and of what many people today term scientism -- the belief that only the physical sciences allow us to know what is true. The essays rely on James's psychology in showing the selective character of human awareness and perception. We see and focus upon reality in accordance with the questions we bring to it. James objects to the "monistic" view of reality which sees everything as part of a single interconnected fact or "block". He argues for pluralism and for attention to specific facts and detailed. Reality is not, for James, either an absolute block or a mere sand-heap of unconnected particulars. Rather, it exhibits loose interconnections and a spirit of, in words he would use again in his final essay of 1916, "ever not quite". Arguing against a mechanically deterministic universe, James argues for the possibility of chance using specific and homely examples. It is possible, James argues, that I could walk home down one street rather than another. It is possible, he claims, that a man who had brutally murdered his wife might have done something else, and that some other result would have been morally better than the killing. In understanding reality, James argues, we need to look forward rather than back, and use the energy and activity that may make our lives purposeful. If a person is caught on a cliff and needs to jump to safety, he will be more likely to do so if he believes he is able to do so. If he approaches the moment with trepidation, doubt and fear, fail he will. Thus, based upon a variety of considerations, James argues in these essays that it is rational for to adopt a believing attitude towards a transcendent source in reality and to take the ethical and metaphysical risks attendant upon such a belief. James does not always help himself in his choice of language, and his teaching has been subject to misunderstanding and ridicule. It is a difficult, challenging teaching which takes time to unpack and consider. The first four essays in the collection, including "The Will to Believe" are the most directly concerned with questions of religious belief and the nature of human rationality. In "The Dilemma of Determinism", James gives his fullest consideration to the question of determinism and chance."The Moral Philosopher and the Moral Life" is perhaps James's most sustained treatment of ethical questions, and he ties the question of different types of moral attitudes to questions of one's religious attitude. The two essays "Great Men and their Environment" and "The Importance of Individuals" argue, for the importance of individual effort and individual leaders in creating and changing human society. These essays still have much to teach in countering various forms of historical determinism. The collection closes with an early essay critical of Hegelian absolutism and an essay showing James's interest in and sympathy for psychical research. A persistent theme of James is that there is more than one way to understand reality. This book is a pivotal work of James in that it ties together his work in psychology with his ongoing interests in religion and philosophy. The beauty of James's prose should not blind the reader to the complexity of James's thought. This is an excellent work with which to begin a reading of William James.Robin Friedman
